Mostly yes, with conditions. On the 13-inch Surface Pro 12th Edition (2026), Windows on ARM is good enough for mainstream productivity, and the independent hands-on review we draw on reports that Photoshop and Premiere Pro ran on the Snapdragon X2 Plus configuration it tested. It is not a universal compatibility pass. Software that depends on unsupported drivers, peripherals without ARM drivers and some legacy programs still need checking one by one. This article is a synthesis of Microsoft’s published specifications and independent reviews from MyNextTablet and RTINGS, not our own bench testing.
Which Surface is this?
This is the Surface Pro 13-inch, 12th Edition, released in 2026. Microsoft’s current product guide lists two processor families: the Snapdragon X2 Plus (10-core) and the Snapdragon X2 Elite (12-core). Memory options go up to 64 GB, and the 13-inch screen comes as an LCD or an OLED option. Those core counts describe the chips, not benchmark results.

Do not confuse it with the 2024 Surface Pro 11th Edition, which launched with Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite. Listings for the two generations can look alike, so check the edition name and the “X2” in the processor name before buying.
The independent review cited here, by Andrzej Tokarski at MyNextTablet (published September 18, 2026), tested the X2 Plus with 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Its findings apply to that configuration and that reviewer’s workload. They are not a controlled survey of software compatibility.

Does Windows on ARM actually work well now?
The platform rules
Microsoft’s guidance sets out how apps behave on ARM-based Windows:
- Native Arm64 apps run directly on the chip and make the best use of it.
- Most x86 Win32 apps run through emulation, and x64 emulation widens the range of software that works.
- Anything that relies on a driver needs an ARM-based Windows driver. This covers some hardware tools, specialist peripherals and certain utilities.
What the review found
MyNextTablet reports responsive everyday and office work, and successful use of Photoshop and Premiere Pro on the X2 Plus unit. Video editing was weaker than on a MacBook Pro with M5. The active cooling was usually quiet but audible during exports.

The review does not claim that every app works. No source we reviewed gives a population-level ARM compatibility rate, so any percentage you see quoted elsewhere is not backed by this evidence.
Where to be careful
- Printers, scanners, audio interfaces, security dongles and other hardware that needs its own driver.
- Niche or older Windows software that the publisher has not tested on ARM.
- Tools that install kernel-level drivers, which emulation cannot cover.
Before buying, check each publisher’s ARM support statement for the apps and peripherals you rely on. If you find a single deal-breaker, an x86 machine is the safer choice.

Performance, display and configurations
RTINGS describes the generational update as modest overall. It finds faster CPU and graphics performance and a higher memory ceiling than the 11th Edition, while the overall experience stays similar. That makes the 11th Edition a reasonable option for buyers who do not need the newer processor or the larger memory tiers.
Microsoft’s two display options are an LCD and an OLED. We did not find independent measurements of either panel for this edition, so judge the OLED’s appeal on contrast and media use at a store demo if you can.

Battery life: two numbers, two methods
| Source | Result | How it was measured |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft | Up to 15.5 hours local video playback | May 2026 tests of preproduction Snapdragon devices; 1080p local video |
| Microsoft | Up to 11.5 hours active web use | Same preproduction tests; twelve popular websites across multiple tabs |
| MyNextTablet | 7.15 hours | Looped HD YouTube video at maximum brightness on the X2 Plus, 16 GB, 512 GB unit |
These figures are not directly comparable. Microsoft’s are manufacturer estimates on preproduction hardware, and results vary with use and settings. The reviewer’s number is a deliberately harsh streaming test and not an all-day-use figure. Real mixed use at normal brightness should land between the two, but no source here measured it.
Tablet-first design versus a laptop
RTINGS contrasts the Surface’s compact detachable and tablet use with the usability of a conventional clamshell, and it notes broader x86 compatibility on its Intel alternative. The Surface makes the most sense if you value touch, pen input, the OLED option and a portable tablet form. A traditional x86 laptop suits you better if you depend on legacy Windows software or mostly work on your lap.

- [All day battery life] — 14 hours of battery life[5], fast charging with 65W PSU via Surface Connect or USB-C.
Keyboard and pen
These are separate, model-specific accessories. Microsoft’s compatibility list covers 13-inch keyboards with pen storage, and the Signature Keyboard for listed 12th Edition business devices. Confirm the exact model, and check what is in a retail bundle. A keyboard or pen does not necessarily ship in the box, and a Slim Pen is optional.
Which configuration to buy
- Storage: the reviewer considers 256 GB tight on the standard configuration and recommends at least 512 GB. That is buying advice, not a requirement. Microsoft lists removable Gen 4 SSD options, and the review describes the SSD as replaceable. Confirm the form factor and compatibility before buying a replacement drive.
- Memory: the tested unit had 16 GB, which handled the Photoshop and Premiere Pro work described. Heavier editing is where the higher tiers, up to 64 GB, would matter. We found no measurements of those tiers.
- Chip: X2 Plus is the version with independent coverage. X2 Elite adds cores (12 against 10), but we found no independent testing of it.
- Total cost: add the keyboard and pen to the price. Prices and availability change, so check current retailer listings.
How it compares with the alternatives
| Factor | Surface Pro 12th Edition | Surface Pro 11th Edition | x86 convertible or laptop |
|---|---|---|---|
| App and driver compatibility | Emulation for most x86 apps; drivers must be ARM-based | Same ARM model | Broadest, including legacy software |
| Form | Detachable tablet with touch and pen | Same concept | Varies; clamshells are better on a lap |
| Performance and memory | Faster CPU and GPU; memory up to 64 GB (Microsoft, RTINGS) | Similar experience, lower ceiling (RTINGS) | Varies by model |
| Cooling | Active cooling; audible under export (MyNextTablet) | Not tested for this article | Varies |
Do not read 2024 test results for the 11th Edition as measurements of the 12th Edition.
Verdict
If your work is browsing, Microsoft 365, creative apps with ARM or well-behaved emulated versions, and you want a lightweight tablet with a keyboard, the 12th Edition shows that Windows on ARM is no longer a compromise for mainstream use. It is not the right pick if one essential program or peripheral lacks ARM support, if you want the strongest video-editing performance (the reviewer put it behind the M5 MacBook Pro), or if you want a laptop for lap use first. Check your own app list first. Then buy 512 GB or more.
