A deep learning model is a machine-learning model built from a neural network with multiple processing layers. Training adjusts the network’s internal weights so that, given an input such as an image, a sound clip, or a sentence, it produces a useful output such as a label, a prediction, or newly generated content.
What a deep learning model is made of
Three parts matter for the definition. The first is the neural network, a architecture of connected computational units often called artificial neurons. The second is the set of layers: the input layer receives the data, one or more hidden layers transform it, and the output layer produces the result. The third is the set of weights, numerical values on the connections between units that determine how strongly one signal influences the next. A deep learning model is the trained combination of these three parts.

The word “deep” refers to that stack of processing layers. It does not describe a special kind of intelligence or a particular product. IBM’s introduction to the subject, published September 15, 2025, describes the learned mapping from input to output as a set of nested mathematical operations (IBM, “What Is Deep Learning?”, September 15, 2025).

How data moves through a deep learning model
Using a trained model follows a consistent sequence, whether the task is classifying photos or predicting text:
#1 Best Overall
- Language Published: English
- Binding: hardcover
- It ensures you get the best usage for a longer period
- Input encoding. Raw data such as pixel values, audio samples, or tokenized text is converted into numbers the network can process.
- Layer-by-layer transformation. Each layer multiplies its inputs by weights, adds a bias, and applies a non-linear function. The output of one layer becomes the input of the next.
- Output. The final layer returns a result: a probability for each class, a predicted value, or the next piece of a generated sequence.
Training runs the same path in reverse as well. The model’s output is compared with a target or other learning signal, an error value is computed, and the weights are adjusted to reduce that error across many examples. This is how the model’s behavior is shaped by data rather than by hand-written rules.
The layered image example
Google Cloud’s introductory explanation uses an image to illustrate the idea: early layers can respond to simple features such as edges, middle layers combine them into shapes, and later layers recognize whole objects. That sequence is an illustration, not a guarantee. Individual architectures learn different internal representations, and a reader should not assume every model builds features in exactly this order.

Where deep learning sits among AI, machine learning, and neural networks
The terms are nested rather than interchangeable. Artificial intelligence is the broadest field. Machine learning is the subset in which systems learn patterns from data instead of following only explicitly programmed rules. Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses neural networks with multiple processing layers.

| Term | Scope | Typical characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| Artificial intelligence | Broadest field, covering any technique that makes machines perform tasks associated with intelligence | Includes rule-based systems as well as learned models |
| Machine learning | Methods that learn from data | Includes many model types besides neural networks, such as decision trees and linear models |
| Deep learning | Neural networks with multiple processing layers | Learns intermediate representations inside the layers, which are often hard to inspect directly |
Deep learning is not a synonym for generative AI. It can be used for discriminative tasks such as classification, and for generative tasks such as text-to-image generation, depending on the architecture and the training objective.

How many layers make a model “deep”?
There is no universal cutoff. Introductory sources differ on how they count. Some describe a deep network as one with multiple hidden layers, while others count the input and output layers in the total. For that reason, the safer teaching point is the concept: a deep model has enough stacked processing layers to learn intermediate representations, and the exact number depends on the architecture and convention being used.
What deep learning models are used for
Common application areas include:
- Image recognition, such as labeling or locating objects in photographs
- Speech recognition, converting spoken audio into text
- Natural-language processing, including translation and text understanding
- Text-to-image and other generative tasks
In its 2022 overview “A decade in deep learning, and what’s next,” Google listed deployed examples including searchable photos, email reply suggestions, translation, and flood alerts. Those are examples of applications in which deep learning has been used, not a statement that every product in these areas relies on it.
Trade-offs to weigh before using one
Deep learning brings practical costs that depend on the model, the task, and the deployment setting:

- Compute. Training at scale can require substantial processing hardware and time.
- Interpretability. The learned representations are flexible but difficult to explain. IBM notes that the resulting systems can be hard to interpret.
Common misreadings
Two misunderstandings come up often. The first is treating “neurons” as biological. Artificial neurons are computational units inspired loosely by biology; they are not models of brain cells. The second is assuming that a deep learning model reasons or understands the way a person does. A trained network maps inputs to outputs according to patterns in its training data, and its success on one task does not establish general comprehension.

Where to go deeper
The textbook Deep Learning by Ian Goodfellow, Yoshua Bengio, and Aaron Courville was published by MIT Press in 2016. The authors’ official site describes it as a resource for students and practitioners and offers a free online edition. It is useful for going further, but it is not required to understand the definition above.
