Microsoft temporarily disabled Ask Copilot on the taskbar for some Windows Insiders during an August 2026 update to the Copilot app. The company says it is updating the experience and incorporating feedback, but it has not identified the feedback behind the change or announced when the taskbar feature will return. The available evidence does not show that “nobody wants Copilot.”
What changed on the Windows 11 taskbar?
Microsoft’s Copilot on Windows release notes say version 152.0.4191.25 began rolling out to Windows Insiders on August 14, 2026. The update previewed changes to the Windows Copilot app, which could include adjustments to its taskbar icon, visuals, navigation, and feature availability. As part of that work, Microsoft temporarily disabled Ask Copilot on the taskbar.

Microsoft’s stated explanation was: “As we implement these changes, we’re temporarily disabling Ask Copilot on the taskbar to update the new experience and incorporate your feedback.” The statement appears in Microsoft’s Copilot on Windows release notes; no individual speaker is named.
When will Ask Copilot return to the taskbar?
Microsoft has not provided a return date in the release notes. The notice describes a temporary change during the preview, but does not set a schedule for restoring the feature. Windows Central’s August 18, 2026 report likewise said Microsoft had not explained which feedback it was addressing; that report is secondary context, while Microsoft’s notes are the company’s official statement: Windows Central’s coverage.

Does this affect every Windows 11 user?
The notice concerns a Windows Insider preview rollout, not a documented permanent removal for every Windows 11 user. Microsoft says feature availability may vary during the preview. Its release notes do not give a user count or geographic breakdown, so they do not establish how many people have lost access or whether the change applies to general Windows availability.
The same preview notice says Notebooks, Connectors, and Vision may be temporarily unavailable for some users. That warning is about feature availability during the preview; it does not say those features have been permanently removed.

Does Microsoft say users rejected Copilot?
No. Microsoft says it is incorporating feedback, but the cited release notes do not identify the feedback or say that it was negative. Windows Central also reported that Microsoft did not explain what feedback prompted the change. Neither source provides a representative survey, usage figure, or other measure of user sentiment. “Nobody wants Copilot” is therefore not a supported factual conclusion.
