Microsoft says U.S. availability begins October 16, 2026.
What the “AI supercomputer” description means
Microsoft presents Surface Laptop Ultra as its most powerful Surface laptop, designed for local AI and 3D graphics. The supercomputer comparison refers to the device’s advertised local compute capabilities; it is not a technical classification Microsoft uses for the laptop. In its October 7, 2026 announcement, Microsoft separately describes DGX Station for Windows as a deskside AI supercomputer. Those are different systems and form factors. Microsoft’s announcement distinguishes them.

Microsoft says the laptop can execute models locally up to 120 billion parameters and deliver up to one petaflop of AI compute. These are manufacturer-stated upper capabilities, not results from independent testing. A model’s parameter count alone does not establish whether it will fit or run well: configuration, quantization, software stack, and workload matter. The claims should not be read as a guarantee that every model of that size will perform well on every configuration.

Microsoft says RTX Spark combines Blackwell RTX graphics and a Grace CPU with unified memory. It also claims the laptop’s thermal system provides up to 2.5 times the thermal capacity of Surface Laptop 15-inch (8th Edition). That is Microsoft’s comparison, not a third-party measurement.
What Microsoft’s AI claims do—and don’t—establish
The advertised figures describe peak capability rather than a tested outcome for a particular application. “Up to one petaflop” does not tell you how fast a particular model will generate output, and “up to 120 billion parameters” does not guarantee that any model at that size will fit or run efficiently in every configuration. The available manufacturer claims do not provide independent benchmark results for real-world model performance.

Microsoft’s October 7, 2026 launch announcement gives the timing.

Surface Laptop Ultra versus the other RTX Spark systems
The laptop, Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, and DGX Station for Windows should not be treated as interchangeable devices.
