Microsoft Releases Five Windows Insider Builds: What’s New in Each

Five Windows 11 preview builds bring different features to Beta, Experimental, 26H1, and Future Platforms Insiders. Here’s what changed in each.

Microsoft released five Windows 11 Insider preview builds on October 2, 2026, spanning Beta, Experimental, 26H1, and Future Platforms tracks. The biggest practical change is a Cloud rebuild option in the 26H1 builds: one preview can reinstall Windows from the recovery environment, while another adds drive sanitization and remote administration. The builds also bring Magnifier zoom controls, File Explorer changes, Unicode 17.0 text shaping support, and smaller fixes. These are separate previews, not one update for all Windows users.

At a glance: five builds, five Insider tracks

Build Track and Windows version Notable changes
26220.9587 Beta, Windows 11 version 25H2 Unicode 17.0 text shaping, Settings home performance work, and a Cloud rebuild entry point in Settings.
26340.9596 Experimental, Windows 11 version 26H2 Unicode 17.0 text shaping, Settings performance work, File Explorer address-bar navigation using ~, and a Cloud rebuild entry point.
28120.3151 Experimental (26H1) Magnifier zoom controls, expanded Cloud rebuild options including drive sanitization, remote administration, and File Explorer refinements.
28020.3142 Beta (26H1) Cloud rebuild from Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), Magnifier zoom controls, and File Explorer refinements.
29680.1000 Experimental (Future Platforms) Windows Share favorites, Settings app-version visibility, File Explorer preview changes, and assorted fixes.

Microsoft’s official notes: Beta 26220.9587, Experimental 26340.9596, Experimental (26H1) 28120.3151, Beta (26H1) 28020.3142, and Experimental (Future Platforms) 29680.1000.

Cloud rebuild: what changes in the 26H1 previews

Cloud rebuild is the most consequential feature in this set, but its capabilities differ by build. The Beta (26H1) preview puts a reinstall flow in WinRE, intended to work even if Windows cannot start. The Experimental (26H1) preview adds drive sanitization and a way for administrators to configure and start a rebuild remotely.

Beta 28020.3142: reinstall from WinRE

In this preview, Cloud rebuild can reinstall Windows from an image and drivers downloaded through Windows Update while the PC is in WinRE. It does not require USB installation media and does not rely on the installed copy of Windows being healthy. The process requires an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection in WinRE. Before proceeding, the user reviews the target build, edition, and language, then confirms a warning that data will be lost. Microsoft’s Beta (26H1) release notes describe the feature.

Experimental 28120.3151: sanitization and remote administration

The Experimental (26H1) build adds Cloud rebuild options to remove files, or remove files and sanitize drives before reinstalling Windows. Microsoft says sanitization uses the storage hardware’s erase capability. It is irreversible, so it is a distinct, destructive option—not a routine part of the reinstall flow. Administrators can also configure and start Cloud rebuild remotely through Recovery CSP. Microsoft’s Experimental (26H1) release notes cover these additions.

Cloud rebuild entry points in 25H2 and 26H2

Beta 26220.9587 and Experimental 26340.9596 list a new Cloud rebuild entry point under Settings > System > Recovery. The 26H1 Beta notes describe the more specific WinRE reinstall flow; the entry-point mention in these other builds should not be taken as evidence that every 26H1 capability is included there. Beta 25H2 notes and Experimental 26H2 notes.

Magnifier adds direct zoom entry in both 26H1 builds

Builds 28120.3151 and 28020.3142 let Magnifier users type an exact zoom percentage in its toolbar or choose preset increments of 5%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 150%, 200%, and 400%. The controls are documented in both Experimental (26H1) and Beta (26H1) release notes.

File Explorer changes differ by build

Build 26340.9596: navigate with a tilde

In Experimental 26340.9596, the address bar accepts ~ as a shortcut to the user’s profile folder and its subfolders. For example, entering ~AppData navigates to the AppData folder under the profile. Microsoft’s release notes list this alongside the Settings improvements.

Both 26H1 builds: folder views, paths, and renaming

Builds 28120.3151 and 28020.3142 include refinements intended to keep folder-view customizations consistent, broaden address-bar path handling, improve the reliability of suggestion dropdowns, and fix rename issues involving repeated selection or changing only the capitalization of a name. These changes are documented in the Experimental (26H1) and Beta (26H1) notes.

Build 29680.1000: changes to previewing downloaded files

In the Future Platforms build, File Explorer lets users choose “Preview anyway” for HTML files downloaded from the web, and automatically previews non-HTML files such as PDFs. Microsoft also lists a fix for an artifact in the preview pane. The build notes describe the change; it is not listed as a change in the other four builds.

Other changes in the 25H2, 26H2, and Future Platforms builds

Unicode 17.0 and Settings performance

Beta 26220.9587 and Experimental 26340.9596 add Windows text-shaping support for Unicode 17.0 and work intended to reduce Settings home-page loading time in some scenarios. Microsoft says Unicode 17.0 added 4,803 characters, including four newly encoded scripts: Beria Erfe, Sidetic, Tai Yo, and Tolong Siki. That figure is Microsoft’s description in its release notes. Beta 25H2 notes and Experimental 26H2 notes.

Future Platforms: sharing, Settings, and fixes

Build 29680.1000 lets users pin favorite apps in the Windows Share window and shows packaged-app version numbers at the top level in Settings. Its other listed fixes address Family Safety age-restriction messages, taskbar polish when the taskbar is positioned in alternate locations, some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices, Remote Desktop window sizing, and extreme lag that can develop over time. Microsoft also lists ongoing performance and VMware-related issues in the build notes. Future Platforms release notes.

These are previews, not a general Windows update

The five builds target different Insider tracks and Windows version tracks, so a feature in one is not automatically available in the others. Microsoft warns that features may roll out to only some Insiders, change, be removed, or never ship beyond the Insider program. It specifically describes Experimental (26H1) builds as potentially unstable and says they may have limited documentation. The Future Platforms channel covers early platform work not tied to a particular Windows release; its notes list ongoing performance and VMware issues.

There are also build-specific cautions. Experimental 26340.9596 has a known installation problem, error 0x80073712, which Microsoft says may be related to Windows Sandbox; disabling Sandbox is offered as a workaround. The release notes for Beta 26220.9587 and Experimental 26340.9596 also explain that their builds are based on Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2, respectively, with Beta 26220.9587 delivered through an enablement package. Check the notes for the exact build and track before treating a feature or workaround as relevant to a different Insider installation.
