Some people find it useful, but many want it smaller, moved, or fully hidden—especially on smaller screens or when bandwidth is tight.
This guide covers every practical way to manage “see myself” self-view across Teams for Windows, macOS, the web client, and mobile (iPhone/iPad and Android). You’ll also get troubleshooting steps when your self-view won’t stay hidden.

What Microsoft Teams Means by See Myself During Calls
“See myself” is Teams’ self-view video tile—the small camera preview of you while you’re on a call or in a meeting. Depending on the client and layout, it may appear as a draggable tile, a pinned panel, or a preview window.
Teams has multiple views (together mode, gallery, and focus layouts). Self-view behavior changes with the layout and sometimes with meeting policies.

Why You Might Be Seeing Yourself (Common Causes)
- You have your camera on (Teams always shows you what it’s sending).
- Active gallery-style layout keeps your tile visible even when you don’t want it.
- You switched devices (external camera vs. built-in webcam) and Teams reinitialized the video feed.
- You’re joining as a presenter and the layout changes to emphasize participant tiles.
or organizer settings may influence how the participant grid behaves.
Before You Change Anything: Check Your Video Source
If you’re seeing yourself but don’t like the camera feed quality or you suspect the wrong camera is active, fix that first. Teams self-view reflects the camera input it’s currently using.
- On the call screen, find the Camera (or device) selector and confirm the correct camera.
- If you’re using a USB webcam, disconnect/reconnect once, then rejoin.
- Confirm you’re not using a virtual camera (common with OBS, ManyCam, or face filters) unless you want that effect.
Control Self-View on Desktop (Windows and macOS)
On desktop, Teams usually lets you minimize, move, or hide your self-view tile depending on the active layout. The exact button labels can vary slightly by Teams version, but the flow is consistent.
Microsoft Teams for Windows (classic desktop app)
Use the layout controls and tile actions while you’re in the call.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Join or start the call/meeting.
- Look at the self-view tile (your face) near the participant grid.
- Try switching layouts using Gallery / Focus / Large gallery options (labels vary by view). In many cases, Focus reduces your tile visibility.
- Hover over your self-view tile to reveal controls.
- If you see a Hide or Turn off my camera option, use that to remove the live self preview. Turning off your camera is the most reliable way to make self-view disappear.
- If your tile is draggable, move it off-center or shrink it by selecting the layout that uses fewer tiles on screen.
Microsoft Teams on macOS (Mac app)
On macOS, the fastest way is still switching layout or turning off your camera.

- Join the meeting on your Mac.
- From the meeting toolbar, locate Layout options (Gallery/Focus-style controls).
- Choose Focus if available. This typically reduces the participant grid and can hide your tile from the main view.
- If you only need your video off, click Camera to turn it off. Your self-view should stop updating immediately.
- If your tile still appears, switch layouts once (Gallery → Focus → back) and watch whether the tile returns.
Control Self-View on the Web (Teams in a Browser)
The web client generally follows the same rules: self-view stays tied to your camera state. Layout controls can reduce how prominent the tile is.
- Join the meeting using Teams on the web (browser).
- Open the meeting toolbar and find Layout.
- Select a layout that minimizes the participant grid (for example, Focus if shown).
- To fully remove the live self preview, click Camera to turn off your video.
- If your tile won’t change, refresh the page and rejoin the meeting (do not just mute—refresh resets the UI layout state).
Control Self-View on Mobile (iPhone and Android)
Mobile clients often keep your video preview visible in some form. The reliable controls are layout choice and toggling the camera off.
iPhone and iPad (iOS)
Try layout changes first, then turn off your camera if you need self-view gone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Open the meeting controls toolbar.
- Look for Layout (or an equivalent tile/grid option).
- Choose the layout that shows fewer tiles (often this reduces your own preview prominence).
- If self-view still shows, tap Camera to turn your video off. Your live self preview should stop.
Android
The Android UI may look different, but the same two controls apply: layout and camera.

- If you need self-view completely removed, toggle Camera off.

