Choose the laptop that runs the apps you need; neither the Surface Laptop nor the MacBook Air is a universal winner. Once your operating-system needs are clear, compare the exact size and configuration: the current Surface range spans three screen sizes with different refresh rates and ports, while Apple’s published Air specifications list a 13.6-inch display and two Thunderbolt ports. Don’t use manufacturer battery estimates or older head-to-head tests as proof that a current model is faster or lasts longer.
Start with operating system and app compatibility
The first question is not which laptop has the better headline specification; it is which operating system and software fit your work. Confirm that specialized, work-critical, or peripheral-dependent apps support the specific device you plan to buy. If a required app works on only one platform, that settles the choice more decisively than a general comparison.

If either platform will work, decide whether you prefer Windows or macOS, then compare the configurations available in your region. Match processor, memory, storage, screen size, and price rather than comparing product-family names alone.
Compare the screens you would actually buy
Microsoft lists Surface Laptop models with 13-inch, 13.8-inch, and 15-inch screens. Their resolutions and refresh rates differ substantially, so the size you choose changes more than portability.

| Model | Screen specifications listed by Microsoft | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop 13-inch | 1920 × 1280 touchscreen, 60 Hz | Smallest listed Surface option; lower refresh rate than the larger models. |
| Surface Laptop 13.8-inch | 2304 × 1536 touchscreen, 120 Hz | Higher refresh rate and resolution than the 13-inch model. |
| Surface Laptop 15-inch | 3270 × 2180 touchscreen, 120 Hz | Largest listed Surface screen, at the highest listed resolution. |
| MacBook Air | Apple’s specifications page lists a 13.6-inch, 2560 × 1664 display. | The cited Apple specifications also list MagSafe 3, a headphone jack, and two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports. |
Surface models in this listing are touchscreens; Apple’s cited Air specifications do not establish a touchscreen. If touch input matters, check the exact Air model’s official specifications before deciding. Screen size, resolution, and refresh rate are not interchangeable measures of overall display quality, and the listed specifications alone do not establish which screen looks better to you.
Check ports against your everyday accessories
The Surface Laptop’s port selection changes by size. A configuration that connects your accessories directly may save you from carrying a hub; check the exact model before buying.

Read battery claims and performance comparisons carefully
Microsoft advertises battery life of “up to” 23 hours for the 13-inch Surface Laptop, 20 hours for the 13.8-inch, and 19 hours for the 15-inch. These are Microsoft estimates based on the company’s stated configurations and test conditions, not independent results or a direct comparison with Apple’s advertised battery figure. Real use and configuration can affect battery life. Check Microsoft’s current Surface Laptop specifications and testing notes before treating any estimate as relevant to a particular configuration.

The available independent head-to-head test is not a current-generation comparison. RTINGS’ comparison, updated August 11, 2026, covers the Surface Laptop 7th Edition 15 (2024) and MacBook Air 13 (M4, 2025). In those tested models, RTINGS reports advantages for Surface in display brightness, port selection, and tested battery life, and advantages for the Air in touchpad size and speaker sound. Those findings apply to those devices, not the Surface Laptop 8th Edition. They do not establish a current performance or battery-life winner. Read the RTINGS comparison and its tested-model details.

Apple’s cited specification page establishes the Air’s listed display and ports, but the available details do not establish enough about current-generation configurations or prices to make an equal-price comparison with those Surface models. Which one should you buy?
- Choose Surface Laptop if Windows or a required Windows app is decisive, or if a particular Surface size, touchscreen, 120 Hz display, or listed port combination fits your needs.
- Choose MacBook Air if macOS or an app that depends on it is decisive, or if its 13.6-inch screen and listed Thunderbolt, MagSafe, and headphone connections fit your setup.
- If both fit: compare the exact configurations at current local prices, then choose based on screen size, ports, portability, and your preferred operating system. Treat battery and performance rankings as unsettled unless you can find independent tests of the same generations and configurations.
