A passive optical network (PON) is a fiber access network in which one provider-side device serves multiple customer endpoints over shared optical fiber that is split using passive components, typically optical splitters. The splitting happens without powered electronics at the splitter location, which is where the word “passive” comes from.

The three building blocks of a PON

The IEEE Technology Navigator describes an EPON deployment this way: “An EPON deployment consists of three main elements: the OLT at the central office, the passive optical distribution network with one or more optical splitters, and the ONUs located at customer premises.” The same three-part structure applies to PON designs generally, including those in ITU-T specifications.

  • OLT (optical line terminal): the provider-side endpoint, usually in a central office or other access facility. It is powered, active equipment.
  • ODN (optical distribution network): the fiber and optical distribution segment between the provider and the customers. ITU-T PON documents use this term. Its splitters are the passive part.
  • ONU / ONT (optical network unit / terminal): the customer-side endpoint that terminates the optical connection. Which of the two names is used varies with the standard and with deployment language. This is also powered, active equipment.

What “passive” does and does not mean

It does not mean the network has no powered equipment. The OLT and the ONU/ONT are electronic devices that need power. “Passive” describes only the distribution path: an optical splitter divides a shared feeder fiber toward several endpoints without a powered switching device at the splitter’s location.

This is the practical appeal of the design. A single fiber from the provider branches to several subscribers, so the outside plant between the two ends needs no electrical supply.

Fluke Networks FIBERLERT-125 Fiber Optic Cable Tester and Detector
  • Detects optical power in single-mode and multimode fiber wavelengths (near infrared range 850 to 1625 nm)
  • No setup or interpretation needed – light and sound indicate presence of optical signal
  • “Non-contact” detector lessens the risk of damage to fiber optics; suitable for ports and patch cords, SM, MM, UPC and APC connections
  • LightBeat flashes to indicate operation and battery status; powers off after five minutes to preserve battery (2xAAA, included)
  • Two-year warranty

How the pieces fit together

  1. The OLT in the provider’s facility sends and receives optical signals on a feeder fiber.
  2. The feeder enters the ODN, where one or more passive splitters divide the optical path toward multiple subscriber fibers.
  3. At each premises, an ONU or ONT terminates the fiber and presents the service to the customer’s equipment.

Split ratio, optical budget, reach and physical layout are all set by the operator’s design. No single value is universal, so they cannot be inferred from the term “PON” alone.

PON, GPON and EPON

PON is the umbrella architecture. GPON and EPON are separate standards families within it, and passive distribution alone does not make their equipment interchangeable.

6 Pack LC to ST OS1 Fiber Patch Cable 1M(3.28FT),Singlemode Duplex
  • Exceptional Signal Purity of OS1: The LC to ST Singlemode Fiber Patch Cable with OS1 fiber offers exceptional signal clarity by minimizing dispersion, ensuring stable and reliable performance over long distances. It maintains signal integrity across hundreds of kilometers, making it perfect for critical long-distance communications.
  • LC to ST Connector Compatibility: The LC to ST fiber patch cable seamlessly integrates LC connectors, commonly used in modern networking equipment, with the more traditional ST connectors, often found in legacy systems, ensuring compatibility and smooth operation across various devices.
  • Low Loss & High Bandwidth: Single-mode OS1 fiber patch cable exhibits exceptionally low signal attenuation (typically ranging from about 0.35dB/km to 0.4dB/km) at wavelengths of 1310nm and 1550nm, assuring efficient data transmission even over tens or hundreds of kilometers. This feature, coupled with its substantial bandwidth potential, guarantees superior performance in extending networks across vast distances.
  • LSZH Material: The LC to ST Singlemode Fiber Optic Patch Cable uses a Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) jacket material. This material is designed to minimize the release of harmful halogen gases and is resistant to fading, breaking, and deformation. The fiber core, made of silica glass, is known for its low signal attenuation and high-bandwidth transmission capabilities.
  • Mechanical Properties: LC to ST Single mode Duplex OS1 fiber patch cords operate at -20ºC to +70ºC and have a minimum installation bending radius of 5.0 cm and a minimum long term bending radius of 3 cm. This OS1 LC to ST Fiber Patch Cable Single mode is specially designed for fast Ethernet, Fiber Channel, Gigabit Ethernet Speeds, data center, premises, educational, LAN, SAN, commercial applications.
Family Standards body and reference Notes
GPON (gigabit-capable PON) ITU-T G.984 series; G.984.1 covers general characteristics The ITU-T database lists the 2008 edition of G.984.1 as in force, with later amendments. G.984.5 covers wavelength bands for additional signals over GPON ODNs.
EPON (Ethernet PON) IEEE 802.3 ITU-T G.9801 describes OMCI-EPON and references 1G, 10/1G and 10/10G EPON architectures defined in IEEE 802.3. IEEE materials also describe a 25 Gb/s EPON amendment with specific compatibility conditions.

IEEE identifies EPON and GPON as the major deployed PON families. The standards landscape keeps evolving, but a published standard does not guarantee that a given subscriber can use an arbitrary upgrade module or terminal.

  • Supported line rates and whether they are symmetric
  • Wavelength plan and how it coexists with other signals
  • OLT/ONU interoperability and management support
  • The provider’s installed network and provisioning requirements

The standards references above confirm that the families are distinct and that rate variants exist. They do not give a complete like-for-like comparison of performance or cost, so avoid treating either family as simply “faster” or “cheaper” without operator-specific figures.

What this means for subscribers

A compatible ONU or ONT must match the provider’s network technology and provisioning. The network is provider-managed, so a subscriber should not alter it. Splitters are infrastructure parts chosen for a designed optical link, and their split ratio, connectors, wavelength range and loss must match the system. If a service problem arises, the provider’s own terminal and support channel are the right starting point.
