Neither Microsoft Edge nor Google Chrome is a proven all-around winner. Both use Chromium, so the practical choice comes down to the account ecosystem, built-in tools, privacy settings, extensions, and how each performs on your own devices. The available evidence documents Edge’s features but does not establish that it is faster, lighter, or more private than Chrome.
Edge vs Chrome at a glance

Is Microsoft Edge based on Chrome?
Edge is based on Chromium, the open-source browser project that also underlies Chrome. Microsoft says Edge uses the same underlying technology as Chrome. That shared foundation suggests substantial compatibility overlap, but it does not mean every website, extension, or feature works identically in both browsers.
Which browser should you choose?
Choose based on your account ecosystem
If your devices and services are already organized around a Microsoft account, Edge’s documented sync may be convenient. Microsoft says Edge can sync favorites, passwords, and other information across devices when you sign in and turn on the relevant data types. Sync also means considering where that information goes: Microsoft says synced form-fill data, such as addresses and passwords, is sent to its cloud. Microsoft’s sync overview and privacy explanation describe these details.
The material available here does not provide a comparable, current Chrome sync specification, so it cannot establish which browser handles sync better. Check the settings and account terms for the browser you use before enabling synchronization.

Choose based on workflow features you will actually use
Edge includes documented tools such as Collections for organizing browsing and sleeping tabs for managing inactive tabs. These are reasons to try Edge if they suit your habits—not proof that it is better overall. Microsoft’s feature descriptions are vendor information, not independent comparisons of how useful the browsers are for every person.
Do not assume one is more private
The evidence here does not support an overall privacy winner. Compare which account is signed in, which data types are synced, the browser’s privacy controls, and the permissions requested by your extensions. Microsoft’s documentation describes Edge data handling and policy controls, but it is not a like-for-like, current privacy comparison with Chrome. Microsoft Edge policy documentation and its privacy documentation explain Edge-specific controls and disclosures.

Compare extensions one by one
Edge and Chrome share a Chromium foundation, but that does not guarantee identical extension availability or behavior. Microsoft says extension update requests can include identifying information and advises users to review the privacy policy of each extension’s developer. A familiar extension name is not a substitute for checking its permissions and data practices. Microsoft’s privacy whitepaper
Which browser uses less memory or runs faster?
The available evidence does not establish that Edge or Chrome is faster, uses less memory, or provides better battery life in a controlled comparison. Microsoft documents efficiency and memory-related controls for Edge and promotes sleeping tabs, but those feature descriptions are not an independent Edge-versus-Chrome benchmark. For example, Microsoft’s May 19, 2025 comparison page is vendor-authored.

If resource use is the deciding factor, compare both browsers on the same device under similar conditions:
- Use the same websites and number of open tabs.
- Install the same extensions, or disable extensions in both for a baseline.
- Keep power settings and other running applications consistent.
- Check memory use and battery behavior during the tasks you actually perform, rather than relying on a single idle reading.
This is a way to evaluate your own setup, not a benchmark result. Browser version, operating system, extensions, and workload can all affect what you observe.

Can you switch from Chrome to Edge without losing bookmarks and passwords?
Microsoft documents an import route from other browsers, so moving some browser data to Edge is possible. Its privacy whitepaper also says that if an extension is unavailable in the Edge Add-ons site, Edge can import a copy from Chrome and ask for permission before activating it. Importing is not a guarantee that every setting, item of data, or extension will transfer or behave exactly as it did in Chrome.
- Open Edge and use its browser-data import option to select Chrome as the source. The exact screen labels may vary by Edge version and platform.
- Select the data types Edge offers for import, then review the results in Edge before relying on them.
- For any imported extension, review its permissions and developer privacy policy. If Edge asks for permission before enabling it, decide whether to allow it.
- Check important bookmarks and saved credentials in Edge before removing or resetting Chrome.
Microsoft’s privacy whitepaper supports the extension-import and activation details; its switching guide covers Edge’s sync and transition features.

Quick Recap
How to make the decision
- Pick Edge if its Microsoft-account sync or tools such as Collections fit your routines.
- Pick Chrome if it better fits your existing account setup or the extensions and settings you depend on.
- If privacy is the deciding factor, compare the specific sync choices, account settings, and extensions you plan to use; the evidence here does not identify a winner.
- If speed, memory, or battery life matters most, test both on your own hardware with the same workload.
