“Teams migration” can mean exporting Teams data for use elsewhere, importing prepared history from another platform into Teams, or moving an existing Teams conversation. Those are different operations: Microsoft documents export and import routes, but not a native command to move channel conversations between Teams. Choose the route based on where the messages start and where they need to end up.
Which Teams migration route do you need?
| Route | Direction and purpose | Important scope distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Teams admin center data export | Export Teams data, particularly when switching from Teams to another provider | Includes 1:1, group, meeting and channel conversations; requires Global Administrator access |
| Teams Export APIs | Export supported Teams data for scenarios such as tenant migration or backup | Supports several chat and channel types; message attachment information may be included, but that does not mean every file is separately exported |
| Microsoft Graph import | Bring prepared third-party message history into an existing Teams chat or channel | Requires an application-permission migration workflow; meeting chats are not supported for chat migration |
| Move an existing Teams conversation | Copy or move messages from one Teams conversation or Team to another | Microsoft says native Teams functionality cannot copy or move channel conversations |
Microsoft describes the admin center export tool as an option for customers switching providers and directs tenant migration or backup scenarios to the Export APIs. Graph import addresses the opposite direction: prepared history from another system going into Teams. The relevant Microsoft documentation is “Export options for switching from Microsoft Teams”, the Teams Export APIs documentation, the Teams migration guide and Microsoft’s Teams lifecycle guidance.

What does a Teams data export include?
Admin center export tool
The Teams admin center data export tool supports 1:1 chats, group chats, meeting chats, channel messages, team and channel structure, rosters, and installed app lists. You need Global Administrator access. Microsoft documents an access period of up to 90 days after access is provided. When an export is ready, its download link is available for 24 hours, and the output is a ZIP file containing JSON files.
An export is a snapshot, not a continuously updated archive: messages created during or after that export are not included in it. If you still have access to the tool, Microsoft says you can run another export during the 90-day access period to capture newer content. The 90-day and 24-hour periods are feature windows documented by Microsoft, not estimates of how long an export takes to run.

- SUPPORT WORK FROM ANYWHERE WITH SYNC: Whether employees are in the office, at home, or somewhere else, Sync device management software helps everyone stay connected by letting you ensure their Logitech video collaboration personal devices are being used and up to date.
- Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
- Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
- On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
- Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.
Export APIs and attachments
The Export APIs support 1:1, group, meeting and channel messages. Microsoft’s documentation also covers features such as reactions, system or control messages, shared-channel messages, retained messages and, under a Teams Retention Policy, edited history for individual and group chats and public or shared channel posts and comments.
For attachments, use the message’s attachments collection to find attachment information. Do not assume that a URL embedded in the message body is directly accessible, or that the presence of attachment information means every underlying file is included as a separate downloadable binary. Check what the export actually contains and handle linked files according to their storage location and access permissions.
How do you import third-party history into Teams?
Microsoft Graph can import prepared third-party messages into an existing chat or channel. This is a migration workflow, not a general-purpose button for copying one Teams conversation to another. Microsoft’s guide describes this sequence:
Rank #2
- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- Plug-and-Play USB Computer Headset: Simply plug the USB-A connector into your computer and you’re ready to talk or listen without the need to install software
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
- Prepare and map the source data. Organize the source messages and map them to the destination chat or channel and the supported message fields.
- Start migration mode. For an existing chat, the Graph documentation provides a
startMigrationoperation. Microsoft also documents channel migration. Teams displays a migration banner while migration mode is active. - Import messages. Use the same app that started the migration session to import the prepared content.
- Complete the migration. The initiating app must complete its own session. Microsoft says completion is necessary for participants to see a consistent view of the chat or channel.
- Verify the destination. Check the imported messages and their supported context in the target conversation.
The migration app needs application permissions. The app that starts the session owns it end to end: it must do the import and completion, and another app cannot take over before the session is complete. Plan for that ownership and permission requirement before starting migration.
What message details can import preserve?
Microsoft lists original message timestamps, reply hierarchy, rich text, inline images, links to existing Microsoft 365, SharePoint Online or OneDrive files, reactions, mentions, emojis, snippets, quotes, announcements and stickers among supported import content. Videos, cross-posts between channels and SharePoint-generated links are listed as out of scope in the migration guide.
This is message-import scope, not a promise that all the source system’s file binaries will be copied into Teams. A link to an existing Microsoft 365 file and the file itself are different things; confirm separately that the destination users can access any linked content.

- ONLINE MEETINGS THAT JUST WORK: Works with all leading online meeting platforms and certified for Microsoft Teams.
- SOLID SOUND: Powerful 28mm speakers deliver richer sound for a better audio experience.
Which conversation types are supported?
The import documentation covers 1:1 and group chats and standard, private and shared channel messages. Meeting chats are included in the admin center export scope, but Microsoft’s Graph API reference says meeting chats are not supported for chat migration. An export capability for a conversation type does not imply that the same type can be imported through Graph.

Can you import external or federated conversation history?
Not simply because a conversation includes an external participant. Microsoft’s migration guide says federated content cannot be imported and that imported content must come from the authenticated tenant. Separately, the completeMigration API reference lists external members as supported for 1:1 and group chats and says the target chat must belong to the tenant of the app that initiated the migration.
These statements address different issues: who may be a member of a target chat, and where the imported content may come from. Support for external membership is not a promise that an organization can import arbitrary history from a federated conversation or another tenant.

Can you move an existing Teams conversation to another Team?
Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance says native Teams functionality cannot copy or move channel conversations. Exporting Teams data is not the same as making a live copy in a different Team, and Graph’s message import is documented for migration of prepared third-party history rather than as a general command to relocate existing Teams messages.
Before choosing an approach, identify whether you need an export for retention or another provider, an import of history from a non-Teams system, or a new conversation in another Team. The available route and its limits depend on that distinction; do not assume an export ZIP can be restored as a native Teams conversation.

Microsoft documents access to user-deleted messages through Export APIs for up to 21 days after deletion. If a retention policy or hold applies, APIs for retained messages may expose some soft-deleted content and edited versions beyond that period. This is not a universal recovery guarantee: the applicable retention configuration and the specific content determine what is available.

- Comfortable on-ear design with lightweight, padded earcups for all-day wear.
- Background noise-reducing microphone.
- High-quality stereo speakers optimized for voice.
- Mute control with status light. Easily see, at a glance, whether you can be heard or not.
- Convenient call controls, including mute, volume, and the Teams button, are in-line and easy to reach.
Deleted Teams and standard, private or shared channels are a separate case. Microsoft documents retrieval for up to 30 days after deletion; after hard deletion, messages cannot be retrieved through that route. The 21-day message window and 30-day Team or channel window apply to different objects and should not be treated as interchangeable recovery periods.
Confirm the tenant’s retention policy and the current Microsoft documentation before relying on either window for a specific recovery. The documented periods describe limits for particular Microsoft features, not a guarantee that every deleted message or file can be restored.
