Microsoft’s answer to agentic AI risk on Windows rests on three platform pieces: containment, identity, and manageability. Its October 7, 2026 Windows Experience Blog post says Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) is generally available on Windows 11 and lets organizations define file and network access policies that are enforced at runtime. Those are Microsoft’s own descriptions. The sources available for this article include no independent testing of how well these controls stop attacks, so the sections below separate what Microsoft has announced from what has been verified.
What changed, and when
Four dated sources define the current picture. Read them together, because the status of MXC changed between June and October 2026.

| Date | Source | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| November 18, 2025 (last updated) | Microsoft Learn article on agentic security | Documents the platform security model for agents; the label is the last-updated date on the page. |
| June 2, 2026 | Windows Developer Blog, by Dana Huang (Corporate Vice President, Windows Security) and Logan Iyer (Corporate Vice President, Windows Platform + Developer) | Describes the MXC SDK as an early preview. |
| October 7, 2026 | Windows Experience Blog, by Pavan Davuluri (Executive Vice President, Windows + Devices) | States that MXC is generally available on Windows 11 and introduces hybrid intelligence and permission-based Copilot actions. |
| Accessed October 9, 2026 | Microsoft Support page for experimental Windows features | Documents preview behavior of the agentic setting and the Copilot Actions workspace. |
The October announcement is the later status update. Anyone who read the June post should treat the SDK’s early-preview label as superseded by Microsoft’s October statement that MXC is generally available on Windows 11. Availability can still differ by device, edition, and organizational configuration, so check the current state before planning a deployment.

Microsoft describes the platform’s agent security as the combination of containment, identity, and manageability. Each part answers a different question: what the agent can touch, who the agent is acting as, and who can set and review the rules.

Containment: limiting what an agent can reach
Containment restricts an agent’s access to files and networks. Under MXC, an organization defines which files and networks an agent may use, and Microsoft says those policies are enforced at runtime rather than only recommended. The isolation boundary depends on the workload. Microsoft describes a range of Windows integrations, from process and session isolation through WSL containers and virtual machines to Windows 365 for Agents, so an administrator chooses the boundary that fits the agent rather than applying one universal sandbox.
In the June developer announcement, Dana Huang and Logan Iyer wrote: “Security for agents must be built into the foundation by design so they can be developed, deployed and governed with confidence.”
Identity and attribution: knowing which agent acted
Identity separates an agent’s activity from the signed-in user’s own activity. Microsoft’s developer documentation describes tagging agent-driven processes and tokens so that actions can be attributed to the agent that performed them. This matters for audit: a log entry should show whether a person clicked something or an agent did it. The sources do not say how a given log or management console displays this attribution, so verify the output in your own tenant before relying on it.

Manageability: policy, monitoring, and governance
Manageability connects agent execution to existing enterprise controls. Microsoft names Agent 365 and Intune as the main management surfaces, and its security materials also reference Entra, Defender, and Purview. Microsoft presents these as tools for policy, monitoring, and governance. They are an enterprise layer. A home user does not need to configure any of them to use consumer Windows features.

