Project Lyra names it as its primary target and documents an on-device modkit and runtime. The Zune 30, Zune 80/120, and Zune 4/8/16 are separate Classic-family platforms, and the available documentation does not establish broad homebrew compatibility for them. That also does not mean every game or app works on every Zune HD: there is no complete model-by-model list of compatible homebrew titles.
Which Zune models have documented homebrew support?
For the clearest documented community-mod route, look to the Zune HD, also known as Pavo. Project Lyra describes it as its primary target, documents a persistent runtime and modkit, and says Lyra can be installed on a Zune HD over Wi-Fi using the device’s browser. This is evidence for a modding route, not a guarantee that any particular homebrew game will run.

The Zune 30, Zune 80/120, and Zune 4/8/16 belong to the distinct Classic family. Lyra’s documentation describes less device-level verification for Classic hardware, so the HD instructions should not be assumed to apply to those players.

How the Zune families compare
| Models | Platform and documentation | What that means for homebrew |
|---|---|---|
| Zune HD / Pavo | Lyra documents firmware 4.5 and Windows CE 6 R3, names the HD as its primary target, and describes an on-device runtime and modkit. | Strongest documented option for community modding. Individual game compatibility is not established by the platform documentation alone. |
| Zune 30 / Keel | Classic family, Windows CE 5. Lyra says this is the only Classic device it has examined in depth; the work relies mostly on static firmware analysis with minimal live instrumentation. | The available evidence does not support promising broad homebrew compatibility. |
| Zune 80/120 / Draco | Second-generation HDD Classic models based on the Classic 3.x platform. Lyra says Draco has not been analyzed on its own. | Compatibility is uncertain in the available documentation. |
| Zune 4/8/16 / Scorpius | Second-generation flash Classic models based on the Classic 3.x platform. Lyra says Scorpius has not been analyzed on its own. | Compatibility is uncertain in the available documentation. |
These families are not interchangeable just because parts of their interfaces look alike. Lyra notes differences in operating system, system-on-chip, and graphics and audio backends, and describes its Classic architecture analysis as less certain than its Zune HD work. A mod or game tested on one family should not be presumed to transfer to another. See Project Lyra’s documentation for its current device and modkit details.

Official Zune games are not the same as homebrew
Old installation advice often concerns Microsoft’s official apps and games, not community-created software. Microsoft’s archived instructions say that Zune HD apps could be downloaded through the Marketplace on the device or through Zune PC software and synced. For non-touchscreen Zune players, the instructions describe opening the Player Update screen and choosing “Install Games.” These historical steps do not demonstrate that non-HD models run homebrew, and current Marketplace availability is not established. The archived answer is at Microsoft Learn Q&A.
A community setup guide gives a separate method for adding archived app or game packages through the Zune software’s Applications folder and syncing them to a Zune HD. The guide explicitly labels its instructions “Zune HD only”; it also warns that apps dependent on external services may no longer work if those services have changed or shut down. Treat it as community guidance, not a Microsoft compatibility guarantee: Add apps and games (Zune HD only).

What to check before choosing a player
- Identify the exact model. “Zune” covers the HD and several Classic models with different platform families; do not rely on appearance or a seller’s broad description.
- Check the target project’s own instructions. For Lyra, confirm that the intended mod or runtime still lists your device and follow its current installation guidance.
- Separate platform support from game support. A documented modkit does not certify a particular game, firmware combination, or dependency.
- Expect legacy-service limits. An archived app can depend on online services that are no longer available.
If buying a used player specifically for this route, the relevant model is a Zune HD. Check the exact model, working condition, and included accessories; used stock and seller condition vary, and availability is not established here.
Why the Zune HD recommendation is specific
Microsoft announced the Zune HD in 2009 with a 480 × 272 display. Its launch announcement also described 720p video output through a separately sold HDMI audiovisual dock to an HDTV; the footnote says 720p content was downscaled to fit the player’s display and that the dock and HDTV were required for HD-resolution viewing. These launch-era hardware details do not establish homebrew compatibility, but they help distinguish the HD model from the Classic players. Microsoft’s announcement is available at Microsoft News.
