If Office for Mac won’t activate, first check that you’re signed in with the account that owns the license. Then use the exact message or error code to choose the next step: account or license checks, Keychain troubleshooting, an Office update, or a device-activation fix. Reinstalling is not the right first move for most activation problems.
Check the account and license before changing your Mac
Office activates against the license associated with the account you use to sign in. A personal Microsoft account, a work account, and a school account can have different entitlements, even if you use the same email address in other contexts.

- Identify the license. Is Office included with a Microsoft 365 subscription, a one-time Office for Mac purchase, or an employer or school account?
- Sign in with the account that owns it. If Office is showing the wrong account, sign out and choose the licensed account. Microsoft’s Office for Mac activation instructions explain the sign-in flow.
- Check the account’s Services page. Confirm that the expected Office product appears there. Access to Office web apps alone does not establish a desktop Office license.
- For work or school accounts, ask the administrator to verify the assignment. If no desktop license is assigned, your organization’s administrator must resolve that; changing Mac settings will not add the entitlement.
Match the message to the fix
Use the error text or code as your branch point. Avoid resetting license files until you have checked whether the problem is an account mismatch, a managed license, or a specific error with its own remedy.
“No license found” or Outlook will not activate
Verify that the signed-in account is the one with the Office license. If you have more than one Microsoft account, switch to the account that owns the product. For an employer or school license, ask the administrator to confirm that the correct desktop license is assigned. If the message is specifically “Unknown Error 0x0” or “License Not Found,” use the separate guidance below.

“Keeps asking me to sign in,” “Authentication Expired,” or repeated Keychain prompts
These symptoms can involve macOS Keychain permissions, which Office uses to store sign-in credentials. Follow Microsoft’s steps for Office for Mac repeatedly requesting keychain access, rather than repeatedly entering your password. Office apps installed outside the default /Applications location can also be relevant to recurring sign-in prompts.
Error 0xD000000C
First confirm that the Mac has network access and quit all Office apps. Microsoft’s 0xD000000C instructions include removing Office license files and activating again. A network-managed Mac account with a read-only Keychain may be unable to save credentials; if that applies, try activation from a local Mac account. Have the licensed account credentials ready before using the license removal tool.

Error 0x8A010101
Check that you are using the account associated with the license and a compatible Office version. Microsoft also warns that a product key purchased outside Microsoft or an official partner may be invalid, and MSDN keys do not activate a retail Office suite. See Microsoft’s 0x8A010101 guidance.

Error 0xD0001043
Microsoft’s troubleshooting index describes this as a server issue. Restart the Mac first. If the error persists, follow the removal and reinstallation steps listed in Microsoft’s Office for Mac activation troubleshooting.

Error 0xD000001c
Microsoft identifies invalid characters in the Mac’s computer name as a possible cause. Rename the Mac to remove those characters, then restart it and try activation again. Microsoft lists this code in its Office for Mac troubleshooting guidance.
“Unknown Error 0x0” or “License Not Found”
For this specific known issue, Microsoft’s notice last updated July 15, 2026 says to use macOS 12 or later and update Office through the channel used to install it. For Office downloaded from microsoft.com, use Microsoft AutoUpdate; for apps installed from the Mac App Store, update them through the App Store. These directions apply to this issue, not as a universal macOS requirement for every Office version or activation error. See Microsoft’s known-issue notice.

“Installation limit reached”
This message points to an activation or license limit, not a damaged installation. A one-time Mac Office license and a Microsoft 365 subscription do not have identical activation rights. Review the installation-limit guidance and manage eligible device installations or check the terms for your license. Reinstalling Office does not create additional activations.

Use Microsoft’s Office for Mac License Removal Tool instructions when the applicable troubleshooting path calls for a license reset, such as the 0xD000000C steps. Microsoft says the tool completely removes all Office for Mac licenses, so this is more than clearing a harmless cache.

- Quit every Office app.
- Run the official license removal tool using Microsoft’s instructions.
- Open an Office app and sign in with the account that owns the license. If prompted to choose among multiple licenses, select the intended one; Microsoft generally recommends choosing the subscription when you own both a subscription and a one-time license and want subscription benefits.
Get the right help if activation still fails
Contact Microsoft Support, or your organization’s IT administrator for a managed work or school account. Provide the details that distinguish one fix from another:
- The exact error text and code
- Your Office version and macOS version
- Whether Office came from microsoft.com or the Mac App Store
- The license type and the account used to sign in
- Whether you use a local Mac account or a network-managed account