User oversight: permissions and preview controls
Microsoft’s October announcement says Copilot acts with the user’s permission. The clearest detail on controls comes from Microsoft’s experimental-feature documentation for Copilot Actions, which is a preview. That documentation describes an agentic setting that is off by default, a separate agent account and workspace created when the setting is turned on, monitoring of the user’s activity, and requests for additional authorization before some sensitive actions. These details describe the preview. They should not be read as proof that every control applies in the same way to the hybrid intelligence Copilot features announced in October.
Where MXC runs: isolation options
Microsoft presents several workload options rather than a single container. The table lists what Microsoft names and what the cited sources do not establish.
| Workload option | How Microsoft describes it | Independent comparison of strength or performance |
|---|---|---|
| Process isolation | Named among the Windows integrations that MXC can use | Not stated in the cited Microsoft sources |
| Session isolation | Named among the Windows integrations that MXC can use | Not stated in the cited Microsoft sources |
| WSL containers | Named among the Windows integrations that MXC can use | Not stated in the cited Microsoft sources |
| Virtual machines | Named among the Windows integrations that MXC can use | Not stated in the cited Microsoft sources |
| Windows 365 for Agents | Named among the Windows integrations that MXC can use | Not stated in the cited Microsoft sources |
The practical choice is therefore one of fit. A lighter boundary may suit a narrow task, and a stronger one may suit an agent that needs broad file or network reach, but the sources offer no benchmark showing how the options compare on security or speed. Test the agent’s real workload against each option before standardizing.
Which agents are supported today
Microsoft names the following agents as MXC-supported: OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, OpenClaw, Replit, LM Studio, NVIDIA OpenShell, and Unsloth AI. It also says more integrations are coming, including Anthropic Claude Code, Box, and Egnyte, along with others it did not list. Those future integrations should be treated as announced, not shipping. Confirm each agent’s status with its vendor before assuming MXC coverage.

Hybrid intelligence and Copilot
The October announcement also introduces what Microsoft calls hybrid intelligence: agents and features can run on local models, use cloud models, or be routed between them depending on where a task should run. Copilot is described as using local context and taking action only with the user’s permission. Microsoft says hybrid intelligence Copilot features are expected to begin rolling out on Copilot+ PCs “in the coming months.” The announcement gives no specific date, so do not plan around a launch day.
Pavan Davuluri summarized the direction in the October 7 post: “That’s why we’re building Windows as the home for hybrid intelligence: a platform where agents can run locally when it makes sense, reach the cloud when they need to, and operate with the security and manageability organizations expect.”
Risks Microsoft identifies
Microsoft says agents can make mistakes. It also describes cross-prompt injection, in which malicious content inside a document or interface element overrides an agent’s instructions. The outcomes it names include unintended actions such as data exfiltration and malware installation. Containment and user authorization are Microsoft’s responses to those risks. They reduce the chance and scope of harm, but Microsoft does not present them as eliminating the threat.

What the evidence does and does not show
- Established: the security model, MXC’s general availability on Windows 11 as of October 7, 2026, the named agent integrations, and the preview behavior documented for the Copilot Actions setting.
- Not established: independent comparative testing, measured reductions in security incidents, or third-party validation that MXC blocks a specific class of attack.
- Not established: adoption figures. The announcement includes model and hardware details, but those describe performance and capability, not security outcomes.
Every statement about protection effectiveness in this article is therefore Microsoft’s own account of its platform.

Checklist for organizations evaluating agent controls
- Confirm that MXC is available on your Windows 11 builds and that the agents you plan to run are on Microsoft’s supported list.
- Write the file and network allowlists each agent needs before enabling it, and test that policies are enforced at runtime.
- Choose the isolation boundary for each workload and record why, since Microsoft does not rank the options.
- Check that agent-driven actions are attributable in your logs and management tools.
- Connect policy and monitoring to Intune, Agent 365, Entra, Defender, or Purview as your environment requires.
- Define which sensitive actions need a human approval step, and who gives it.
How to tell which features apply to your PC
Consumer Windows users face a simpler question: which agent features are on their machine right now. Check whether the device is a Copilot+ PC before expecting hybrid intelligence features, since Microsoft ties the initial rollout to that hardware class. Then look for the agentic setting in the experimental features area of Windows before assuming Copilot Actions is active. If the setting is off, the preview workspace and its separate agent account do not exist on that device. Treat any feature that asks for permissions as one to read carefully before approving.

Availability and preview status are changing, and the sources cited here reflect the state as of October 9, 2026. Check Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog and the Windows Developer Blog for the latest status before making a purchase, deployment, or policy decision.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft’s Windows agent security design is coherent: contain what an agent can reach, attribute what it does, and let organizations manage it centrally. As of October 7, 2026, Microsoft says MXC is generally available on Windows 11, but the protection claims remain the company’s own, not independently measured. Verify availability for your devices and agents, and design your controls around the approvals and allowlists your organization actually needs.
