Microsoft Edge Is Improving How It Installs Updates: What Changes in 2026

Edge’s seamless-update technology is still a prototype, but users can already defer restarts until the device is idle. Here’s how to update Edge manually, what changes with the 2026 release cadence, and how IT teams can track security fixes.

Microsoft is testing a way for Edge to move to a new secure version without closing your open tabs or interrupting active work. That seamless-updates capability is still an early prototype, not a shipped Edge default. The feature available now is Restart to update on idle, which waits until your device is not being used, restarts Edge, installs the pending update and restores your tabs.

What Microsoft announced

In an October 15, 2026 Edge Blog announcement, Microsoft described a working prototype that could replace the browser version while Edge remains open. The design is intended to preserve tabs and ongoing work instead of forcing an immediate visible restart. Microsoft’s Rob Franco and Arunesh Chandra characterize it as “not in production code or part of Chromium today,” so it demonstrates a possible future rather than a generally available feature.

That distinction matters: the prototype should not be treated as a setting you can enable, an enterprise deployment option or a promise that every Edge installation will update without restarting.

How Edge installs updates today

Automatic checking and restart

Edge checks for updates automatically. When a package has downloaded, the browser applies it at the next restart. Depending on the device and update path, Edge may prompt you to restart, and your favorites, passwords and settings remain in place.

#1 Best Overall

Manual check from Edge

  1. Open Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
  2. Select Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge.
  3. Alternatively, enter edge://settings/help in the address bar.
  4. Let Edge download and install the available version, then restart when requested.

If Edge cannot complete the process through its settings page or Windows Update, Microsoft provides a direct installer. The direct-installer update retains favorites, passwords and settings.

Windows Update

Updates can also arrive through Windows Update. Organization policies may control whether Edge updates, suppress update controls or hide download options. Where Edge offers automatic downloading over a metered connection, enabling it can incur cellular or other metered-data charges.

What “Restart to update on idle” does

Microsoft’s current practical feature, formerly called Instant Updates, shifts the interruption rather than eliminating it. Edge waits for the device to be idle, relaunches the browser, applies the pending update and restores the tabs that were open. You still get a restart, but it is less likely to occur while you are typing, presenting or working in a critical web application.

This approach can also help security fixes reach users sooner because updates do not have to wait indefinitely for a convenient manual restart. It is different from the seamless prototype: the browser process is still relaunched, while the prototype aims to change versions while active tabs remain in place.

Edge’s release schedule from version 152

Beginning with Edge 152, which Microsoft lists for Stable on August 27, 2026, the Stable channel moves to a release every two weeks. Each Stable release is expected to contain about half as much new content as the former monthly releases. Microsoft says the result should be smaller, steadier changes while security and platform improvements arrive sooner.

Channel Release interval How updates are delivered
Stable Every two weeks, starting with Edge 152 Smaller change sets; major releases roll out progressively
Extended Stable Every eight weeks Receives every fourth Stable release, such as versions 156, 160 and 164

The Extended Stable channel is intended for organizations that need a slower change rate. Its eight-week interval means it receives every fourth Stable release rather than each two-week build.

Why some devices receive an update later

Major Stable updates use a progressive rollout over several days. Microsoft monitors release health and can limit the impact if a problem appears. Critical security fixes use a faster rollout cadence.

How IT teams can monitor Edge security updates

Microsoft’s Edge management service now includes Security Update Alerts for managed Windows devices, with no additional licensing required according to Microsoft. Administrators can set a minimum severity threshold and receive dashboard and email alerts when a release contains qualifying security fixes, including zero-day fixes.

The Monitoring dashboard can show:

  • Release severity.
  • Addressed CVE identifiers.
  • Managed Windows devices that may still need the update.
  • Available Edge versions by channel.

This gives an IT team a way to distinguish routine browser servicing from releases that need urgent validation or accelerated deployment.

Which update approach applies to you?

Approach Interruption Availability User or administrator control Typical scope
Seamless update prototype Aims to avoid a visible restart Early development; not production code or part of Chromium Not currently configurable Future Edge design
Restart to update on idle Restart occurs while the device is idle; tabs are restored Current Edge feature Automatic behavior managed by Edge and policy Individual and managed devices
Manual restart Interrupts work when you choose to restart Current update path You decide when to check and restart Individual devices and administrator-directed fleets

What Edge users should do

  1. Leave automatic updates enabled unless your organization manages Edge centrally.
  2. When you need to verify a version, open edge://settings/help and allow the check to finish.
  3. Restart promptly when a security update is ready, or let Restart to update on idle handle the relaunch.
  4. If settings and Windows Update cannot complete the installation, use Microsoft’s direct installer and confirm that Edge reopens with your tabs and saved settings.

The key expectation for 2026 is therefore incremental: Edge has a future-looking seamless-update prototype, an available idle-restart option today, a faster two-week Stable cadence from version 152, and stronger security-update visibility for managed Windows fleets.
