Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Edge stopped opening your preferred page, first check which page changed: the one shown when Edge launches, the destination of the Home button, or the page opened in every new tab. These are separate settings. Microsoft’s guidance explains how to change each, but does not establish that routine Edge updates reset them. An update happening just before the change is not, by itself, proof of the cause.
Identify which Edge page changed
| What you see | Setting to check | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Edge opens the wrong page when you launch it | Startup behavior | When the browser starts |
| The Home button opens the wrong page | Home button and its URL | When you click the Home button |
| A new tab has the wrong layout or content | New-tab Page settings | Each time you open a new tab |
Microsoft groups these controls under Settings > Start, home, and new tabs, but they do different jobs. Its home-page instructions cover the Home button; startup behavior is configured separately, and new-tab appearance is adjusted from the Page settings gear.

Choose what opens when Edge starts
- In Edge, select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Open Start, home, and new tabs.
- Under the startup options, choose the behavior you want: open a new tab, continue where you left off, or open a specified page or pages.
Microsoft documents these startup choices in its Edge page settings guidance. If you choose specified pages, add the URL or URLs you want Edge to open. The browser’s startup choice does not set the Home button destination.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Set the Home button separately
- Go to Settings > Start, home, and new tabs.
- Turn on Show home button.
- Choose the New tab page or enter the web address you want the button to open.
Microsoft’s instructions apply to Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The Home button controls what happens when you click that button, not necessarily what opens when Edge starts.

Change what appears on new tabs
Open a new tab and select the Page settings gear to adjust its layout, background, and content. Those choices affect the new-tab page; they do not determine which site Edge opens at browser launch.
Why it may have changed after an update
Microsoft Support says, “By default, Microsoft Edge automatically updates when you restart your browser.” Its update guidance explains updating and restarting, but does not say routine updates reset startup preferences. Microsoft’s page-setting guidance treats startup, Home button, and new-tab controls separately. So an update may have coincided with the change, but the available official documentation does not confirm it caused the change.

The specific cause can depend on the device, Edge profile, and management settings. Without those details, it is more useful to check the affected control than to assume the update changed it.

Check whether your organization manages Edge
On a work or school device, an administrator may control browser settings. Microsoft Learn’s HomepageLocation policy documentation says that when this policy is enabled, users cannot change the Home button’s page URL. Microsoft separately documents startup policies, including options for a new tab, restoring the last session, or opening specified URLs, in its RestoreOnStartup policy reference.

If a setting is missing, disabled, or changes back on a managed device, contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to override its policy. Microsoft also advises users to contact their administrator when organization-managed settings are unavailable; see Microsoft’s update settings guidance.
Quick Recap
If the setting still will not stick
- Reopen Settings > Start, home, and new tabs and verify the specific startup or Home button choice you want.
- Check whether the device is managed if the control is unavailable or reverts after you change it.
- If the setting is available but Edge continues behaving unexpectedly, follow Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance to check for updates. On Windows, Microsoft also describes repairing Edge through Settings > Apps > Installed apps; it says repair should not affect browser data and settings.
