To change a question type in Microsoft Forms, open the form and check whether the question’s current editor offers a type selector. If it does not, add a new question of the desired type and configure it; before deleting the old question, remember that Microsoft says deletion permanently removes its collected responses.
Microsoft’s guidance explains how to add and edit questions but does not clearly document a general in-place conversion command for every question. Use the current editor, review the response-data consequences, and preview the form before sharing it.
Choose a route before changing the question
| Route | What to check | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Use an in-place type selector | Select the question and inspect its current editing controls. | Microsoft’s reviewed guidance does not establish that a selector is available for every question or that conversion preserves response history. |
| Add a question of the desired type | Choose Add new or Add new question, then select a type. | You may need to recreate wording and type-specific settings. Deleting the old question permanently deletes its collected responses. |
How to change a question type
- Open the form you want to edit in Microsoft Forms.
- Select the existing question and inspect its editing controls for a type selector. Microsoft’s documentation does not confirm a universal in-place conversion command, so check the options available in your current editor.
- If there is no suitable selector, choose Add new or Add new question, then select the type you need.
- Enter the question wording and configure the new question’s available options, such as choices, required status, or long-answer settings.
- Preview the form on a computer or mobile device to check how the revised question appears and works.
- Before deleting the original question, consider whether you need its collected response data. Microsoft warns that deleting a question permanently deletes those responses.
Question types and file-upload limits
Microsoft lists Choice, Text, Rating, Date, Ranking, Likert, File upload, and Net Promoter Score as question types. Section is available for organizing a form into parts. The type you choose determines which settings you can configure.
File-upload questions have an additional restriction: the form must accept responses from Only people in my organization or Specific people in my organization. Microsoft also documents a restriction involving personal forms when Microsoft Information Barrier is enabled; check your organization’s policy and the current audience setting before choosing File upload.

Check responses before replacing a question
Replacing a question can affect the form’s existing response history if you delete the original. Microsoft states that deleting a question permanently removes its collected responses. If those responses matter, do not delete the question until you have considered whether you need to retain them. The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not settle whether an in-place type change preserves response history.
