Short answer: M18 batteries do not work in M12 tools, and M12 batteries do not work in M18 tools. They are separate Milwaukee battery systems. Runtime is not a simple M18-versus-M12 contest: it depends on the exact battery, tool, and workload.
Are M18 and M12 batteries interchangeable?
No. Milwaukee identifies M12 tools with M12 REDLITHIUM batteries and M18 tools with M18 REDLITHIUM batteries, and says the packs are not interchangeable across the systems. Its straightforward compatibility check is to match the battery label to the tool label. See Milwaukee’s battery-selection guide, which names M12 as 12 volts and M18 as 18 volts.

Before buying a pack, check the exact tool’s manual or product listing for its battery requirements. A battery’s capacity or apparent fit is not a substitute for the system match.

Can one charger charge both M12 and M18 batteries?
Some Milwaukee chargers support both battery systems, but that does not make their packs interchangeable in tools. For example, Milwaukee’s Four Bay Super Charger has two bays for M18 batteries only and two hybrid bays for M18 or M12 batteries. Check the exact charger model and its bay layout rather than assuming every bay accepts either type.

Milwaukee’s charger catalog also lists dual-system models; that catalog page dates from 2021, so verify the current listing and compatibility for any specific charger before purchase.
Does M18 last longer than M12?
Not automatically. Runtime varies with the particular battery pack, compatible tool, and work being done. Milwaukee’s official material does not provide a controlled M12-versus-M18 runtime comparison, so the platform names alone do not establish which will last longer.

- REDLINK Intelligence: provides optimized performance and overload protection using total system communication between tool, battery and charger
For a useful comparison, start with the exact tool model and task. Then compare compatible batteries by their amp-hour rating and any runtime claims Milwaukee gives for that tool. Do not treat voltage as a runtime measurement or apply a claim about one battery-and-tool pairing to an entire platform.
What are M18 CP, XC, and HD batteries for?
Milwaukee’s M18 battery guide describes these families in terms of their intended trade-offs. These are manufacturer categories, not promises of a fixed runtime across tools:
Rank #3
- REDLINK Intelligence: Provides optimized performance and overload protection using total system communication between tool, battery and charger
- Offers long-lasting performance and durability
- Fuel gauge onboard: Displays remaining runtime for less downtime on the job
- All-weather performance: Delivers fade free power in extreme jobsite conditions
- Add any M18 Tool-Only Option to Build Your Own Kit
- CP: smaller and lighter, when reducing pack size and weight matters.
- XC: aimed at providing more power and runtime.
- HD: intended for high-demand applications.
Choose among them only after confirming compatibility with your tool, then check the specific pack’s specifications. For quantified size, weight, capacity, or runtime comparisons, use the exact product listings rather than assuming all packs in a family perform identically.

In an announcement dated August 13, 2026, Milwaukee said its new HIGH OUTPUT XC5 batteries continue to deliver 5 amp hours of runtime and provide 50% more power than the prior REDLITHIUM XC5.0. Milwaukee describes the new packs as compatible with the full M18 system. These are Milwaukee’s claims about a within-M18 comparison, not an independent test or evidence that M18 universally outlasts M12. See the announcement.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Product will either come in original packaging that is in less than perfect shape and has been opened to inspect contents or will come in non-retail packaging (brown/white box or white/clear bag). Charges pack up to 40% faster, reducing downtime and maximizing productivity.
- The charger accepts all M18 and M12 batteries, providing an upgrade for both systems.
- The charger indicates when the battery reaches an 80% charge.
- Single unit simplicity for quick charge of all M12 and M18 battery packs.
- Sequential charging: automatically charges the second inserted pack once the first pack is fully charged.
Rank #4
- Universal Compatibility: Compatible with all Milwaukee M12 lithium-ion tools and chargers (sold separately)
- Fuel Gauge Indicator: Fuel gauge on tool indicates when to recharge
- Low Self-Discharge Technology: Battery resists drainage when not in use
- Stable Base Design: Flat-bottom base allows tools to stand upright
- Extended Capacity Performance: Delivers 4.0 Ah (48-Watt hour) of run time for longer operation between charges
How to choose a battery for your tool
- Read the tool label. Identify whether it belongs to the M12 or M18 system.
- Match the system. Select a battery carrying the same M12 or M18 label; consult the tool’s manual or product listing if unsure.
- Fit the pack to the job. For M18, use Milwaukee’s CP, XC, and HD descriptions as category-level guidance, then check the exact pack specifications for your tool and workload.
- Check the charger separately. Confirm that the specific charger model supports the pack and, for multi-bay models, which bays accept it.
