Microsoft Edge adds extension store for Android before Chrome

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Edge is rolling out an extension store for Android, giving you a place to install add-ons directly inside Edge on your phone or tablet. If you’ve used desktop Edge for years, this closes a long-standing gap in the Android experience.

The timing is the part that’s getting attention: Edge is moving extension browsing and installation to Android before Chrome, which has historically been more restrictive about where and how extensions land on mobile.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This guide focuses on what to expect, how to install and manage extensions in Edge on Android, and what to do when the store or a specific extension doesn’t show up.

What it means that Microsoft Edge added an extension store for Android

An extension store means you can browse and install extensions without jumping through side-loading or relying on a desktop workflow. For many users, it’s the difference between “I can do this on my laptop” and “I can do it on my phone, too.”

On Android, the practical impact is straightforward:

  • You get a curated catalog of extensions that are meant to work with Edge’s mobile runtime.
  • You can manage permissions and extension behavior from within Edge, not just in browser settings on desktop.
  • There’s a clearer path to updates—extensions can update themselves through the store flow.

Edge vs Chrome on Android: what’s different

Both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome are Chromium-based on Android, but their mobile extension ecosystems haven’t matched each other in the same way as desktop.

Here’s the core comparison that matters for real-world use:

Feature Microsoft Edge (Android) Chrome (Android)
Extension store availability on Android Yes, via an Edge extension store flow Typically more limited depending on rollout and device, with fewer on-device install paths
Installation experience In-browser browsing and install Often requires different approaches and may not be as consistent across devices
Management UI Dedicated place in Edge settings for extensions Management exists, but install/support is not as uniform for all Android users
Compatibility expectations Extensions are expected to be mobile-compatible for Edge Even compatible desktop extensions may not behave the same on Android

If you’ve been waiting for mobile extensions to feel “first-class,” this Edge change is the kind that tends to stick: it reduces friction and puts the decision directly in the browser.

Prerequisites before you try extensions on Edge for Android

Before anything else, make sure you’re working with a version of Edge that includes the store features. Extensions on mobile depend on both the browser build and Android system components.

Hardware and OS basics

  • Android phone or tablet running a modern Android version (commonly Android 10+ for the smoothest experience).
  • Stable internet connection for installing and updating extensions.

Browser and signed-in state

  • Install Microsoft Edge from Google Play (not a sideloaded build).
  • Confirm you’re logged into a Microsoft account if Edge prompts for sync or store access.
  • Keep your Edge app updated. The store can be feature-flagged, so older versions may not show it.

Be aware of WebView dependency

Android apps that embed browsing capabilities can depend on Android System WebView. If WebView is out of date, you may see missing UI elements or extensions that never activate.

How to install extensions from the Microsoft Edge store on Android

The exact labels can vary slightly by Edge version, but the workflow is consistent: open Edge settings, find the extensions entry, browse, install, then check permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your Edge version and enable extension support

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Look for About Microsoft Edge (or App information) and confirm you’re on a recent version.
  4. If the extension store doesn’t appear, update Edge via Google Play and reopen the app.

If Edge uses feature flags, you may need to wait for your account/device to be included. Updating helps, but it doesn’t guarantee immediate availability.

Find the extension store inside Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll until you find Extensions (sometimes grouped under Apps or Browser apps).
  4. Select Extension store or Get extensions.

If you don’t see an Extensions entry, jump to the troubleshooting section later—this is usually a version or rollout issue.

Install an extension and verify permissions

  1. In the extension store, find an extension using search or categories.
  2. Tap the extension listing to open its details.
  3. Review the permissions section. On mobile, permissions tend to be more impactful than on desktop because they can affect page rendering and navigation behavior.
  4. Tap Add or Install.
  5. Confirm any prompts (account sign-in, device permissions, or browser prompts).

Once installed, Edge should show it under your managed extensions list.

Pin an extension and use it on a web page

Many extensions have an on-page action (icon in the toolbar, page action menu, or “…” menu). The placement varies by extension, but the general steps are the same:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open a website in Edge.
  2. Look for the extension icon in the toolbar, or open the browser menu (… or Extensions entry).
  3. Select the extension action.
  4. Confirm the extension reacts (e.g., a content blocker toggles, a translator launches, a reader mode change occurs).

Managing extensions: enable, disable, remove, and troubleshoot

Good extension hygiene matters. If an extension causes sluggish browsing, broken pages, or excessive pop-ups, disable it first—then narrow down the cause.

Where to manage extensions

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap Extensions.
  4. You should see a list of installed extensions with toggles for enable/disable.