What You Can and Cannot Hide
It helps to set expectations. In most Teams configurations, you can’t truly “remove yourself from the experience” while your camera is on—your self-view is essentially a live capture preview.
- You can usually hide or de-emphasize the tile by changing layout to Focus and reducing grid size.
- You can reliably stop self-view updates by turning off your camera.
- You can’t control how other participants see you from self-view settings—only your outgoing camera/video state affects that.
Self-View vs. Recording, Screensharing, and Meeting Layout
Self-view is not the same as what’s recorded. If someone is recording, the recording typically captures the meeting video feed(s) based on the meeting’s recording settings.
| Action | Effect on your self-view | Effect on what others/recording receive |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off camera | Live self preview stops; tile often becomes an avatar or disappears | Others see no video from you (audio may still be on) |
| Switch layout | You may see a different arrangement; your tile may be less prominent | No change to what others receive |
| Start screenshare | Your self-view may resize or shift position | Others see your screen; recording may include it if enabled |
Troubleshooting: Self-View Won’t Hide or Keeps Reappearing
If you’ve tried layout changes and your self-view still won’t behave, the issue is usually stale UI state, camera permission problems, or a session-level layout reset triggered by Teams.

Restart the call and reset the layout
- Leave the meeting and rejoin.
- After rejoining, switch layouts once (Gallery → Focus → back) to force the UI to rebuild.
- If you’re in a large gallery, try Focus mode before changing anything else.
Clear the Teams app cache (desktop)
Stuck layouts and video tiles can be caused by cached state. Clearing the cache is a standard fix on Windows/macOS.

(Tips: Incompatible with Windows Hello)
- Windows: Quit Teams completely, then clear the Teams cache folder and restart Teams.
- macOS: Quit the Teams app, remove cached Teams data, then relaunch.
Because Microsoft sometimes changes cache paths between releases, search your current cache location if you don’t see it. The goal is to remove Teams’ stored UI/video state, not your account credentials.
Reset camera permissions and input device
If Teams can’t consistently access your camera, it may rebuild the self-view tile repeatedly.
- Verify camera permission for Teams in your OS privacy settings.
- Confirm the selected input camera matches the one you expect.
- Close any apps that might be using the camera (Chrome tabs, Zoom, OBS preview, photo apps).
- Re-test by turning the camera off and then back on.
Check meeting options and organizer controls
Some meeting experiences encourage gallery-like views and can pull the interface back into a grid when new participants join or when roles change.
- If you’re a participant, ask the organizer whether the meeting uses a specific layout mode or policy.
- Watch what happens when someone joins: if your layout resets every time, it’s likely session logic rather than your device.
Update Teams and test with a different client
Outdated clients can lag behind UI changes that affect self-view behavior.
Best Value
- Update the Teams desktop app to the latest available build.
- If you’re troubleshooting quickly, test the same meeting from a different entry point: web client vs. desktop vs. mobile.
- If you see the problem only in one client, that points to a local install issue or UI version difference.
FAQ
Can I hide my self-view without turning off my camera?
Sometimes. Layout changes like Focus can reduce self-view visibility, but the most reliable way to remove your live self preview is to turn off your camera.
Will hiding self-view stop my video from being sent?
No. Changing layout affects what you see, not what other participants receive. To stop sending video, turn off your Camera.
My self-view comes back when someone joins. Why?
Teams often rebuilds the meeting UI when participants change. Use Focus mode again after new joins, or restart and rejoin to reset the layout state.
Does this differ between classic Teams and the web client?
Yes, slightly. Web may show fewer layout options, and mobile often has a simplified interface. The consistent control across all clients is your Camera toggle.
What if I don’t see any layout controls?
Try hovering on desktop to reveal the toolbar, then switch between Gallery/Focus if available. If controls are missing, your Teams client may be in a restricted meeting mode or the UI is temporarily stuck—rejoin is the quickest fix.
Bottom Line
If your main goal is to stop seeing yourself during Teams calls, turning off your camera is the most dependable method across Windows, macOS, web, iOS, and Android. If you just want less distraction, switch layouts—especially to Focus—to de-emphasize your tile.
When self-view won’t stay hidden, treat it like a UI state problem: rejoin, toggle layouts, and verify camera permissions and input devices. Those steps resolve the vast majority of “see myself” issues in 2024.
