The Microsoft Type Cover 2 is a slim keyboard-and-cover accessory announced for the Surface Pro 2, with backlit keys and a trackpad. It remains most straightforward to consider as a legacy accessory for that device: Microsoft’s current guidance does not provide a model-by-model compatibility entry for Type Cover 2 across newer Surface generations, and current stock, prices, and used-item condition are not established here.
What is the Surface Type Cover 2?
Microsoft announced Type Cover 2 in September 2013 alongside Surface Pro 2. It was designed to serve as both a keyboard and a protective cover, attaching through the Surface cover port. Microsoft described it as retaining the original Type Cover’s thin, lightweight design while adding backlit keys. Its announcement named Cyan, Magenta, Purple, and Black as colors expected in the following months. Microsoft’s launch announcement describes those original product details.

The Surface Pro 2 launched with Windows 8.1 and a fourth-generation Intel Core i5 processor. Its specifications include a 10.6-inch, 1920 × 1080 display, a cover port, and a two-position kickstand. Microsoft says one kickstand angle suits desk typing and the other lap typing. The Surface Pro 2 specifications provide the device context; they do not establish that every later Surface uses the same Type Cover fit.

TIME reviewer Harry McCracken’s 2014 review found that double-tap-and-drag support improved drag-and-drop for his use. He also reported inconsistent two-finger scrolling between apps and a dead zone near the top edge of the small trackpad, which reduced its usable area. These are one reviewer’s observations in the software context of 2014, not results from current testing. Read the contemporary TIME review.

That account suggests a mixed experience rather than a blanket verdict: the added gesture support addressed one interaction, while scrolling behavior and the small trackpad remained drawbacks for the reviewer. The available sources do not establish comparative measurements for key feel, trackpad quality, or weight.

Will Type Cover 2 fit your Surface?
For a Surface Pro 2, the cover port and Type Cover role are confirmed by Microsoft’s device and support information. For other Surface Pro generations, do not assume a specific Type Cover 2 fit based only on general compatibility language. Microsoft’s current keyboard guidance says Surface Pro Type Covers are compatible with Surface Pro 7+ and earlier models, but it does not provide a model-by-model compatibility table for Type Cover 2. Check the listing and your exact device before buying. Microsoft’s Surface keyboard and Type Cover guidance recommends checking compatibility details for each product.
