What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Neither MikroTik RouterOS nor OpenWrt is automatically the safer or easier choice for every router owner. The better fit depends on whether your exact hardware is supported, how reliably you can install security updates, and whether the platform’s management tools match the work you need to do. MikroTik documents specific RouterOS security controls and several ways to administer it; OpenWrt’s security guidance makes supported-versus-end-of-life status central. The available documentation does not establish a head-to-head security or ease-of-use winner.
How to compare the platforms
Judge the system you can actually maintain on your device, not just the feature list. Check four things: security configuration, the update and support model, the tools you will use for routine administration, and exact hardware compatibility.

Which platform is more secure?
The documentation does not justify a blanket verdict that one operating system is inherently more secure. A router’s practical security depends on whether it receives fixes, whether it remains on a supported release, and how its administrator configures access.
RouterOS: secure the management plane
MikroTik recommends upgrading RouterOS because later releases have fixed weaknesses and vulnerabilities found in older versions. Its manual also warns that “Network devices with management interfaces open to the internet are constantly scanned and targeted by automated attacks.” Read the full RouterOS security guidance when hardening a device.
#1 Best Overall
- MikroTik RouterBOARD C52iG-5HaxD2HaxD-TC-US (US Version) hAP ax (WiFi6) Quad-Core IPQ-6010 864 MHz, RAM 1GB, RouterOS, License level 4 It's time to supercharge your home network with the Generation
- hAP ax has everything you might need in a primary home access point - and more
- Forget endless reviews and comparisons - this is the perfect device for 99% of homes
- Wireless signal is now stronger than ever
- Here are the two main ingredients of hAP ax's success: a state-of-the-art dual-band, dual-chain 4-4
- Change the default username, use strong credentials, and create individual administrator accounts with only the privileges each person needs.
- Use SSH keys where appropriate.
- Keep management services off the public internet. MikroTik says the preconfigured firewall blocks WAN-side management access by default, but administrators should verify their own rules and avoid exposing WinBox, SSH, or other management services directly. Use a VPN for remote administration.
- Disable services you do not use, including MAC-Telnet, MAC-WinBox, MAC-Ping, bandwidth server, proxy, SOCKS, and UPnP; close unused management ports.
OpenWrt: stay on a supported release
OpenWrt’s security policy describes a clear support boundary: supported releases receive core security and other fixes the project is aware of, while end-of-life releases no longer receive updates, including for severe issues. The policy recommends moving to the latest stable version. Check the project’s security policy for the current status rather than assuming an old installation is still maintained.
How updates and support differ
RouterOS release channels
MikroTik documents four RouterOS channels: Long term, Stable, Testing, and Development. The names describe choices among release tracks, not a guaranteed update cadence. Choose a channel in light of your tolerance for newer changes, confirm that your device is suitable for the update, and follow the vendor’s upgrade instructions. MikroTik documents both managed and manual upgrade workflows, as well as recovery procedures.

OpenWrt release status and upgrades
For OpenWrt, establish first whether your installed release is supported; end-of-life software does not receive project updates. Upgrade instructions can vary by device, so use the documentation for the exact model rather than treating a generic procedure as universal. The Sysupgrade Server listing states that after OpenWrt 25.12 the project transitioned from opkg to apk and that fresh installs include luci-app-attendedsysupgrade by default. Those details are version-sensitive; check current release and device documentation before following an upgrade path.
Which is easier to manage?
“Easier” depends on the tasks you do and the interface you prefer. MikroTik documents a broad tool set, but that breadth alone does not show that RouterOS is easy for beginners. The sources available here do not establish that OpenWrt is simpler or harder, either. Compare the actual workflows you expect to use:
Rank #3
- Initial setup: Can you complete the network, Wi-Fi, and access setup using the interface and instructions you understand?
- Routine changes: How comfortable are you changing firewall rules, wireless settings, and administrative access?
- Automation: Do you need scripting, an API, or command-line control, or do you mainly want a graphical workflow?
- Backup and recovery: Can you make a usable backup and follow the right recovery process if an update or configuration change goes wrong?
For RouterOS, MikroTik lists WinBox (a standalone Windows configuration tool), WebFig, Android and iOS configuration tools, a CLI with scripting, and an API for custom configuration and monitoring applications. The manual also describes binary backup/restore and human-readable configuration export/import. Review the software specifications and test the workflow you intend to use before relying on it for a critical network.

Not by assumption. OpenWrt’s MikroTik RouterBoard instructions include model- and firmware-specific notes. Check the current device entry for the exact model and hardware revision before buying a router for OpenWrt or attempting an installation. General compatibility with MikroTik hardware does not mean every MikroTik device is supported by OpenWrt. Start with the OpenWrt MikroTik RouterBoard guidance.
Quick Recap

- The hAP ac² RBD52G-5HacD2HnD-TC is a Dual-concurrent Access Point, that provides Wifi coverage for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies at the same time.
- Five 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports provide Gigabit connections for your wired devices, USB can be used for external storage or 4G/LTE modem, and device supports IPsec hardware acceleration.
- New design universal case allows unit to be positioned either horizontally (desktop) or vertically (tower case).
- CPU core count: 4, Size of RAM: 128MB, PoE in: Passive PoE, PoE input voltage: 18 - 28V
Which should you choose?
- Choose RouterOS when you have compatible MikroTik hardware and its documented management options suit your experience and administration needs. Be prepared to select and apply updates and to secure the management plane.
- Choose OpenWrt when your exact device is supported and you are willing to track the project’s release-support status and device-specific upgrade instructions.
- Pause before switching if you have not confirmed the hardware revision, installation method, backup, and recovery path. A platform comparison cannot compensate for an unsupported device or an update process you cannot complete safely.
