Proton’s Autumn/Winter 2026 Roadmap: What’s Coming to Mail, Drive, Pass, VPN and Lumo

By Freedom251 Team · · 6 min read

Proton’s autumn/winter 2026 roadmap, published October 15, covers the next six months across Mail, Drive, Pass, VPN and Lumo. The common goal is to make leaving large technology platforms less disruptive: easier migration, broader device support, more controlled sharing and embedded assistance. Some changes are already rolling out or released; others remain planned with no firm launch date.

Roadmap status at a glance

Service Primary focus Platforms or users affected Status on October 15, 2026
Proton Mail Mobile message search, Gmail connection and simpler account linking Android, iOS and business teams Mobile search rolling out; other items planned
Proton Drive Encrypted content search, Google Drive migration and wider desktop coverage Mobile, web, Linux and macOS Search and performance work ongoing; Linux and macOS features planned
Proton Pass Safer credential sharing, monitoring, autofill and administration Individuals, families and organizations Folders, URL matching and compromised-password alerts available; other items planned
Proton VPN Consistent design, stronger kill-switch behavior and timed pause/resume Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS/iPadOS and Android TV Design rollout and kill-switch work underway; timed pause/resume planned
Lumo Developer API, faster mobile apps and a desktop client Developers, businesses, iOS, Android and desktop users API releasing; app improvements and desktop app planned

The roadmap is a six-month plan rather than a promise that every item will arrive on a particular day. The only dates established in the announcement are the publication date and the availability notes for selected Pass features.

Proton Mail: mobile search and easier migration

Full-text search is coming to Android and iOS

Mail’s mobile content search is rolling out on Android and iOS. It is intended to search inside message content, not just subject lines or other visible metadata. Proton says the feature can work without the company reading inbox contents, preserving its zero-access approach to encrypted mail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rollout timing can vary by account and app version, so an option that is absent today does not necessarily indicate a configuration problem. The roadmap does not give a final completion date for all mobile users.

Gmail connection from the mobile app

Proton is making Gmail connection setup available inside the mobile application. Once connected, users can send and receive through their Gmail address and import recent messages. This is designed to reduce the friction of moving gradually instead of abandoning an existing address in one step.

Linking separate Proton accounts

People who created separate Proton accounts while first using VPN, Drive or Pass are also expected to get an easier way to link those accounts. The announcement does not specify the exact account-merging flow or a release date.

Free subdomains for business teams

Business teams will be able to use free Proton subdomains for sending and receiving mail without first configuring a registrar or DNS records. This is aimed at teams that need a working business address before undertaking a full domain setup. The feature is planned, not listed as generally available on October 15.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proton Drive: encrypted search, migration and platform coverage

Search beyond file names

Drive search is expanding on mobile and the web to cover more than file names. Proton is approaching this incrementally because end-to-end encryption makes content indexing and search technically difficult: the service must add useful discovery without gaining access to the plaintext inside files.

A simpler move from Google Drive

Proton is developing a migration path from Google Drive that avoids downloading everything locally and manually re-uploading it. The roadmap does not state whether the tool will preserve every permission, version history or shared-link setting, so organizations should not assume a perfect one-to-one transfer until those details are published.

Shared-drive performance

In its spring/summer 2026 roadmap, Proton reported that downloading shared files was 70% faster and uploading to a shared folder was 30% faster. Those are Proton’s reported improvements for that roadmap period, not an independent benchmark or a guaranteed speed for every connection and file type.

Linux and macOS clients

A Linux beta is in development. Proton says the initial launch will likely consist only of a headless sync daemon, meaning users should expect a background service rather than a complete graphical desktop application at first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On macOS, selectable-folder sync is planned to match the behavior already available on Windows. The roadmap does not provide a release date for either the Linux beta or macOS folder selection.

Proton Pass: sharing credentials without exposing passwords

Safer sharing and expiration

Pass is planning a sharing method in which a recipient can sign in to use a shared item without being shown the underlying password. Shared items and vaults are also expected to support expiration, giving owners a way to limit access after a project or engagement ends.

Pass Monitor v2

The planned second version of Pass Monitor is intended to alert users to weak, reused and compromised passwords, as well as email addresses found in breaches. The roadmap does not state whether every alert will be available on every plan.

Features already listed as available

Proton’s updates index lists folders, URL matching and compromised-password alerts as available on October 15, 2026. Those should be treated as released updates, unlike the other Pass items described as planned in the roadmap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organization and autofill work

Further Pass work includes shared subfolders, deeper autofill support on macOS and Android, credential exchange, and more granular policies for users and groups. Business administration is also slated to gain vault transfer during employee off-boarding and a consolidated admin console. No launch dates are given for these capabilities.

Proton VPN: consistent apps and more dependable interruption handling

One design across platforms

Proton is rolling out a consistent app design to Linux, macOS, iOS/iPadOS and Android TV, following an earlier Windows redesign. A unified interface should reduce the learning curve when switching devices, although the roadmap does not claim feature parity at every stage of the rollout.

Kill-switch improvements

Kill-switch behavior is being improved across platforms so traffic is less likely to escape when the VPN tunnel drops. An advanced kill switch is specifically planned for macOS. The announcement does not define the exact policy differences between the standard and advanced modes.

Timed pause and resume

Timed pause and automatic resume are planned first for Windows and Android. Users will be able to choose an interval during which the VPN is paused, after which the app reconnects automatically. This is useful for captive portals, banking sites or other short-lived exceptions, but it is not yet presented as a general release.

Lumo: an API, better mobile apps and a desktop client

Lumo API

Proton is releasing a Lumo API for developers and businesses to embed the assistant in their own products and workflows. Proton says the API will carry the same zero-access encryption and no-logging protections described for the Lumo app. The announcement does not list pricing, rate limits, supported models or a general availability schedule.

  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Mobile reliability and desktop plans

Faster, more reliable Lumo apps for iOS and Android are planned, along with a dedicated desktop application. The roadmap does not identify the desktop operating systems or provide a release date.

What the roadmap means for people switching services

The individual announcements fit a single migration strategy. Mail’s Gmail connection and recent-message import support a gradual address transition. Drive’s proposed transfer tool targets the most labor-intensive part of moving cloud storage, while Linux support and selectable macOS folders address users who cannot rely on a Windows-only desktop workflow.

Privacy remains a design constraint rather than a marketing footnote. Mail content search and Drive content search must be built around encrypted data, which explains why both are rolling out incrementally instead of appearing as unrestricted server-side indexing. Pass’s planned sharing controls focus on limiting what recipients can see and how long they retain access. Lumo’s API extends the same stated zero-access and no-logging protections beyond the first-party app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For now, users should separate three categories when planning a switch: features already released, features rolling out gradually, and roadmap intentions without dates. The October 15 updates index confirms the released Pass items; the remaining changes should be treated as planned until Proton announces availability for the relevant platform or account.

The Bottom Line

Proton’s 2026 roadmap is mainly about reducing the practical cost of leaving Big Tech: mobile Mail search and Gmail bridging, easier Drive migration and broader desktop support, password sharing with tighter controls, more consistent VPN behavior, and a Lumo API. Several items are still undated plans, so adoption decisions should be based on the features available for your platform today rather than on roadmap promises alone.
