Installing an Office update can improve security and reliability, but a specific update may also disrupt a workflow. Microsoft’s advice is not to roll back automatically: weigh the severity of the problem against the benefits of the latest update, check whether Microsoft has documented it, and use rollback only as a considered troubleshooting step. The right choice depends on the issue, your Office edition and update channel, and whether your organization manages the installation.
Why Office updates can feel like a no-win choice
Updates matter because Microsoft releases security fixes for supported Office editions. At the same time, Microsoft acknowledges that an automatic update can sometimes introduce unexpected behavior. That is a trade-off, not evidence that Office updates generally break workflows.

Microsoft’s guidance is to weigh the severity of the issue against the security, performance, and reliability improvements in the latest update. A cosmetic change is different from a failure that blocks essential work. Before deciding, establish whether the problem is actually tied to an Office update, how broadly it affects work, and whether a documented fix or workaround exists.

Microsoft’s security release notes list updates by edition and update channel; the entry dated September 8, 2026, includes different version and build details by channel and edition. Do not treat one build number as the universal latest version. Check the current notes for your own product and platform: Microsoft 365 Apps and Office security updates. The notes cover Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise and business, Office 2019, Office LTSC 2021, Office 2021, Office LTSC 2024, and Office 2024. Office 2019 support ended October 14, 2025, though Microsoft says it may issue later updates at its discretion.

Check for a known issue before changing versions
A problem that appears after an update may instead involve an add-in, a single device, a service incident, or another cause. Check Microsoft’s recent issue listings before rolling back:
- Recent problems in Office lists known issues and fixes or workarounds.
- Recent Office installation or activation problems covers setup and activation issues. Microsoft’s page states it was last updated in July 2026.
If multiple people in your organization are affected, administrators can also check Service health in the Microsoft 365 admin center for tenant-wide service incidents. A service-side problem will not necessarily be fixed by changing the Office version.

How to check for Office updates on Windows
- Open an Office app. In Classic Outlook, the account area may be labeled Office Account.
- Choose File > Account (or File > Office Account in Classic Outlook).
- Select Update Options > Update Now, if those controls are available, and follow any prompts.
If Update Options is missing, the installation may be volume licensed or controlled by Group Policy. On a work or school device, follow your administrator’s update instructions or contact the help desk rather than trying to bypass its controls. Microsoft also points users to Microsoft Update where applicable. The available controls and delivery method can differ on managed installations. See Microsoft’s Office update instructions.
Should you roll back an Office update?
A rollback may remove a regression, but it can also remove improvements in security, performance, and reliability. Treat it as a temporary troubleshooting measure, not a routine way to keep updates away. Microsoft’s rollback instructions cover Click-to-Run installations of Microsoft 365, Office 2024, and Office 2021; they should not be assumed to apply to MSI installations.

Use severity and scope to decide
- Minor inconvenience: If the issue is cosmetic or has a workable alternative, check for a known issue and wait for a correction rather than accepting the security trade-off of an older version.
- Work slowed but possible: Check Microsoft’s listed workarounds, identify whether an add-in or one device is involved, and consult IT if the device is managed.
- Essential work blocked: Record the affected app, exact symptoms, when they began, and which devices or users are affected. Check Microsoft’s issue listings and involve IT. A rollback may be reasonable for a user-managed Click-to-Run installation if the disruption is severe, but understand that it removes the latest update’s benefits.
If you decide to revert
- Confirm the Office edition and installation type. Microsoft’s reversion procedure is for Click-to-Run, not MSI.
- Check Microsoft’s current instructions for the installed edition and follow them rather than applying a build number or command intended for a different channel.
- Keep a record of the issue and the version you returned to. Recheck for a corrected release and install it when the blocking problem is resolved; do not leave the older version in place indefinitely.
Microsoft’s guidance is to “weigh the severity of the issue that you’re experiencing against the benefits of having the security, performance, and reliability improvements that are included in the latest update.” Read its instructions for reverting to an earlier Office version before proceeding.

Macros blocked because a file came from the internet
Microsoft blocks VBA macros in files from the internet by default and displays a “Security Risk” message. Macros can be used to deliver malware or ransomware. On Windows, downloaded files may carry Mark of the Web metadata, which Office uses to assess their origin; some network or intranet files can also be affected if Office does not recognize their location as trusted.

- Convenient shortcut keys including Call mute, Snip & Sketch, Expressive input and Widget[2] for quick and easy access.

For a business-critical macro workflow, ask IT to verify the file and establish an approved approach. Microsoft recommends identifying essential files and working with business units and software vendors; signed code and trusted publishers may be part of that approach. Removing Mark of the Web or adding broad trusted locations can bypass protections and should not be casual fixes.
ActiveX controls disabled
Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 disable ActiveX controls by default. With them disabled, users cannot create new ActiveX objects or interact with existing ones. Microsoft advises leaving controls disabled unless absolutely necessary and warns about unexpected attachments or deceptive prompts asking you to enable them. A setting change affects Office applications broadly, not just the document in front of you. If a legitimate legacy workflow depends on ActiveX, involve your organization’s IT administrator. See Microsoft’s ActiveX guidance.