How to disable an extension that misbehaves

  1. Open Settings > Extensions.
  2. Toggle the extension off.
  3. Close and reopen Edge to clear any in-memory state.
  4. Reload the problematic site.

If the problem disappears, you’ve confirmed the extension is involved.

How to remove an extension completely

  1. Settings > Extensions.
  2. Tap the extension name.
  3. Select Remove or Uninstall.
  4. Reload Edge.

Some extensions store local settings. Removing them typically clears extension-level data, but site-specific changes (like blocked elements) may remain until you refresh and permissions update.

Common permission-related issues

These are the issues you’ll run into most often on Android:

  • Extension never activates: check if it’s enabled and confirm site access permissions are allowed.
  • Broken page UI: disable the extension and reload the page. Content blockers and script-related extensions are common culprits.
  • Notifications/pop-ups too aggressive: review extension permissions and remove anything that looks suspicious.
  • Passwords or forms failing: ensure the extension has the correct permissions and try disabling it temporarily to test whether it’s the cause.

Which extensions work on Android (and which probably won’t)

Not every desktop extension behaves the same on mobile. Even if an extension is compatible with the store, the Android environment is different: smaller screens, different UI triggers, and a different lifecycle.

Extension capabilities that typically carry over

  • Content filtering (ad blockers, trackers blockers) when they rely on request filtering.
  • Page transformation (dark mode themes, reader enhancements) if the extension targets DOM elements reliably.
  • Developer tools in limited form, since full console access and debugging can be constrained.

Expectations for Chrome Web Store migration

Because both browsers are Chromium-based, many extensions are built with portability in mind. Still, the mobile store and runtime matter. If a Chrome Web Store extension doesn’t show equivalent listing on Edge Android, treat it as not supported in the mobile Edge context rather than something “hidden.”

If you’re trying to install a specific extension, prioritize listings explicitly marked for Edge Android in the store and review permission and version requirements in the extension details.

Step-by-step if the extension store doesn’t appear

When the store is missing, the cause is usually one of four things: Edge version too old, feature rollout not yet applied, Android WebView mismatch, or a stale cache/data state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update Edge from Google Play

  1. Open Google Play Store.
  2. Search Microsoft Edge.
  3. Tap Update if available.
  4. Open Edge and check Settings > Extensions.

Check Android WebView and system components

  1. Open Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Android System WebView and update it.
  3. Also update Google Chrome if WebView depends on its components on your device (many OEM builds do).
  4. Reopen Edge.

If WebView is severely out of date, Edge may still run but extension UI components can fail to load.

Clear Edge cache or browser data (carefully)

  1. Open Android Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Microsoft Edge.
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Choose Clear cache first.
  5. If it still doesn’t show, you can try Clear storage (this resets browser state and may remove local data).

If you care about favorites or passwords, consider syncing first via your Microsoft account.

Try a different network or sign-in state

  1. Switch from Wi‑Fi to mobile data, or vice versa.
  2. Sign out and back into your Microsoft account in Edge.
  3. Restart the app.
  4. Recheck Settings for Extensions.

Some enterprise or privacy settings can block store connectivity. If you’re on a managed device, talk to your admin—policies may be limiting extension access.

Alternatives if you still can’t install extensions

If your Edge Android install doesn’t show the store yet, you still have options. They won’t replace every extension, but they can cover the most common use cases like ad blocking, tracking prevention, and productivity features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use built-in Edge features

  • Tracking prevention modes for privacy control.
  • Collections for saving and organizing content.
  • Reading view style options where available to reduce distractions.
  • Search and form autofill improvements that can replace some “workflow” extensions.

Use a supported companion app (when available)

Some extension-like products ship as dedicated Android apps with browser integration. If the extension you want has an Android companion, install it from Google Play and check for Edge integration settings inside Edge.

Switch to Chrome or a different browser temporarily

If your priority is a specific extension and Edge mobile isn’t cooperating yet, using Chrome temporarily may be the practical workaround. When you do, keep security expectations clear: mobile Chrome extension support and behavior can differ by device and rollout.

Bottom Line

Microsoft Edge adding an extension store for Android is a real quality-of-life upgrade: it brings browsing add-ons into the place you actually use them—on your phone. For most users, the winning move is straightforward: update Edge, open Settings > Extensions, install one extension at a time, and validate permissions.

If the store doesn’t show up, don’t guess endlessly. Update Edge, verify Android System WebView, clear cache, and confirm your sign-in state. Once it’s available, you’ll be able to manage extensions from inside Edge and iterate safely when something doesn’t work.
