Identify the product name and edition—not just the word “Office”—to understand what you have.
What “Microsoft Office version” means
The phrase can refer to a release year, a product edition, or its servicing model. Office 2024 and Office 2021 are release names; Home and Home & Business identify consumer editions; Office LTSC identifies a commercial fixed-feature line. Microsoft 365 Apps is a subscription-serviced product line rather than a dated one-time-purchase release.

These labels are not interchangeable. Two products may both include Word and Excel yet differ in which apps are included, how they are paid for, whether they receive new features, and whether cloud services are part of the offering. Microsoft’s Office suites overview describes one-time-purchase Office suites as desktop apps for one device, without Microsoft 365 services and some cloud-backed features.

What the release-year names tell you
Office 2024
Office 2024 is the current consumer one-time-purchase release covered here. The Home edition includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote; Home & Business adds Outlook. Both are for one PC or Mac. These editions are distinct from the commercial Office LTSC 2024 product.
Office LTSC 2024
LTSC means Long-Term Servicing Channel. Office LTSC 2024 is for commercial and government customers that need a fixed-feature release. It does not receive feature updates after launch, and Microsoft gives it five years of mainstream support without extended support. This is different from Microsoft 365 Apps, which continues to receive features and must be kept current. See Microsoft’s Office LTSC 2024 overview for the commercial product description.
Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021
Office 2021 is a prior consumer release; Office LTSC 2021 is its commercial fixed-feature counterpart. Microsoft lists October 13, 2026, as the end-of-support date for Office LTSC 2021. The date applies to that LTSC edition, not automatically to every product whose name contains “2021.” Check the specific product’s lifecycle entry.

Office 2019 and Office 2016
Microsoft lists Office 2019 and Office 2016 as no longer supported. Their general end-of-support date was October 14, 2025. Support for connecting those releases to Microsoft 365 services ended earlier, on October 10, 2023. The two dates describe different support questions: desktop product lifecycle versus connectivity to services such as Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive.
Why support dates need careful reading
A product’s general end-of-support date and its ability to connect to Microsoft 365 cloud services are not necessarily the same. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance for older Office versions lists October 14, 2025, for Office 2016 and Office 2019, and October 13, 2026, for Office LTSC 2021. Its separate connectivity guidance says support for Office 2016 and 2019 connections to Microsoft 365 services ended October 10, 2023.
For the newer releases, Microsoft lists October 9, 2029, as the retirement date for consumer Office 2024 editions under the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Office LTSC 2024 receives five years of support through October 9, 2029, under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy, with no extended support. Those dates apply to the named editions and lifecycle policies, not to Office as a whole.

How to choose the right kind of version
- Choose based on payment: Office Home 2024 and Home & Business 2024 are one-time-purchase suites; Microsoft 365 Apps is subscription-serviced.
- Check the apps: Home 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Home & Business adds Outlook. Office LTSC 2024 on Windows includes those apps plus Access.
- Decide how you want features delivered: LTSC is fixed-feature after launch; Microsoft 365 Apps continues to receive feature updates.
- Account for online services: One-time-purchase suites do not include Microsoft 365 services and some cloud-backed features. If your work depends on Microsoft 365 connectivity, check Microsoft’s current compatibility and lifecycle guidance for the exact release.
- Match the product to your setting: The Home editions are consumer suites for a PC or Mac; LTSC is a commercial and government deployment option. Do not assume they are interchangeable because both contain familiar desktop apps.
How to identify the version you have
Look for the product name and edition in the Office app or the Microsoft account associated with the purchase. Record the full label—for example, Office Home 2024, Office Home & Business 2024, Office LTSC 2021, or Microsoft 365 Apps—rather than relying on a generic “Office” label. Then check that exact product in Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance if you need to know whether support or Microsoft 365 service connectivity remains available.
An internal version number alone can be misleading. Microsoft says Office LTSC 2024 uses major version 16.0, which is also used by Office LTSC 2021 and volume-licensed Office 2019 and 2016. Use the marketed product name and its lifecycle entry, not the shared major number, to identify the release. Microsoft documents this in its Office versions and Microsoft 365 services connectivity guidance.
