If your goal is to broadcast a camera, screen, or live meeting to YouTube, you do not need Teams: YouTube’s webcam or mobile tools cover simple streams, while OBS Studio and StreamYard offer encoder-based production workflows. Teams can still be part of a YouTube workflow through documented RTMP-In or SRT-In for meetings and events, when your organization enables the feature. One important date: Microsoft says Teams live events retired on June 30, 2026; qualifying events scheduled before then are supported through February 28, 2027.
Choose a workflow that matches what you are streaming
The best alternative depends on whether you are presenting directly to viewers, producing a multi-source show, or keeping a Teams meeting at the center. YouTube documents three ways to go live: webcam, mobile device, or encoder. An encoder is the more flexible route for screen or gameplay capture, external audio or video equipment, or a production with multiple cameras and microphones.

| Workflow | Best fit | Production control | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube webcam or mobile | A straightforward solo broadcast using a camera or phone | Basic presentation; less suited to a layered, multi-source production | Enable YouTube live streaming ahead of time, and check account and device readiness |
| OBS Studio encoder | Screen sharing, gameplay, scenes, or combining media sources | Software-based production control; configure and operate the production yourself | Configure OBS as an encoder for YouTube, test audio and video, and protect the stream key |
| StreamYard hosted studio | A guided studio-style workflow, including a Teams meeting as part of the production | Service-based workflow; features and destinations depend on the service’s current offering | Check current service limits and confirm the exact YouTube and Teams workflow you need |
| Teams meeting or current Teams event plus encoder | A broadcast where meeting interaction remains central and your organization permits encoder input | Use an external encoder as the media source while retaining Teams in the event workflow | RTMP-In or SRT-In must be enabled through the relevant meeting policy and event setup |
Microsoft lists OBS Studio and StreamYard among validated encoders for Teams. That listing indicates compatibility in the documented protocol context; it is not a ranking of ease, cost, or overall quality. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes the production uses of an encoder separately.

What changed for Teams live events
Microsoft’s encoder guidance says Teams live events retired June 30, 2026. Events scheduled before that date are supported through February 28, 2027. For new planning, Microsoft points organizers toward its unified Teams events experience; its separate live-event support information also directs users toward newer event capabilities. Do not follow an old live-events walkthrough as though it described the current interface for a newly planned event.

This retirement does not mean every Teams-to-YouTube workflow has disappeared. Microsoft’s current encoder documentation covers Teams meetings and events, with RTMP-In or SRT-In available when the organization’s policy and event options permit it. Check the current Teams event setup rather than assuming a legacy live-event option is available.
Using YouTube directly: webcam or mobile
For a simple presenter-led broadcast, YouTube’s own webcam or mobile option avoids the extra production layer of an encoder. It is a sensible starting point if you do not need to combine multiple sources or route a Teams meeting into the stream. YouTube’s available methods and account setup can vary by device and eligibility, so use the live-creation flow shown in your YouTube account.

Using OBS Studio as a YouTube encoder
OBS Studio is the software-encoder choice when you want to assemble a production on your computer before sending it to YouTube. The basic path is to prepare the YouTube broadcast, configure OBS to send the program to YouTube, and test the entire route before the audience arrives. Exact menu wording can vary by OBS and YouTube interface version, so follow the current controls shown in each product rather than relying on a legacy screenshot.

- Confirm YouTube live access. Open YouTube Studio and start the live-creation workflow. If live streaming has not been enabled on the account, allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
- Create or prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, configure the broadcast details and select the encoder workflow. Locate the stream URL and stream key in the stream settings.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. In OBS, add the required sources, such as a camera, display capture, media, or audio input. Set the streaming service and enter the YouTube stream URL and key using OBS’s current stream settings.
- Check the program before going live. Verify that the intended scene is visible, microphones are active at usable levels, and the correct audio is reaching the stream. Make a private or unlisted test where suitable and confirm the preview in YouTube’s control room.
- Start the stream deliberately. Start streaming from OBS and confirm YouTube receives the feed before making the broadcast public or announcing it. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that broadcast.
This is a workflow outline, not a guaranteed bitrate or resolution prescription: the right encoder settings depend on the source, connection, and YouTube’s current recommendations. Check YouTube’s live control room guidance for the current settings appropriate to your stream rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated setup.
Using StreamYard or keeping Teams in the production
StreamYard as a hosted-studio option
Microsoft includes StreamYard in its validated encoder list. StreamYard’s own article describes a workflow that keeps Teams as the meeting hub, connects StreamYard via RTMP, and sends the production to YouTube and other destinations. That is the vendor’s description of its workflow, not independent evidence that it is easier or better for every creator. Check its current plan limits, supported destinations, and setup before relying on a specific configuration.

Teams with RTMP-In or SRT-In
Choose this route when participants need the Teams meeting or event experience, while an encoder supplies the produced audio and video. Microsoft documents two input options:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- RTMP-In: the event setup provides an RTMP(S) endpoint URL and a corresponding stream key for the encoder.
- SRT-In: the event setup provides an SRT URL.
The organizer must have the relevant meeting policy and event options configured to allow the input. Ask your Teams administrator to verify policy and event availability before building the production around this path. Run an end-to-end test with the same encoder, account, and event configuration planned for the broadcast.

These approaches do not make every Teams meeting automatically public on YouTube. You must still configure the YouTube destination and the Teams or encoder path, and confirm that the organization permits the intended event setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose
- Use YouTube webcam or mobile for a simple solo presentation without multi-source production needs.
- Use OBS Studio when you want to compose scenes, capture a screen or gameplay, or work with external audio and video sources, and are comfortable operating an encoder.
- Consider StreamYard if a hosted studio workflow suits your production; verify current features and plan terms directly.
- Keep Teams in the workflow when meeting interaction is important and your organization has enabled RTMP-In or SRT-In for the relevant meeting or event.
Equipment is optional. YouTube identifies external audio and video hardware as an encoder use case, but that does not make a separate microphone, camera, or capture device mandatory. If your current setup gives you adequate sound and picture, start with it; consider a USB microphone only if you need a dedicated audio input.
Pre-stream checklist and common problems
Before the broadcast
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance, especially for a first broadcast.
- If Teams is involved, have the organizer or administrator confirm the meeting policy, event options, and RTMP-In or SRT-In availability.
- Keep stream keys private and share them only with the people and systems that need them.
- Test the complete path: source or meeting, encoder or hosted studio, and YouTube preview.
- Confirm the correct microphone, camera, scene, and destination before starting publicly.
If something does not work
| Symptom | Likely point to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube will not let you start a first live stream | First-time live enablement may still be processing | Allow up to 24 hours, then check the YouTube live-creation flow again |
| The Teams event does not provide encoder input | RTMP-In or SRT-In may not be enabled by policy or event setup; you may be viewing a retired live-events workflow | Ask the Teams administrator to verify the current meeting policy and event options, and use Microsoft’s current encoder guidance |
| The encoder sends no usable feed to YouTube | Destination URL, stream key, encoder configuration, or selected scene may be wrong | Recheck the endpoint and key against the current YouTube stream settings, then test the full path before the scheduled broadcast |
| Viewers cannot hear the presenter or see the intended source | Wrong audio input, muted source, or incorrect scene/source selection | Check the active microphone and scene in the encoder or studio, and verify what appears in YouTube’s preview |
| A previously documented Teams live-event option is missing | The legacy Teams live-events experience retired June 30, 2026 | For a new event, check Microsoft’s unified Teams events direction; the stated support window applies only to events scheduled before retirement |
