Microsoft Fabric is a SaaS analytics platform built around shared OneLake storage and integrated workloads; Azure Databricks is an open analytics platform for data engineering, analytics, machine learning, and AI that integrates with storage and security in your Azure account. Neither is the universal winner. Choose by workload mix, existing data estate, team skills, governance needs, and the cost and concurrency behavior you can validate for your configuration.

How to choose for your workload
Choose Fabric when an integrated OneLake foundation is a priority
Fabric is a strong candidate to evaluate if your goal is to bring analytics workloads onto a SaaS platform where data and items can be used across workloads through OneLake. That shared foundation may matter when reducing duplication and coordinating analytics experiences are central requirements. It is an architectural fit, not proof of lower cost or better performance.
Choose Azure Databricks when its open analytics platform fits your engineering and AI work
Azure Databricks is worth evaluating when your work spans data engineering, analytics, machine learning, or AI and you want a platform integrated with storage and security in your Azure account. Microsoft’s feature descriptions explain the product scope, but do not show that it is faster, cheaper, or more capable for your specific workload than Fabric.
Compare the actual mix, not just a headline feature
List the work that must run: data engineering and Spark, SQL warehousing, BI, streaming, machine learning, and AI. Then identify which teams will build and operate it, where data currently lives, how users need to share it, and what concurrency looks like. A platform that covers one workload well may not be the best fit for the whole estate, and documented integration does not make every workload interchangeable.

What OneLake and Databricks integration mean
Microsoft describes OneLake as shared across Fabric workloads and says Fabric can mirror data from Azure Databricks and other sources into OneLake. This can support an evaluation where a team wants Fabric’s shared data foundation while retaining connections to an existing estate. Mirroring or integration alone does not establish that Databricks workloads, behavior, or features can be replaced one-for-one by native Fabric experiences. Microsoft Fabric overview
Before treating mirroring as a migration plan, map the source data, transformations, permissions, downstream consumers, and operational responsibilities. Confirm which parts are mirrored and which continue to execute in the original platform; the product overview does not establish that all workloads are portable.

If you choose Fabric, select Lakehouse or Warehouse by the work
Microsoft’s Lakehouse-versus-Warehouse guidance helps with an internal Fabric decision; it is not a recommendation of Fabric over Azure Databricks.
Use Lakehouse for Apache Spark development
Microsoft’s Fabric decision guide states: “Apache Spark (Python, Scala, Spark SQL, or R): Use Lakehouse.” The guide also points to Lakehouse when data is unstructured, structured, or uncertain in type. Microsoft Fabric decision guide: Lakehouse or Warehouse

Use Warehouse for T-SQL and multi-table transactions
The same guide recommends Warehouse for T-SQL development and when full multi-table transactions are needed. These recommendations distinguish Fabric experiences; they do not compare their performance with Databricks. Microsoft Fabric decision guide: Lakehouse or Warehouse
Compare cost, capacity, and concurrency with your own workload
Fabric cost planning includes capacity consumption and OneLake storage, with applicable capacity overage and opt-in Spark autoscale billing. Under Spark autoscale billing, Microsoft says a base Fabric capacity is still required for non-Spark workloads and OneLake. Rates and availability can vary by region and change, so use the current pricing page for your location and configuration rather than relying on a generic estimate. Microsoft Fabric pricing

Microsoft’s architecture guidance warns that Fabric workloads can share capacity and compete for compute resources. Include concurrent queries, pipelines, workload mix, and any isolation needs in a capacity evaluation. This documented Fabric consideration should not be assumed to describe Azure Databricks cost or resource behavior. Microsoft Fabric capacity and licensing guidance
The reviewed sources do not provide a matched price or performance test for Fabric and Azure Databricks. To decide which is cheaper or faster for your organization, compare current regional prices and run representative tests with the same data, workload, concurrency, and success criteria. Treat any result as specific to the tested configuration, not a universal ranking.

A practical evaluation checklist
- Inventory the workload. Separate Spark engineering, SQL warehousing, BI, streaming, machine learning, and AI requirements.
- Map the data estate. Record where data is stored today and whether a shared OneLake foundation or documented mirroring would solve a real problem.
- Check governance and sharing. Define who needs access, how data is shared, and what controls your teams must operate.
- Match tools to people. Compare the development interfaces and languages your teams use with the work they need to deliver.
- Model capacity and storage. For Fabric, include shared capacity, OneLake storage, relevant overage, and any Spark autoscale billing in the estimate. Compare with current Azure Databricks pricing for the same region and workload rather than assuming an equivalent cost model.
- Test operational fit. Measure representative jobs and queries under realistic concurrency, then account for migration, integration, and ongoing operations.
Bottom line: decide by fit, then verify with a workload test
Evaluate Fabric first when shared OneLake and an integrated SaaS analytics platform align with your data estate and operating model. Evaluate Azure Databricks when its open platform and Azure-account integration align with your engineering, analytics, machine-learning, or AI work. Make the final decision using your own workload, regional cost estimates, concurrency requirements, and representative tests; the available documentation does not establish a universal winner.
