To use a MIDI keyboard in MuseScore Studio, connect and power it on, open a score, select a starting position, enter note input mode, choose a note duration, then press keys on the controller. If MuseScore does not respond, check the selected MIDI input device under Preferences → Audio & MIDI and make sure note input is active.
Set up the keyboard and enter notes
-
Connect the keyboard to your computer and turn it on. Starting MuseScore Studio after the keyboard is powered on is a sensible first check for detection, though it is not established as a requirement on every current setup.

For consecutive notes, release each key fully before pressing the next. To enter a chord, press its notes together. Notes outside the key signature receive accidentals automatically, but you may need to adjust their enharmonic spelling.
If you have multiple MIDI devices, open Preferences → Audio & MIDI and select the keyboard as the MIDI input device. The same preferences area includes MIDI mappings and note-input behavior; see the MuseScore Studio preferences handbook.

As a quick diagnostic, open the built-in piano keyboard with View → Piano keyboard or press P, then use it to select pitches. If that enters notes but the external keyboard does not, focus troubleshooting on the MIDI device selection or connection.

In Preferences → Audio & MIDI, check that the intended keyboard is selected as the MIDI input. A keyboard producing sound does not by itself show that MuseScore is receiving its MIDI input.

Check that a score position is selected, note input mode is active, and a duration is chosen. Pressing keys without those score-entry steps will not follow the documented note-entry workflow.
The keyboard does not appear in the input list
First check whether your operating system recognizes the keyboard or its MIDI interface. Reconnect it or power-cycle the keyboard, then reopen MuseScore Studio. An older MuseScore handbook recommends starting the application after powering on the keyboard, but that legacy guidance is a check to try, not a guaranteed fix for every current system.

The keyboard is listed but no notation appears
Return to the score and verify the selected position, note input mode, and duration. These determine where and how incoming pitches are entered. MuseScore Studio’s current handbook also notes that notes can be replaced at the selected position depending on the mode and score context, so save before experimenting with an unfamiliar entry method.
Only one note appears instead of a chord
Press the chord’s MIDI keys at the same time. Keys pressed one after another, with each released before the next, are interpreted as consecutive notes.

Your keyboard has round MIDI ports
A keyboard with traditional MIDI ports may need a MIDI-to-USB interface or adapter if your computer has no matching MIDI input. Whether you need one depends on the ports on both devices; it is not necessary for every MIDI keyboard setup. A MuseScore community discussion provides an example of this kind of connection, not an official compatibility recommendation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose between step-time and real-time entry
Ordinary note input is the simplest place to start: select a score position and duration, then enter pitches one at a time or as chords. MuseScore Studio also documents real-time modes for performing into a MIDI keyboard while notation is added. See the handbook’s note-input modes page for details.
| Method | How it works | What MuseScore must interpret | Constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary note input | Select a position and duration, then enter notes or chords. | The selected pitches and score-entry state. | Notes may replace existing notes at the selected position, depending on mode and score context. |
| Real-time input | Perform along with a metronome while MuseScore adds notation. | The performed rhythm and timing. | Preselect the shortest duration you intend to use. Tuplets are not supported, and entry operates on one staff and one voice. |
Because real-time entry has to interpret timing, it is less direct than entering pitches with a chosen duration. Use it when performing the passage is more convenient than entering its notes individually, and be prepared for the documented limits on tuplets, staff, and voice.
