Microsoft has announced that the OneDrive app will soon stop supporting iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. The iPhone models affected are the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max: they cannot update to iOS 26, which Microsoft recommends for continuing to get the latest OneDrive app. The cutoff has not yet been given a public effective date, so this is an upcoming change—not a confirmed date when OneDrive will suddenly stop opening.
Which iPhones will lose OneDrive support?
The iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are the reported affected models. They cannot install iOS 26, so they will be left on an iOS version that OneDrive plans to drop. The report also identifies the seventh-generation iPad as affected by the corresponding iPadOS change.

Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guide lists iPhone 11 and later supported generations, as well as iPhone SE (2nd generation) and iPhone SE (3rd generation), as compatible. That does not mean every owner of an affected phone needs to replace it; the practical choice depends on whether continued OneDrive app updates matter to them.

Microsoft’s developer notice on the OneDrive App Store listing says it is planning to drop support for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 “soon,” and recommends iOS/iPadOS 26 or 27 to keep receiving the latest version. It does not give an effective date.

There is a mismatch between that announcement and Microsoft’s published OneDrive system requirements, last updated June 23, 2026: the requirements page still lists iOS 18.0 or later. Treat the App Store notice as Microsoft’s announced plan, not evidence that the minimum requirement has already changed.
MacRumors reported on October 6, 2026, citing Microsoft’s latest TestFlight beta notes, that OneDrive version 18.12.1 is the final version for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. The report did not establish when that change would reach the public App Store, so 18.12.1 should not be treated as a confirmed public cutoff version.

Will OneDrive stop working on an iPhone XR, XS or XS Max?
Not necessarily when the announced change takes effect. MacRumors reported that already-installed versions are not expected to stop working immediately. However, once support ends, those versions are expected to receive no further OneDrive app updates, fixes or features. That expectation comes from the report, not a guarantee from Microsoft.

How to check your iPhone model and available updates
- Open Settings > General > About to see the model name and installed iOS version.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update to check for an iOS update available for your phone. Install the latest version Apple offers for that device.
- While your iPhone can still receive OneDrive updates, keep the app current. Also verify that important files are accessible from another device or through the OneDrive website.
The affected XR, XS and XS Max cannot update to iOS 26, according to MacRumors. Updating to the newest iOS Apple offers may still be worthwhile, but it will not make those phones compatible with iOS 26.

There is no one right choice for every owner. If your installed OneDrive version continues to meet your needs, keeping the phone avoids a purchase and preserves your current setup, but leaves you dependent on an app that is expected to stop receiving updates and fixes. Moving to an iPhone compatible with iOS 26 offers a path to later OneDrive app versions, but involves device cost and checking that your other apps and workflows still suit the new phone.

Apple’s compatibility list establishes iPhone 11 and newer listed models as an iOS 26-capable route; it does not establish that buying a phone is necessary for every affected owner. Microsoft 365 or a OneDrive storage subscription does not resolve an iOS compatibility limit.
