Zapier and Make suit managed visual automation; Pipedream is geared toward developer-led API work. Temporal and Apache Airflow are code-first tools for different kinds of orchestration, not direct visual-builder substitutes. Compare candidates using a workflow you actually need to run, not just an integrations count.
Start with why you want to replace n8n
n8n describes itself as a tool for connecting apps through APIs and manipulating data with little or no code. Its documented options include npm, Docker, and hosted cloud, so deciding whether you want to keep control of deployment or hand hosting to a provider is a useful first step. See the n8n documentation.

- You want less infrastructure to manage: Compare cloud-hosted services such as Zapier, Make, and Pipedream.
- You want a visual builder with little coding: Look first at Zapier or Make, then check whether each has the connectors and workflow logic you need.
- Your workflows are API-heavy and code is acceptable: Pipedream may be a better fit to evaluate.
- You need durable execution or scheduled data pipelines: Consider Temporal or Apache Airflow, while recognizing that both require a more code-centric approach.
- Your priority is Microsoft administration or enterprise governance: Evaluate Power Automate or Workato against your organization’s licensing and controls.
These products address different jobs. A tool that is strong for a scheduled data pipeline may be a poor fit for a simple event that updates a business app.
How the main alternatives differ
The table summarizes the roles attributed to these products in the n8n Blog comparison. Its descriptions and integration counts are not an independently tested cross-vendor benchmark, and pricing or product limits may change.
#1 Best Overall
| Tool | Best fit to evaluate | Deployment or workflow style | Billing description in the comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zapier | Teams seeking straightforward, low-volume app automations and a broad connector catalog | Cloud-only; visual automation | Task-based |
| Make | Teams wanting a managed visual builder | Cloud-only; visual automation | Credits or operations |
| Pipedream | Developer-led, API-heavy workflows where custom code is acceptable | Serverless cloud; code and API integrations | Credits, with invocation and compute factors |
| Temporal | Teams building code-defined workflows that need durable execution and retries | Code-first engine with SDKs | Not stated in the comparison |
| Apache Airflow | Scheduled data pipelines | DAGs, Python operators; self-hosted or managed deployment | Not stated in the comparison |
| Power Automate | Organizations centered on Microsoft integrations and administration | Cloud offering with an on-premises data gateway | User- or flow-based |
| Workato | Centrally governed enterprise integrations | Cloud enterprise iPaaS | Usage-based; current quote levels are not established here |
| ZenML | Machine-learning pipeline orchestration | ML pipeline platform | Not stated in the comparison |
Which alternatives are worth shortlisting?
Zapier: prioritize adoption and app breadth
Zapier is a reasonable candidate when nontechnical teammates need to build relatively simple app automations in a managed cloud service. The comparison characterizes its pricing as task-based and reports a vendor-published figure of “9,000+” integrations. Catalog figures can change and are not independently audited; confirm that the specific apps, triggers, and actions you need are available. Also calculate how the tasks your workflow consumes map to your expected volume. The comparison’s warning that complex or high-volume work can be challenging is the publisher’s assessment, not an independent test.
Make: prioritize managed visual flows
Make is worth testing when a visual automation environment is the main requirement. The comparison describes it as cloud-only, with credits or operations billing, and reports “3,000+” integrations as a vendor-published figure. Before estimating cost, check the current definition of an operation, the applicable plan limits, and how your workflow’s branches and repeated actions are counted.

Pipedream: prioritize developer-led API work
Pipedream may suit teams that are comfortable writing code as part of an API workflow. The comparison describes a serverless cloud platform with custom code and API integrations, and a credit model affected by invocations and compute. It reports “3,000+” integrations as a vendor-published figure. Confirm the current credit rules and runtime limits with Pipedream before estimating cost or committing a production workflow.

Temporal: prioritize durable, code-defined execution
Temporal is not a like-for-like visual app integration builder. It is a code-first durable execution engine with SDKs, aimed at teams defining workflows in code and focusing on execution that can recover through retries. Consider it when the problem is building reliable application workflows, not simply connecting a long list of off-the-shelf apps.
Rank #3
Apache Airflow: prioritize scheduled data pipelines
Airflow is a better match for scheduled DAG-based data pipelines than for general event-to-app automation. The comparison points to retries, Python operators, and self-hosted or managed deployment. Choose it when the workflow shape is a data pipeline maintained by a technical team, rather than expecting a point-and-click replacement for n8n.
Power Automate and Workato: prioritize organizational fit
Power Automate is a candidate when Microsoft ecosystem integration and administration are central. Its described options include cloud service, an on-premises data gateway, and user- or flow-based pricing. Confirm how licensing applies to the actual tenant and workflow; a general pricing label is not enough to establish your cost.
Rank #4
Workato is positioned as a cloud enterprise iPaaS with usage-based pricing and enterprise app integrations. It may merit evaluation for centrally governed integrations, but the comparison does not establish current quote levels or a price comparison.
ZenML: only for ML pipeline orchestration
ZenML belongs on the list only if the automation problem is specifically machine-learning pipeline orchestration. Its category does not make it a general API workflow replacement.

Self-hosting leads that need further verification
A secondary 2026 alternatives list names Activepieces, Windmill, Node-RED, and Kestra as self-hosting alternatives. That listing alone does not establish their current deployment methods, licenses, features, or pricing. Treat them as candidates to investigate rather than verified recommendations.

Run the same representative workflow through each finalist’s design process or trial environment. Include the parts that make your actual automation difficult, not only its happy path.
- Check deployment and control. Decide whether you need a hosted service or self-managed deployment, and identify who owns operations and data location decisions.
- Map the workflow style. Determine whether the people maintaining it need a visual builder, low-code API steps, or code-first orchestration.
- Verify integration paths. Confirm native connector coverage for the required triggers and actions. If a connector is missing, check custom HTTP/API support, authentication handling, and data transformations.
- Exercise reliability and visibility. Test branching, retries, error handling, run history, and the operational visibility your workload requires.
- Model the actual billable unit. Estimate expected volume and find out what counts as a task, operation, execution, credit, user, or compute time. The labels differ, so headline plan prices alone do not make a meaningful comparison.
- Check governance and ownership. Review permissions, lifecycle controls, administration, and who will maintain workflows after launch.
The comparison discusses deployment, integrations, extensibility, observability, execution reliability, and pricing, but it does not provide an independently verified benchmark across vendors. Use it to narrow the field, then validate requirements and current limits with the vendor.
Quick Recap
How to make the final choice
- Choose Zapier when easy adoption and a wide app catalog matter more than a code-centric workflow.
- Choose Make when you want managed, visual automation and can verify its operation-based billing against your design.
- Choose Pipedream when developers will own API workflows and custom code is a feature, not a drawback.
- Choose Temporal for code-defined durable execution, or Airflow for scheduled data pipelines; neither should be judged as a one-click visual-builder substitute.
- Choose Power Automate or Workato only after confirming that their administration, integration, and licensing model fits your organization.
