Daniel Pertu says that is what happened with pub-trivia.app: when players could not use WebSockets and fell back to polling, a venue-wide request budget could reject legitimate traffic and take the game offline for everyone there.
How one address came to represent a room full of players
In a pub, many phones may connect through the same Wi-Fi router and leave the venue through one public IP address. That arrangement is called network address translation (NAT): the outside service sees a shared address, not necessarily a distinct public IP for each phone.

Pertu describes WebSockets as the quiz app’s normal way to deliver live updates. If a WebSocket connection cannot be established, clients may instead poll the server for updates. In his illustrative degraded-mode calculation, 100 players polling six times per minute generate 600 polling requests per minute, before joins, page loads, and answers. That arithmetic is Pertu’s example, not a measurement of typical pub attendance or a universal traffic profile.

If many phones share one venue IP, their requests draw from the same budget. Polling alone in the 100-player example would exceed that limit, so the fallback intended to keep play working could instead be rejected.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
That is the mismatch: the limit counted a network address, while the workload came from many people. NGINX’s official guidance flags the same risk: “Note that IP addresses can be shared behind NAT devices, so limiting by IP address should be used judiciously.” NGINX: Limiting Access to Proxied HTTP Resources.
Model the traffic when the normal path fails
A limiter designed around a successful join burst may not cover the request pattern that appears when a live connection fails. For each endpoint, estimate both ordinary use and plausible degraded modes, then aggregate the load across clients likely to share an IP.

- Normal path: account for joins, page loads, answers, host actions, and the usual live-update transport.
- Fallback path: include polling frequency multiplied by the number of active clients behind one exit IP.
- Combined traffic: add requests from other active flows rather than treating polling as the venue’s entire workload.
- Uncertainty: use the model as a capacity and policy check, not as proof that every venue has the same number of players or that every WebSocket failure triggers polling.
Pertu also gives a smaller illustration: 60 phones polling six times per minute would produce 360 requests per minute. It is another author-published example, not an independently measured venue statistic. Daniel Pertu’s follow-up example.
Choose the limiter key for the endpoint
The key should correspond to the behavior being controlled. If the concern is one participant polling too frequently, an IP address shared by the whole room is a poor substitute for participant identity. Pertu says pub-trivia.app uses participant IDs for player-facing polling and answer submission, and the authenticated user ID for host controls.

He retains IP-based limits for selected endpoints such as sign-in, password reset, and joins, as well as a broad proxy guard. Those rules address different situations: the requester may not yet have an authenticated identity, or the address may still be a useful signal. Pertu’s endpoint choices are an account of his implementation, not a universal rule that these particular routes should always be IP-keyed.
His stated design principle is “The key is the design, not the limit.” The practical implication is to decide what one unit of allowed behavior means on each route before setting its threshold. An IP budget may be sensible for one purpose and unfair for another. Pertu’s account of the app’s limiter keys.

What the reported limit change does—and does not—show
Pertu reports increasing the app’s broad global guard from 300 to 1,200 requests per minute per IP. That is the author’s configuration change, not an independently validated safe threshold. The cited account supplies no independent production telemetry or quantified before-and-after outcome, so it does not establish how often venues were blocked or how much the change improved availability.
A larger shared-IP budget can reduce false positives for aggregated legitimate traffic, but it also changes how much traffic the broad guard permits from one address. The figure should be derived from the service’s expected aggregation, abusive-traffic risk, route mix, and operational evidence; it should not be copied as a general recommendation. Pertu’s incident is useful chiefly as a reminder that a number cannot repair a key that represents the wrong unit.

Decide what happens if the limiter’s datastore fails
The app’s rate limiter uses Upstash Redis, and Pertu says it fails open when Redis is unreachable: requests continue without rate-limit enforcement. That preserves application availability if the limiter’s datastore is unavailable, but it also removes that protection for the duration of the failure.
Fail-open and fail-closed behavior are trade-offs, not interchangeable defaults. A service should decide which failure is more tolerable for each operation: temporarily accepting requests without the limiter, or denying legitimate requests because enforcement cannot be checked. The choice should reflect the consequences of abuse and of blocking normal users, and should be monitored so a datastore outage does not silently become an unprotected period.
Make the rate-limit error path usable
A rate-limit response is part of the user experience. Pertu says the app exempts its /too-many-requests destination from the limiter and makes it publicly reachable. Without the exemption, a request redirected to the page could hit the same rule again; without public access, an unauthenticated visitor could be sent into an authentication redirect instead of seeing the explanation.
Keep the error destination outside the rule that routes users to it, and test it both for signed-in and signed-out visitors. A crawler directive is a separate concern: Pertu says the route is disallowed to crawlers, but that policy does not determine whether a human visitor can access it. For API clients, communicate throttling through an appropriate response and retry guidance rather than relying solely on a browser redirect.
A practical review for shared-network rate limits
- Map the endpoint’s unit of behavior. Decide whether the limiter is protecting an account, participant, route, or broad network boundary.
- List the available identities. Use participant or authenticated-account identity where it matches the behavior and is available; treat IP as a shared network signal, not a guaranteed person identifier.
- Model normal and fallback traffic. Include polling or other degraded-mode requests, then aggregate clients that may share a NAT exit.
- Set and observe endpoint-specific budgets. Check legitimate use and abuse patterns before changing a global threshold, and make clear whether a published number is a local configuration or a measured result.
- Choose and monitor datastore failure behavior. Document whether enforcement fails open or closed and what the application does while the limiter cannot be reached.
- Exercise the error route. Verify that it does not rate-limit itself, works for unauthenticated users, and gives clients a useful recovery path.
For pub-trivia.app, the reported change combined a higher global guard with identity-based limits on player and host actions. The broader engineering lesson is to limit the unit whose behavior matters, while accounting for the many legitimate clients that may share one address.
