ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is a strong Microsoft Word replacement to try if you want a free desktop suite that can work offline and often exchange DOCX files. Its publisher says the editors support DOCX and run on Windows, macOS, and Linux, but that is not proof that your documents will keep their formatting. Test your own files before making it your default.
It is not the right answer for everyone. LibreOffice Writer is another no-cost desktop option; Apple Pages may suit people already using Apple devices; and Microsoft offers a free web version of Word that could be enough if you do not need a different app.

Why ONLYOFFICE is worth considering first
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is a desktop office suite for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, forms, and PDFs. Its home-use page describes the desktop editors as free and open source, lists Windows, Linux, and macOS, and says they support DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. Those features make it a plausible choice if you want to edit locally and regularly exchange Microsoft Office files.

Choose LibreOffice Writer if open source and no-cost software are priorities
LibreOffice is a no-cost, open-source office suite. Its Writer word processor is presented for tasks ranging from quick notes to full-length books. That makes it a credible general-purpose desktop alternative, but the available product information does not establish how its DOCX fidelity compares with ONLYOFFICE’s. Choose based on your needs and test your files rather than assuming one is better at preserving Word formatting.

Choose Pages if you already work in Apple’s ecosystem
Apple’s Pages support materials cover document setup, annotations and drawing, table-of-contents navigation, book publishing, and editing through Pages for iCloud in a browser. Those are useful capabilities for Apple-focused users. The material does not establish identical availability or behavior across non-Apple platforms, or prove that Pages preserves Word formatting in every case.

Stay with Word if the free web version covers your work
Switching may be unnecessary if you only need basic document editing. Microsoft lists a free Word web option for one person with real-time collaboration, basic spelling and grammar, basic templates, dictation, and 5 GB of cloud storage. Check Microsoft’s current offering for your country and account before relying on particular features.

Test your documents before switching
Format support alone cannot tell you whether a replacement will handle your specific files. Run a small trial with representative documents before moving work or asking collaborators to change tools.

- Gather representative files. Include a simple document, a complex template or layout, and a file with comments or tracked changes if you use review workflows.
- Open each file in the candidate app. Check page breaks, tables, images, headers and footers, fonts, and other layout details that matter in your documents.
- Make realistic edits. Add text, revise a section, and use comments or tracked changes where relevant. If collaboration matters, check the available sharing and co-editing workflow.
- Save a copy as DOCX and reopen it in Word or the app your recipients use. Look for shifted content, missing elements, or review changes that no longer appear as expected.
- Exchange the file with a collaborator if possible. Confirm that both sides can read and respond to comments and tracked changes in the way your work requires.
Keep the original files unchanged during this trial. If a complex document does not survive the round trip reliably, retain Word for that workflow or use the alternative only for simpler documents.
Decide using the workflow, not just the app name
- Operating system: ONLYOFFICE lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Pages is a natural option for Apple users, while the cited support material does not establish its behavior across non-Apple platforms.
- Offline use: ONLYOFFICE describes desktop editing as available offline as well as online. If you depend on offline work, verify the exact workflow you need before switching.
- DOCX fidelity: Test your own layouts, comments, and tracked changes. Vendor statements about compatibility are not a substitute for checking work-critical documents.
- Collaboration and review: Consider whether you need simultaneous editing, comments, mentions, version history, or track changes. ONLYOFFICE lists these capabilities, but confirm that its workflow fits your collaborators.
- Storage preference: Decide whether you want files kept locally, stored in a cloud service, or managed through a self-hosted setup. ONLYOFFICE describes desktop, online, and self-hosted options; evaluate the specific deployment you intend to use.
- Cost and suite needs: Compare the cost of the software with the other office applications you need, not just word processing. The cited pages describe ONLYOFFICE desktop editors and LibreOffice as free, and Microsoft lists a free web Word option; confirm current terms and regional availability before deciding.
What the available product information can—and cannot—settle
The cited product pages describe features and formats, but they do not provide an independent, controlled comparison of how well these apps preserve Word files. That means there is no supported basis here to declare one universally best for DOCX fidelity. The most useful answer is conditional: try ONLYOFFICE first if offline desktop editing and DOCX exchange are central, then decide based on how it handles your actual files and collaboration needs.
