What is a Microsoft Surface tablet?
It is a portable computer built around a touchscreen and touch or stylus input, running Windows rather than a mobile-only tablet operating system. Microsoft describes Surface Pro as a 2-in-1 that shifts between tablet use and a laptop-like setup with a keyboard. Microsoft’s explanation of PC tablets and laptops outlines that distinction.

Microsoft’s current product page identifies the family as Surface Pro 12th Edition and presents it as a 2-in-1 laptop/tablet. That is a current product-page label, not a permanent definition of the Surface range; check the specific generation and configuration you are considering. See Microsoft’s Surface Pro page.
Is a Surface a tablet or a laptop?
It depends on the model and how it is set up. A Surface Pro is designed to serve as a tablet without a keyboard, and as a laptop-like device when paired with a compatible keyboard. A Surface Laptop, by contrast, is a traditional laptop with a built-in keyboard. So “Surface” alone does not identify a tablet. Microsoft’s Surface model comparison distinguishes the product forms.

What changes between tablet and laptop use?
| Use | Typical setup | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Tablet | Use the Surface Pro touchscreen for touch input; a compatible pen can support stylus input. | Confirm pen compatibility for the exact device. |
| Laptop-style typing | Connect a compatible Surface Pro keyboard. | Microsoft says the keyboard is sold separately; check whether it is included and fits the model generation. |
| Traditional laptop | Use a Surface Laptop with its built-in keyboard and trackpad. | Compare the particular model’s configuration and features. |
Microsoft describes tablet uses including reading, note-taking, browsing, calls, and productivity; these are product guidance, not independent performance comparisons. Its tablet-use guide discusses touchscreen, keyboard, and pen workflows.
What to check before choosing one
- Form factor: Decide whether detached tablet use or a laptop’s built-in keyboard better suits your routine.
- Inputs: Consider whether you will mainly use touch, a compatible pen, or a keyboard for extended typing.
- Exact configuration: Compare the listed processor, memory, storage, and display for the specific generation rather than assuming all Surface Pro devices are alike.
- Accessories: Verify whether the keyboard or pen is included and whether it is compatible with that device.
- Region: Microsoft notes that features and availability may vary by region, so check the local product listing.
For a simple distinction between form factors, Microsoft defines a tablet PC as a portable touchscreen device designed primarily for touch or stylus input, while a laptop has a built-in keyboard and trackpad. Microsoft’s Windows device guide provides that general definition.
