The two bright galaxies resemble eyes, a smaller bright galaxy looks like a nose, and the arcs form the grin. NASA added the Hubble image to its Photojournal on February 10, 2015, as PIA18794.
Why does SDSS J1038+4849 look like a face?
The face is an accidental pattern in the image, not a literal feature of the cluster. NASA’s Photojournal description puts it simply: “Those eyes are actually very bright galaxies, and the smile lines are, in reality, arcs caused by an effect known as strong gravitational lensing.” The smaller bright galaxy between them supplies the nose-like spot.

The arcs come from background galaxies whose light has been distorted on its way to us. NASA describes the ring-like structure as an Einstein Ring, associated with a close, symmetrical alignment of the background source, foreground lens, and observer. The visible smile is best described as Einstein-ring-like: not every set of lensing arcs makes a complete, geometrically perfect ring.
How does gravitational lensing make the arcs?
SDSS J1038+4849 is a galaxy cluster in the foreground. Its mass curves spacetime, bending light from objects farther away as that light travels toward Earth. Depending on how the source, cluster, and observer line up, the background light can be stretched into arcs, magnified, or seen in multiple images.

In this image, the alignment makes the distorted light appear as curved lines beneath the two bright foreground galaxies. Lensing is more than a visual curiosity: magnification can make otherwise faint, distant objects observable, while the way light bends helps astronomers model a cluster’s mass, including matter that does not emit light.
What is the Hubble image, and how was it made?
The image is NASA Photojournal archive item PIA18794, titled “Smile, and the Universe Smiles With You.” NASA’s Photojournal record gives its addition date as February 10, 2015. A related Hubble mission article, “Hubble Sees a Smiling Lens,” appeared February 9, 2015; NASA credits its text to ESA.

NASA’s account says the cluster was studied with Hubble’s Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) and Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) as part of a survey of strong gravitational lenses. The Photojournal metadata specifically lists WFPC2 for this archive entry. The image-detail page reports dimensions of 1280 by 1263 pixels, and the Photojournal offers JPEG and TIFF downloads.
The image credit is NASA, ESA, and Michael Gladders (University of Chicago), with an acknowledgement to Judy Schmidt. NASA notes that Schmidt submitted a version to the Hubble Hidden Treasures image-processing competition.

What can this image tell us—and what does it not establish?
The grin makes the lensing effect easy to spot, but the image sources do not establish the cluster’s distance or identify the individual background galaxy or galaxies that produced the arcs. The archival date and image dimensions are image metadata, not measurements of the cluster. The important scientific point visible here is how foreground mass can reshape and magnify background light, giving astronomers a way to investigate both distant objects and the mass of the lensing cluster.
