It should present each change as a proposal: show what it would replace and where it would appear, let the applicant inspect and edit or reject it, and preserve the prior version. That interaction is a practical design inference from official guidance on meaningful engagement and substantive human review—not a UI pattern proven to improve hiring outcomes.
Why reviewable state matters
Resume suggestions can affect how an applicant describes skills, responsibilities, and achievements. A fluent sentence is not necessarily an accurate one. If generated language becomes part of a saved resume without a clear decision from the applicant, the person may not notice an invented claim, an altered meaning, or a change in voice.

UK government recruitment guidance says employees should be able to meaningfully engage with system outputs before acting on an AI-enabled prediction, decision, or recommendation. The guidance is about recruitment systems rather than a prescribed resume-builder interface, but it supports a useful product principle: make the recommendation understandable and actionable before it becomes a decision. The European Commission’s Article 50 FAQ describes human review as deliberate examination of content’s substance by people with relevant knowledge and professional judgment. It says superficial checks such as spell-checking or grammar correction do not count as human review in that legal context. A resume tool should therefore avoid implying that a person meaningfully reviewed generated content merely because they clicked through a spell-check or confirmation screen. Model each AI edit as a proposal, not a committed change
A reviewable edit needs its own identity and status rather than existing only as a transient suggestion on screen. One practical model is:
- Suggested: The system has prepared a change, but the resume remains untouched.
- In review: The applicant is inspecting the proposed wording and its context.
- Accepted, edited, or rejected: The applicant records a decision; an edited suggestion should preserve the applicant’s final wording as the decision.
For each proposal, retain a stable item identifier, the source section or destination, the current text, the proposed text, review status, and the applicant’s action. Keep the prior text available so the user can understand what changed and reverse an accepted edit if needed. This is a product-design recommendation based on the cited principles, not a regulatory interface specification or an empirically established best pattern.
What an applicant needs to see and do
Show the change in context
Display both the current wording and the proposed wording, and indicate the resume section and location affected. Let the applicant inspect the surrounding resume content, not just a sentence isolated in a popup. That makes it easier to judge whether a suggestion fits the applicant’s actual role, chronology, and voice.

Offer meaningful choices
Provide clear options to accept, edit, or reject a proposal. Do not make acceptance the only convenient path, and do not save generated wording as final content before the applicant has made a decision. The ability to modify a suggestion matters: applicants may want to keep its structure while changing a claim, tone, or detail.
Ask the applicant to verify factual claims
When an edit introduces or sharpens a claim about a skill, result, responsibility, or achievement, prompt the applicant to confirm that it reflects their experience. A system should not treat plausibility or a match to a job description as evidence that the claim is true. Preserve enough provenance for the person to understand that the wording was AI-generated and where it is intended to go.
Make the saved decision legible
After review, the saved resume and any export should reflect the applicant’s final decision, not an unreviewed draft. Keeping the prior text and the decision state available also makes the editing history understandable and supports recovery from accidental acceptance.
Tailor a resume without losing the applicant’s voice
Tailoring should help an applicant express relevant experience clearly, not turn a resume into a mirror of a job posting. A builder can propose a more specific description or highlight a relevant existing skill, but it should not insert keywords or achievements the applicant has not substantiated. The applicant should be able to see whether a suggestion preserves the intended meaning and sounds like a truthful account of their work.

Compare designs on whether the original and proposed wording are visible, whether people can edit or reject changes, whether the source and factual basis of claims are clear, whether review decisions persist and can be reversed, and whether the workflow is usable and accessible. These are design criteria inferred from the official engagement and review guidance; they should not be presented as proven predictors of hiring success.

A useful evaluation separates the usability of the review workflow from the quality of the resulting resume. The paper “ResumeGenAI: Supporting Job Seekers with LLM-Driven Resume Feedback,” published in the Proceedings of the 7th ACM Conference on Conversational User Interfaces in 2025, describes collecting user-experience measures and using standardized expert ratings of resumes. Its comparison condition included curated best-practice guidance, a manual comparison guide, a personalization checklist, resource materials, and save/export. It is an example of an evaluation approach, not evidence that a particular review-state design improves hiring outcomes. ResumeGenAI paper

In that study, 55.88% of participants (n=19) rated their resume-building skill as 3 on a 1–5 scale. This describes that study’s participants; it is not a population estimate for job seekers. The paper does not establish that a specific review interface raises resume quality, trust, interview invitations, or job offers.
What the AI Act timing does—and does not—mean
The European Commission says Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026 and has published guidelines for providers and deployers. Whether a particular resume builder is covered, and what obligations apply, depends on the system and its context; the title “AI resume builder” alone is not enough to determine its legal status. Treat the interface recommendations here as product-design guidance, not legal advice. European Commission guidelines for providers and deployers
