Microsoft’s rumored Surface Laptop Ultra may come in two Nvidia RTX Spark configurations, with a reported memory ceiling of 128GB on the higher-end version. But as of October 7, 2026, those details were still pre-event reporting—not final specifications confirmed by Microsoft—and the cited coverage offers no independent performance tests against Apple’s MacBook Pro.
What is the Surface Laptop Ultra?
It is the name attached to a reported high-end Microsoft laptop expected to feature Nvidia RTX Spark. Gizmodo’s October 6, 2026, article framed it as a MacBook Pro rival, drawing on reporting by Windows Central senior editor Zac Bowden. Microsoft had confirmed Windows, RTX Spark and Surface were on the agenda for its October 7 event, but had not publicly disclosed the specific product details described in those reports. Gizmodo and Windows Central are the outlets covering the claims.

The configuration details below should therefore be read as reported possibilities, not a confirmed product specification sheet.
What configurations were reported?
Windows Central reported two processor tiers and a wider range of memory options than Gizmodo’s summary. The figures are attributed to reporting, not independently verified specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- Brilliant Display – Stunning 13.8" PixelSense touchscreen[1], with brilliant LCD display[2], unleashes luminous whites, deeper blacks and colors so richly saturated bringing vivid life into every frame – perfect for work, school, streaming and creative tasks.
- Power that lasts all day – With 20 hours of battery life[3], the new Surface Laptop powers through your entire day, so you can create, work and stream from morning to night without reaching for a charger.
- Work at the speed of your ideas – Built with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite (12 Core) processors, Surface Laptop delivers fast, AI‑accelerated performance—making it the most powerful Surface laptop for everything from multitasking to demanding workloads.
- The ports you need – Charge on-the-go, transfer data fast, or create the ultimate desktop set up with two USB-C / USB4[4] ports.
- Built-in AI Companion – Work smarter, create freely, and communicate with confidence—Copilot[5] on Windows 11 is always there to help.
| Reported tier | Memory options | Reported Windows edition |
|---|---|---|
| 18-core RTX Spark | 24GB or 32GB | Windows 11 Home on entry consumer configurations |
| 20-core RTX Spark | 32GB, 48GB, 64GB or 128GB | Windows 11 Pro on higher consumer configurations |
Windows Central reported a 15-inch screen and a peak HDR brightness figure of 2,000 nits, but those details also remained unconfirmed in the reviewed coverage. Neither outlet provided a final configuration list.
Why the memory difference matters
The reported tiers suggest distinct audiences. The 18-core model, with up to 32GB of reported memory, appears positioned as the entry consumer option. The 20-core version’s reported 48GB, 64GB and 128GB options could be aimed at developers and creators handling demanding local AI or creative workloads. That is an interpretation of the reported segmentation, not a confirmed Microsoft positioning statement.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
Memory capacity alone does not establish how quickly a laptop will run a particular model or creative application. Performance also depends on the final hardware, software support, power limits and workload. The reports do not provide controlled tests to answer those questions.

Bowden reported that Microsoft may demonstrate the laptop and RTX Spark running local models described as having 120 billion parameters, with workflows that do not require the cloud. In his Windows Central article, he wrote that the event would focus on “how Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark are capable of running local 120B parameter models that enable on-device AI experiences and agentic workflows without requiring the cloud.” That is Bowden’s source-based reporting, not a direct quotation from Microsoft.

Windows Central also reported that sources expected Microsoft to demonstrate performance while unplugged. The cited articles do not include a completed demonstration, independent testing, battery-runtime figures under load or a controlled comparison with a MacBook Pro. A model’s parameter count by itself is not a performance result.
What remains unknown?
- Final specifications: the core counts, memory options, screen details and other reported features were not yet confirmed in the reviewed coverage.
- Price: Windows Central said sources had not confirmed pricing. The report relayed an expectation that the entry model could start above $2,000, but that was not a verified price.
- Launch and availability: the reviewed reports did not establish a confirmed launch date or retail availability.
- Real-world performance: there were no independent benchmarks or controlled comparisons with Apple laptops in the cited articles.
Is it really a MacBook Pro rival?
The comparison is a useful way to describe the rumored market position, but it does not show that the Surface Laptop Ultra matches or beats a MacBook Pro. The reporting points to a potentially high-memory Windows laptop with an emphasis on local AI; it does not establish relative speed, battery life, creative-app performance or value.

A meaningful comparison will require confirmed configurations and prices, plus tests of the workloads a buyer cares about. For local AI, that means examining supported models and performance both plugged in and on battery. For creative work, it means comparing the relevant applications and project sizes—not relying on core counts or memory ceilings alone.
