How to Fix Blurry Graphics or Frame Drops in an Open-World RPG on PS5 Pro

To troubleshoot blurry graphics or frame drops on PS5 Pro, first check whether the PS5 is sending the expected video signal, then compare the RPG’s own graphics modes and current game-version guidance. A correct console output resolution does not establish the game’s internal rendering resolution, and TV settings cannot guarantee a fix for game-side performance.

First determine whether the problem is in the game or the display signal

Note what the symptom looks like and when it occurs. Is the game consistently soft, does it look blurrier while moving, or do you see flicker, a blank screen, or an unexpected resolution or refresh rate reported by the console? This distinction helps decide what to test next; no one symptom identifies a single cause.

  • If the picture is soft in-game while the PS5 reports the expected output, focus next on the game’s graphics options and title-specific updates.
  • If the picture flickers, disappears, or the output mode looks wrong, isolate the connection and display path as well as checking console settings.

Check the PS5 Pro’s video output

Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, then review Current Video Output Signal and Resolution. Sony says the console detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. That describes the output sent to the display; it does not tell you what resolution the RPG renders internally. Sony’s resolution guide also says that if your display supports 1440p, you can test SDR/HDR at 60 Hz or 120 Hz and VRR, and select 1440p as the output resolution.

Confirm that the selected output is appropriate for your screen rather than assuming that changing it will sharpen the game. If the output already matches the display’s capabilities and the softness appears only in one RPG, continue with the game’s own settings.

Test VRR and 120 Hz only if the game and display support them

VRR is intended to adjust refresh rate in real time, but it requires a compatible TV and game, and Sony says results vary by TV. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, you can turn off Apply to Unsupported Games if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. Treat this as a compatibility test, not a guaranteed frame-rate fix.

120 Hz Output is useful only when both the game and display support 120 Hz. Sony advises turning it off if supported games cause video-output problems. Test one setting at a time and compare the same scene so you can tell whether a change affects the symptom.

For flicker or unstable output, check the HDMI signal path

If the issue is flicker, Sony recommends trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2 under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output; limiting the 4K transfer rate may improve picture quality. This is a signal troubleshooting step, not an established remedy for blurry game rendering or game-side frame drops. The tradeoff is that these settings restrict some output modes: -2 limits more of the listed modes than -1, including 4K 120 Hz and certain 4K color formats. Recheck the active output after changing the setting. Sony’s guide lists the affected modes.

For a blank, unstable, or unexpected high-resolution or high-refresh-rate signal, work through the physical path before buying anything. Sony’s picture and sound troubleshooting guidance supports checking the HDMI connection, connecting the PS5 directly to the display, using the display’s appropriate HDMI port, and checking display firmware.

  • Start with the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 and check that it is firmly connected.
  • Connect the console directly to the TV or monitor temporarily to rule out a receiver or other device in between.
  • Confirm that the chosen HDMI port supports the resolution and refresh rate you are trying to use, and check for display firmware updates.
  • Consider a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable only if testing points to a faulty cable or a capability mismatch. A replacement cable is not a fix for frame drops caused by the game.

Compare the RPG’s own graphics settings

Once the output path is behaving as expected, check the named game’s current settings and publisher support information. If it offers fidelity or quality and performance modes, compare them in the same location under similar conditions. Judge image clarity and stability while moving, then compare smoothness and frame pacing in the same demanding scene. The available modes and their tradeoffs depend on the specific RPG; there is no universal best mode.

Record the game version and check the publisher’s current release notes or support page before concluding that a setting or bug applies. Without the game’s identity and version, it is not possible to establish which modes it offers, whether a patch addresses the issue, or whether the title has a known PS5 Pro problem.

Use Enhance PSSR Image Quality as a controlled comparison

The PS5 Pro’s Enhance PSSR Image Quality option applies only to certain PSSR-compatible games. Sony says it is on by default and can be turned off at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. If the RPG is confirmed compatible, compare the same scene with the option on and off. Do not assume it will correct blur in an unspecified game; the comparison is useful only for a compatible title.
