Developers can access it in Microsoft Foundry Public Preview; Microsoft also offers a faster variant, MAI-Image-2.6-Flash, for latency-sensitive, high-throughput workloads.
What is MAI-Image-2.6?
MAI-Image-2.6 is Microsoft’s current in-house image model. Microsoft describes it as a tool for creating and editing design-ready images, with control over composition, style and detail. It can draw on text prompts, images, visual references and current web content or documents.

Microsoft said on its August 10, 2026 launch announcement that MAI-Image-2.6 reached No. 2 on Arena’s text-to-image leaderboard, improving 79 Elo over MAI-Image-2.5 overall and 91 Elo in text rendering. What can the model do?
Generate and edit images
You can describe an image to create, or provide an existing image and ask for changes. Microsoft says the model is designed to give creators control over details such as composition and style.

Work with multiple references
MAI-Image-2.6 supports multi-image reference editing. Microsoft says this can bring together elements such as people, products, styles and scenes from more than one image.
Use web context
Web grounding lets the model draw on current web content and documents when producing an image. This can provide relevant context, but it does not by itself establish that generated details are accurate or suitable for publication; review the output before using it.

Set aspect ratio and resolution
Microsoft says the latest models support dynamic aspect ratios and outputs up to 1.5K resolution. The announcement does not specify every available aspect-ratio preset or the exact pixel dimensions for each configuration. Microsoft’s developer announcement
How do you use Microsoft’s new image model?
- For a hands-on trial: open MAI Playground and select the available model. Microsoft directs users there to try its image models. Microsoft’s launch announcement
- For developer access: use Microsoft Foundry Public Preview to work with MAI-Image-2.6 or MAI-Image-2.6-Flash. Microsoft announced developer availability on September 4, 2026. Microsoft’s developer announcement
- Provide a prompt and, if useful, reference images: describe the desired image or edit, including the composition, style and details you want. For reference workflows, supply the images whose people, products, styles or scenes should inform the result.
- Choose the variant: use MAI-Image-2.6 when maximum quality and control are the priority; consider Flash when production speed and throughput matter more.
- Review and refine: inspect the generated image, then adjust the prompt or references. Check any text, factual details and usage rights before publishing or using the result commercially.
Microsoft describes Foundry access as Public Preview. The cited announcements do not specify pricing, geographic availability, account requirements or a complete set of API configuration steps, so check the current Playground or Foundry listing for those details.

The speed and efficiency figures are Microsoft’s claims, announced September 4, 2026. They should not be treated as universal results across hardware, prompts or production setups.
How does it compare with GPT image tools?
The available figures offer only a limited comparison. Microsoft’s reported Flash speed figure is against GPT-Image-2-Medium, while its leaderboard placement and Elo gains refer to Arena’s text-to-image rankings. Those measures do not establish that MAI-Image-2.6 is better overall than other image generators.

A useful evaluation should compare the same prompts and workflow in both tools, looking at image quality and text rendering, editing and multi-reference control, latency and throughput, supported resolutions and aspect ratios, web grounding, benchmark methodology, availability, pricing and regional access. Microsoft’s announcements do not provide a complete side-by-side comparison across those factors.

MAI-Image-2.6 follows MAI-Image-1, Microsoft’s first custom image model. In November 2025, Microsoft reported that MAI-Image-1 was available in Bing Image Creator and Copilot Audio Expressions, with regional limitations at that time.
