There is no evidence-based overall winner among Midjourney, ChatGPT Images, and Adobe Firefly. The best fit depends on your workflow, privacy needs, editing habits, and how you plan to use the results. One naming update matters: OpenAI has retired its DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT; the current ChatGPT image experience is called ChatGPT Images.
What “DALL·E” means in this comparison now
OpenAI’s current ChatGPT image feature is ChatGPT Images, which supports creating images and editing uploaded images. OpenAI says its official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT has been retired. So if you are choosing a tool today, compare ChatGPT Images with Midjourney and Adobe Firefly—not a current ChatGPT feature called DALL·E. OpenAI’s Help Center describes ChatGPT Images as available on all tiers; it lists “Images with thinking” for Plus, Pro, and Business, with Enterprise and Edu availability described as upcoming in the page updated in September 2026. Midjourney’s Help Center identifies V8.2 as live and available through its website and Discord. Its version guide documents feature differences across releases, so the model version matters when comparing results or following a tutorial. The guide says V8.1 supports HD images up to 2048 pixels without upscaling, with higher GPU-time cost than SD generation; it also notes that some editing operations can reduce HD results to SD. Those V8.1 details should not be assumed to describe V8.2. See the version guide and verify the current model before starting a project.

Privacy is a separate consideration from image quality. Midjourney’s current plan comparison limits Stealth Mode to Pro and Mega. Its Terms of Service, effective May 27, 2026, say content is publicly viewable and remixable by default in public settings. Stealth is described as a best-efforts non-publication setting, and assets created in shared or open spaces remain visible to people in those spaces. Read the plan comparison and Terms of Service before submitting confidential prompts or references.
Midjourney’s terms also say that a company, or an employee of a company, with more than $1 million in annual revenue must subscribe to Pro or Mega to own assets under Midjourney’s stated terms. This is vendor policy, subject to applicable law and changes to the terms—not a general statement about copyright ownership.

ChatGPT Images: a conversational creation and editing option
ChatGPT Images is the current image workflow in ChatGPT for creating and editing images. That may suit people who want to describe changes conversationally rather than work only through a dedicated image-generation interface. Availability and tier details can change, so check OpenAI’s Help Center page rather than relying on older DALL·E instructions.
Adobe Firefly: consider the surrounding Adobe workflow
Adobe’s plan information describes image-generation features, monthly generative credits, and access to Adobe applications on eligible plans. That makes Firefly a plausible fit if you already create or edit work in Adobe’s ecosystem. The exact features, credits, and prices depend on the live offer and region; check Adobe’s current Firefly plans for the terms that apply to you.

Commercial use is not the same as a universal rights guarantee
Adobe says outputs from its Firefly models may be used commercially and describes its Firefly training data as licensed content and public-domain material where copyright has expired. Adobe also says it does not train Firefly models on subscribers’ personal content and attaches Content Credentials to outputs as a transparency measure. The plan page separately advises users to evaluate whether output from partner generative models is appropriate for their project. A Content Credential is not a resolution of copyright or other legal questions. Review Adobe’s plan information and Firefly information for the applicable terms and model distinctions.
Midjourney sets its own terms for assets and commercial use, including the stated Pro or Mega requirement for companies above its revenue threshold. For either service, read the current vendor terms and identify which model and plan apply to the specific work. Neither vendor’s language should be treated as a universal guarantee of ownership, non-infringement, or legal suitability.

- Start with the task. Decide whether your priority is conversational creation and editing, a dedicated generation environment, or an Adobe-centered workflow.
- Check privacy before uploading. Review the service’s current visibility defaults, plan controls, and terms; do not assume that a paid plan makes every shared space private.
- Confirm model and plan details. Record the model version, region, and subscription tier you would use. For Midjourney, the documented version differences make this especially important.
- Verify usage terms for the actual output. For Firefly, distinguish Adobe Firefly models from partner models. For Midjourney, check the current commercial and ownership terms relevant to your organization.
- Test your own prompts if image quality is decisive. Use the same prompts, target formats, and editing tasks in each service, then compare the outputs against your requirements.
