There is no proven all-purpose winner. Microsoft reports that MAI-Transcribe-1 beat Whisper-large-V3 on its FLEURS evaluation, but that does not establish which model is more accurate on your recordings. The speed figures also use different baselines: MAI-Transcribe-1’s batch result is compared with Microsoft Azure Fast, while Microsoft’s newer MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming has separate real-time claims. Choose by task and test both systems on the same representative audio.
Which models are being compared?
“MAI” and “Whisper” do not each refer to one interchangeable service configuration. The most useful comparison separates Microsoft’s file-oriented MAI-Transcribe-1 from its newer streaming model, and distinguishes OpenAI’s original Whisper model from later OpenAI transcription models.

| Model | What the official description establishes | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft MAI-Transcribe-1 | Microsoft announced it on April 2, 2026, as a multilingual speech-to-text model supporting 25 languages. Microsoft says it is available in Microsoft Foundry public preview and describes use with recordings, captions, dictation, and other transcription workflows. Microsoft’s announcement and model card provide the details. | These are Microsoft’s product and capability descriptions; they do not demonstrate that it performs best on every language or recording type. |
| OpenAI Whisper | OpenAI’s original description covers multilingual transcription, language identification, and translation of speech into English. It describes an encoder-decoder Transformer that processes audio in 30-second chunks. OpenAI’s Whisper introduction describes that model. | The original Whisper description should not be treated as a specification for every later OpenAI model or every hosted transcription route. |
| Microsoft MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming | Announced October 1, 2026, as a separate real-time transcription model supporting 60 languages, with first partial hypotheses just over 100 ms after audio arrives, according to Microsoft. Microsoft’s announcement gives its claims. | This is not MAI-Transcribe-1, and the announcement’s claims do not provide a matched Whisper comparison. |
| OpenAI GPT-4o-transcribe and GPT-4o-mini-transcribe | OpenAI’s later announcement says these models improve on original Whisper models in word error rate and language recognition. OpenAI’s audio-model announcement discusses them. | They are separate models, not simply another name for original Whisper. Include them only when evaluating those specific models. |
Does MAI-Transcribe-1 beat Whisper on accuracy?
Microsoft reports that MAI-Transcribe-1 had the lowest word error rate (WER) among the competitors it evaluated on FLEURS across 25 languages, naming Whisper-large-V3 among them. That supports a limited conclusion: Microsoft reports that MAI-Transcribe-1 outperformed Whisper-large-V3 on its FLEURS evaluation. It is not evidence of a universal ranking across every language, accent, microphone, or use case. The relevant claims appear in Microsoft’s announcement and model card.
OpenAI’s original Whisper introduction reports 50% fewer errors than the models it compared in its own broad zero-shot evaluation across diverse datasets. OpenAI also notes that Whisper did not beat models specialized for LibriSpeech. That result has a different test scope from Microsoft’s FLEURS result; the two percentages and rankings cannot be combined into a direct contest. OpenAI’s evaluation description explains the scope of its claim.

The official material cited here does not establish an independent, controlled test of MAI-Transcribe-1 and a specified Whisper model on the same audio, with the same languages, reference transcripts, scoring pipeline, and serving conditions. If accuracy matters for a deployment decision, run a matched evaluation on your own recordings.
Build a useful accuracy test
- Use the same audio clips and reference transcripts for both systems, including the languages and accents your users actually speak.
- Include realistic microphone quality, background noise, overlapping speakers, technical vocabulary, and recording lengths.
- Score WER where a reference transcript is appropriate, but also inspect task-specific errors such as missed names, punctuation that affects meaning, or errors in captions.
- Have people review the transcripts. A single aggregate score can hide a serious failure on a key language or recording condition.
Which one is faster?
It depends on whether “faster” means processing a prerecorded file or showing words while someone is speaking. Those are different workloads, and the published figures do not form a matched MAI-versus-Whisper speed test.

| Speed measure | Published figure | What it compares |
|---|---|---|
| MAI-Transcribe-1 batch throughput | Microsoft says it runs 2.5 times faster than its Azure Fast offering. | Microsoft’s batch model versus Microsoft Azure Fast—not versus Whisper. Microsoft’s announcement. |
| MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming partial-result latency | Microsoft says first partial hypotheses appear just over 100 ms after audio arrives. | A vendor-reported streaming figure for the newer MAI model, not a measured comparison with Whisper. Microsoft’s announcement. |
| MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming word-display speed | Microsoft says its internal evaluations showed words appearing twice as fast as its “closest competitor” for real-time dictation or subtitling. | The announcement does not identify the competitor in that claim or establish that it was Whisper under matched conditions. Microsoft’s announcement. |
For your own comparison, measure batch throughput as audio processed per unit of wall-clock time, and measure streaming latency as time to partial and stable final text. Include network and endpoint delays when they are part of the service you plan to use. Do not compare a batch-throughput claim with a streaming-latency figure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich model fits the job?
Choose around prerecorded files or live audio
For an archive of meetings, podcasts, interviews, or recorded calls, start with file-transcription support, throughput, output requirements, and the size and volume of your files. For captions or dictation that must appear while a person is speaking, prioritize a documented streaming route and measure partial and final transcript latency. Microsoft describes MAI-Transcribe-1 for batch-oriented use cases and announced MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming separately for real-time use; do not assume one model’s figures or capabilities apply to the other.

Platform workflow can matter as much as the model. Microsoft Learn’s Azure documentation describes the Azure OpenAI transcription-model route as a file workflow rather than the real-time model route in that documented offering. It gives a 25 MB upload limit for Azure OpenAI transcription and describes Azure Speech batch transcription as an option for larger files or batches, diarization, and word-level timestamps. These are constraints and options for the documented Azure workflow, not universal limits on every way of running Whisper. See Microsoft Learn’s transcription overview.
Check language and output needs
MAI-Transcribe-1’s published support is 25 languages; the newer streaming announcement describes 60. Whisper’s original description includes multilingual transcription and translation to English, as well as language identification. Verify the specific model’s current language coverage for your use case rather than inferring it from a family name. Also confirm whether you need original-language text or English translation, timestamps, diarization, captions, or another structured output; support can depend on the model and platform route.

How to choose without assuming a universal winner
- Name the exact models and route. Decide whether you are evaluating MAI-Transcribe-1, MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming, original Whisper, or a later OpenAI transcription model, and identify how each will be served.
- Separate the workload. Label it batch or streaming, and define whether the result must be a transcript, English translation, caption stream, timestamped text, or diarized output.
- Run the same representative audio through each candidate. Score transcription quality and review meaningful errors, with language and recording conditions recorded.
- Measure the relevant speed. For files, measure throughput; for live input, measure partial and final-result latency through the service path you intend to use.
- Calculate deployment cost and verify availability. Use current platform terms and prices for your expected volume, then account for integration and human correction where relevant.
On the evidence available from the cited official descriptions, MAI-Transcribe-1 has a favorable Microsoft-reported FLEURS result against named competitors including Whisper-large-V3, while Whisper’s original appeal includes multilingual transcription and English translation. Neither conclusion settles every workload. A representative, same-audio evaluation is the sound basis for choosing.
