M12 is a separate platform: an M18 battery is not the battery for an M12 tool. Within M18, choose a pack family for its size, weight, power and runtime—not because CP, XC and HD indicate different tool-fit standards.
Which batteries work with Milwaukee tools?
For an M18 tool, use an M18 battery. Milwaukee’s M18 system FAQ states: “All M18™ Batteries are compatible with M18™ tools & chargers.” That is the manufacturer’s system-level compatibility rule; it does not provide a tool-by-tool list of every legacy or specialist model.

M12 batteries belong to the M12 platform and work with M12 tools and chargers, according to Milwaukee. Do not treat M12 and M18 as interchangeable battery sizes. If you have an unusual older tool or need confirmation for a specific model, check its manual or ask Milwaukee support.

What do CP, XC and HD mean?
CP, XC and HD describe Milwaukee battery pack families and their size-and-use trade-offs, not separate compatibility standards. Milwaukee describes all three as fitting M18 tools.
#1 Best Overall
- REDLINK Intelligence: provides optimized performance and overload protection using total system communication between tool, battery and charger
| Family | Milwaukee’s description | Practical selection |
|---|---|---|
| CP | Compact and lightest | Choose when a smaller, lighter pack matters more than maximizing runtime for demanding or long-duration work. |
| XC | Balances size and weight, power, and runtime | A middle ground when you want a balance rather than the smallest pack or the largest high-demand option. |
| HD | Larger; intended for high power and longer runtime in high-demand use | Consider for demanding work or longer runs where the added size is acceptable. |
These are broad product-family descriptions, not a guarantee that every pack behaves identically in every tool. Runtime depends on the tool and how it is used; an amp-hour rating by itself does not establish an exact run time.
Does a more powerful or newer M18 battery fit older M18 tools?
Milwaukee says its battery electronics allow M18 batteries to be compatible with M18 tools, including in its FORGE XC6.0 FAQ. The company also describes the FORGE XC6.0 as compatible with 300+ M18 tools on that product page, accessed October 4, 2026. These are manufacturer statements, not an independent model-by-model audit; consult the tool manual if you need a definitive answer for a particular legacy or specialist tool.

- Best-in-class construction: Resistant housing designed to provide increased protection against exposure to common oils, greases, and solvents
- All-weather performance: delivers fade free power in extreme jobsite conditions
- Fuel gauge onboard: Displays remaining runtime
- REDLINK Intelligence: Our battery circuitry provides optimized performance and overload protection using total system communication between tool, battery, and charger
- Versatility: Powers more than 200+ Milwaukee M18 cordless power tools
Compatibility does not make different packs equivalent in hand or on the job. Milwaukee says the FORGE XC6.0 delivers HD12.0 power in a smaller, lighter design, but not the HD12.0’s same runtime. Its HIGH OUTPUT CP3.0 listing claims 50% more power and runs 50% cooler than standard M18 REDLITHIUM CP packs. Those percentages are Milwaukee’s product claims, not independent test findings.
Which M18 battery should you choose?
- Prioritize low weight and compact size: start with CP.
- Want a balance: consider XC.
- Expect high-demand, longer-duration work: consider HD, accepting a larger pack.
Compare the exact battery’s size, stated capacity and product description with your tool and work pattern. Do not infer a guaranteed runtime from Ah alone: tool load and working conditions vary, and Milwaukee’s family guidance does not establish a universal runtime formula.

Can you charge an M18 battery with any charger?
Milwaukee says authentic M18 batteries should be charged with Milwaukee M18 chargers and advises against third-party batteries or chargers. Confirm a charger’s supported platform and battery combinations before use. Some Milwaukee chargers support both M18 and M12; the M18/M12 Four Bay Simultaneous Super Charger, model 48-59-1818, is one stated example that supports both systems and simultaneous charging of four packs.
Fast charging depends on the pack and charger
Milwaukee reports that the FORGE XC6.0 reaches 80% in 15 minutes when paired with the M18 Dual Bay Simultaneous Super Charger. Its system FAQ also reports a 25-minute full charge and 15 minutes to 80% for that pack using the M18 Super Charger in room-temperature testing; Milwaukee says actual results may vary. The exact charger matters, so do not apply those figures to other batteries or charger combinations.

What to check before buying a replacement
- Read the tool label or manual: confirm it is an M18 tool, especially if it is an older or specialist model.
- Choose the pack family for the job: weigh compactness against the power and runtime needs of your work.
- Match the charger: use a Milwaukee M18 charger for an authentic M18 battery, and check whether a multi-platform charger supports the pack you have.
- Verify the exact product and seller: check the model number and authenticity. Milwaukee’s older XC 3.0 product page identifies that model as no longer available, so do not assume it is a current offering.
