What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Microsoft Teams won’t start on Windows, first identify where it fails: no window, a stuck loading screen, a crash, a reconnect problem, or a sign-in error. Fully quit Teams, check that the PC is online, and reopen it. Then use the symptom—and whether Teams on the web works—to decide what to try next. No single fix is established for every launch failure.
First identify what “won’t start” means
Notice what happens after you click Teams: no window appears, a loading screen remains, the app closes, or it opens but cannot reconnect or sign in. These are different failure stages. A sign-in status code can help diagnose a sign-in failure, but it does not explain a launch that produces no window.

If an error or status code is visible, write it down or take a screenshot before changing settings or removing cached data.
Try the low-risk checks first
- Check connectivity: Open a browser and visit an ordinary website. If it does not load, address the PC’s internet connection before treating Teams as the cause.
- Fully quit Teams: If Teams is running, use its taskbar icon to quit it rather than simply closing the window. Open Teams again from Start.
- If Teams opens but is disconnected: Sign out and sign back in if the app allows it. This is a reconnect check, not a guaranteed fix for an app that never opens.
Microsoft’s reconnect guidance covers these basic checks. If you can’t find the exact symptom there, don’t assume the same steps diagnose every kind of launch failure.

Test Teams on the web
Open teams.microsoft.com in a browser and try to use your account. Microsoft recommends the web version as an alternative when troubleshooting reconnect problems.
- Web Teams works, desktop Teams does not: The immediate problem appears limited to the desktop route, but this test does not identify its cause. Continue with desktop-specific steps.
- Web Teams also fails: Check connectivity, sign-in, and account or service access rather than assuming the desktop app’s local cache is to blame.
You can use web Teams while troubleshooting the desktop app; using it does not repair that app.

If the app reaches sign-in, capture the status code
When a sign-in screen appears, record any displayed status or error code. Microsoft’s sign-in guidance describes examples involving authorization and mismatched credentials. Follow the listed basic steps; if they do not resolve the issue, contact your work or school IT administrator. Organizational account or authorization problems may require administrator help.

Microsoft’s reconnect page describes a Windows cache-clearing procedure: quit Teams, open %appdata%MicrosoftTeams, and delete the folder contents. It says this does not uninstall Teams, but it removes locally cached items, including icons, thumbnails, local message history, display images, and add-ons.

Use this step only if that location and procedure match your Teams installation. The guidance may describe a particular app generation or installation, and cache locations can vary. If you are unsure—especially on a managed work or school PC—check with IT before deleting data.
Reinstall only after simpler steps fail
Reinstallation is a later step, not the first response to a failed launch. Microsoft’s Windows uninstall guidance says to remove both Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer when both are listed in Windows Apps.

Reinstall through the official route that applies to your personal or managed setup. If your organization deploys Teams, do not work around its deployment controls; ask IT how to reinstall it.
Use a clean boot only as a later interference check
If the failure persists and background software may be interfering, a Windows clean boot can help investigate that possibility. Microsoft describes clean boot as starting Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so background interference can be isolated. Its guidance is general Windows troubleshooting, not a Teams-specific fix.
Best Value
- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- Plug-and-Play USB Computer Headset: Simply plug the USB-A connector into your computer and you’re ready to talk or listen without the need to install software
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure carefully, avoid casually disabling security controls, and restore normal startup afterward using the same guidance. If Teams works only in a clean boot, that suggests a background conflict; it does not identify the responsible program by itself.
Quick Recap
Choose the next step by the evidence
| What you observe | Next useful step | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| No window, loading screen, or immediate close | Check internet, fully quit Teams, and reopen it; then test web Teams. | These checks may separate a basic connectivity issue from a desktop-only failure, but they do not establish a cause. |
| App opens but cannot reconnect | Sign out and back in if possible; try web Teams. Consider the documented cache procedure only if it fits your installation. | Whether web Teams works helps distinguish the immediate desktop route from broader connectivity or account access trouble. |
| Sign-in screen shows an error or status code | Record the code, follow Microsoft’s sign-in guidance, and contact work or school IT if the basic steps fail. | The code is relevant to sign-in diagnosis; it does not diagnose a silent launch failure. |
| Failure continues after basic checks | Consider reinstalling; consider clean boot only if background interference is plausible. | These are later, more disruptive or diagnostic steps. Clean boot can help investigate interference but is not a confirmed Teams fix. |
