Microsoft Fabric IQ: How AI Agents Get Shared Business Context

Fabric IQ connects unified data, curated analytics, and business ontologies so AI agents can work with shared definitions and relationships. Availability and governance requirements vary by integration.

Microsoft Fabric IQ gives AI agents a governed way to work with shared business definitions, metrics, and relationships—not a way to independently learn how a company operates. It connects an organization’s data to concepts such as customer, revenue, and shipment so an agent can answer in business terms rather than infer meaning from disconnected tables.

What Fabric IQ adds to an AI agent

Raw data does not explain itself. A field called revenue might mean booked sales, recognized revenue, or something else; “customer” may refer to a billing account or an individual buyer. An agent needs those definitions, along with relationships and rules, to interpret a question consistently.

Microsoft describes Fabric IQ as providing “context on the state of your business.” It is part of Microsoft IQ, alongside Work IQ for employee and work context, Foundry IQ for organizational policies and authoritative documents, and Web IQ for web context. Fabric IQ’s focus is business entities and data. Microsoft Learn: What is Fabric IQ?

For example, answering “Which customers placed orders above $10,000 last quarter?” requires identifying the relevant customer definition, order data, threshold, and quarter. A shared business foundation can make those assumptions explicit. It can help ground an answer, but it does not by itself prove the answer is correct or ensure that an agent will make a sound decision.

How its data, analytics, and ontology layers fit together

Fabric IQ brings together three related layers. OneLake unifies data, Power BI semantic models organize curated analytics, and ontologies describe business concepts and how they relate to one another. Microsoft Learn: What is Fabric IQ?

Layer What it contributes Example
Unified data OneLake brings data together across sources. Order, customer, and shipment records from different systems.
Business intelligence Power BI semantic models provide curated measures, dimensions, and hierarchies. A defined revenue measure or a sales hierarchy.
Operational intelligence Ontologies represent entities, properties, relationships, rules, and metrics, and bind those concepts to live enterprise data. A customer entity linked to orders, with a defined relationship between them.

Semantic model versus ontology

A semantic model is primarily an analytics layer: it defines trusted measures and organizes data for business intelligence. An ontology represents business concepts and their relationships in a form that can support operational reasoning. The roles overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Microsoft says ontologies can be generated or aligned from existing Power BI semantic models, carrying established definitions into agent experiences. Microsoft Learn: What is Fabric IQ?

Microsoft also describes ontology rules expressed in natural language and metrics that can carry source-owned Power BI DAX measures. Its documentation says organizations can create ontologies from scratch, generate them from semantic models, or import using standards such as RDF or OWL. A built-in graph model can support questions centered on relationships. An ontology agent can help draft definitions and bindings and propose changes for review. These are described product capabilities; an organization still has to implement and validate them.

Where Fabric IQ is available—and where status differs

“Fabric IQ integration” does not have one release status across Microsoft products. The announcements and documentation cited here distinguish generally available experiences from a preview connection:

Integration with the new Code experience Forthcoming through the Frontier program as of September 28, 2026. The September announcement did not describe this integration as generally available. Microsoft Azure Blog, September 28, 2026

Release labels can change. Check the documentation for the specific product and deployment before planning around a capability; availability in Copilot Chat or Cowork does not establish that a separate Foundry connection is generally available.

Governance, identity, licensing, and data boundaries

Business context is useful only within the access rules and data-handling boundaries an organization intends to apply. Microsoft’s Foundry connection guide says requests use the identity configured for the connection and honor Fabric permissions and governance policies. That makes the configured identity and its permissions important parts of the design, not administrative details to leave until deployment.

Prerequisites and capacity

The Foundry guide lists an eligible Microsoft Fabric license for users invoking Fabric IQ. For a published Fabric data agent, it specifies paid F2-or-higher Fabric capacity or Power BI Premium P1-or-higher capacity with Fabric enabled. Licensing terms may change, so confirm requirements for the precise integration and tenant before implementation. Microsoft Learn: Connect Foundry Agent Service agents to Fabric IQ

Data handling and validation

Microsoft warns that using the Foundry connection may incur costs and that data may leave the Azure compliance boundary and be processed under applicable service terms and data-handling policies. Builders are responsible for assessing data flows, geographic and compliance boundaries, permissions, and approvals. The guide also calls for application testing of quality, reliability, security, and trustworthiness, with appropriate responsible-AI mitigations. How to evaluate whether it fits your agent project

Before choosing a Fabric IQ path, identify what context the agent needs and which integration will supply it. Then validate the definitions, access model, release status, and data flow for that exact deployment.

  1. Name the context. Decide whether the task depends on business data, employee work context, organizational knowledge, or web information; those are distinct Microsoft IQ areas.
  2. Choose the right business layer. Use semantic models for curated analytics and KPIs; consider an ontology when the task depends on entities, relationships, rules, or operational concepts.
  3. Verify the exact integration’s status. Distinguish generally available Copilot or Operations Agent features from the Foundry connection, which the cited guide labels preview.
  4. Check identity and capacity. Confirm which identity makes requests, what that identity can access, and whether the necessary license and capacity are in place.
  5. Review data boundaries and test the application. Assess where data is processed, obtain required approvals, and test the agent’s behavior and safeguards before relying on it.

Microsoft’s stated rationale is that agents need shared business understanding to reason, coordinate, and act. Fabric IQ is an attempt to provide that foundation; the available documentation describes product design and release status, not independent proof of improved accuracy, return on investment, or business outcomes in customer deployments.
