Start by restarting the tablet, installing any available Android and app updates, and checking how much internal storage is free. Google says Android devices can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free, though freeing space is not a guaranteed speed fix. If the slowdown continues, use Safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is responsible before considering a factory reset.
Work through the low-risk fixes first
After each step, restart the tablet and check whether the problem has changed. Settings labels and paths vary by manufacturer and Android version; if a menu is missing, consult the tablet maker’s support instructions. Google’s general troubleshooting guide is at Speed up a slow Android device.

1. Restart and identify what feels slow
Restart the tablet, then try the task that was lagging. Notice whether the whole device is sluggish—such as opening menus or switching apps—or whether only internet-dependent tasks are slow. If the problem is limited to browsing, streaming or downloads, check the network connection and connection settings rather than assuming the tablet itself is the cause.
2. Install available system and app updates
To check for an Android update, look in Settings for System and Software update. Depending on the tablet, the update option may be under About tablet or another menu. Install an update if one is offered, but do not assume an older model will have a newer Android version available.

For apps, open the Google Play Store, tap the profile icon, select Manage apps & devices, and review available updates. Menu wording may vary slightly.
3. Check internal storage and make room if needed
Look at the tablet’s storage in Settings. Google’s Android Help says a device can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free; treat that as a general troubleshooting benchmark, not a promise that clearing space will make every tablet faster. See Google’s slow-device guidance.

If free space is low, review large downloads, offline videos or music, and apps you no longer use. Remove only files and apps you recognize and are comfortable losing. Check the original slowdown again after making space.
4. Check whether a downloaded app is causing the lag
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. The method for entering Safe mode differs among tablet makers, so use the manufacturer’s instructions if you cannot find the option. If the tablet runs more smoothly in Safe mode, Google says a downloaded app is a likely cause—not proof that one specific app is responsible.

Restart normally, then remove recently downloaded apps one at a time. Restart and test after each removal so you can identify whether that change helped. You can reinstall an app later if it was not the cause.
Understand the trade-offs before changing settings
Battery Saver may make some tasks feel slower
Battery Saver can extend a charge, but it may limit or stop background activity. That can delay app updates, notifications, network connections, features or visual effects. It is a battery-life setting, not a universal performance booster. Google also notes that a hot device’s battery drains faster; avoid leaving the tablet in hot conditions or continuing demanding use if it is overheating. See Google’s battery and device guidance.

An SD card is for supported tablets and storage—not processor speed
If the tablet supports a microSD card and internal storage is the issue, a card may let you move photos, videos and other files off the device. It does not add processor speed or RAM, and any responsiveness improvement is limited to cases where low internal storage is contributing to the problem.

Check the exact tablet’s specifications and help page for SD-card support and available modes. Formatting a card permanently deletes its data, so back it up first.

If the general steps do not help, contact the tablet manufacturer for model-specific advice. A factory reset is a last-resort troubleshooting step, not a routine speed setting: it removes device data and installed apps, along with their associated data. Back up anything you want to keep before resetting, and make sure you know how to restore your files and sign back in.
Affordable tablets vary in model, Android version, memory and storage, so there is no single performance setting that applies to all of them. Android Developers notes that memory-constrained devices are more prone to app startup latency, app-not-responding errors and crashes; that describes a hardware limitation, not something a generic tweak can reliably overcome.
