Gboard for Android is rolling out a Dynamic Color theme update, bringing its keyboard styling closer to the look of your device theme. If you’re on a recent Android build and you use Material You (Dynamic color), this is the kind of change you’ll actually notice day-to-day: the keyboard blends better with your wallpaper and system accents.
Because rollouts are often staged and server-controlled, you may not see the update the moment it lands. This guide covers what’s new, how to confirm you’re on the right Gboard version, how to enable the theme, and what to do when it doesn’t appear.

You’ll have the best chance of seeing the Dynamic Color theme options if your setup meets Android’s requirements for Dynamic Color.

- Android device running a modern version with Dynamic Color support. Dynamic color is part of Material You; older Android versions won’t provide the same color signals.
- Material You / Dynamic color enabled on your phone. If your system theme isn’t using Dynamic Color, Gboard has nothing to mirror.
- Gboard updated. Theme support can depend on both the Gboard app version and server-side rollout flags.
If any one of those is missing, Gboard may fall back to older theme behavior or only show non-dynamic options.
How to check whether you have the update
Rollouts are commonly staged through the Google Play Store, sometimes with server-side activation layered on top. That means you should check both your Gboard version and whether the new theme option appears.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Gboard.
- Tap Update if it’s shown. If you only see Open, you’re on the latest version available to your account/device.
- After updating, open Gboard (either via the keyboard settings or by using the app entry in the Play Store).
- Check the theme options (next section). If Dynamic Color is available, it should show up under keyboard/theme settings.
If the update isn’t available yet, it can still be in the staged rollout window. Waiting a bit and re-checking Play Store usually works.
Enable Dynamic Color inside Gboard
The update only helps if Dynamic Color theme support is turned on in Gboard’s settings. The exact wording can vary slightly by Android skin, but the path is typically in the Gboard settings area.

- Tap Virtual keyboard > Gboard.
- Open Preferences or Theme (wording varies by Android version).

- Select the mode that uses Dynamic Color (or a similar label like Dynamic theme / system-based colors).
- Confirm and return to your keyboard to see the change.
If you don’t see a Dynamic Color option, the most common causes are an outdated Gboard version, server-side rollout not yet enabled, or Dynamic Color being disabled on the system theme.
Understand how Gboard picks colors (Material You + system theme)
Dynamic Color is driven by your wallpaper-derived palette, then applied across supported system surfaces. Gboard’s Dynamic Color theme follows the same underlying idea: it reads system color signals and uses them to tint UI elements.
This is why the keyboard colors can change when you:
- Switch wallpapers
- Change the system theme accent palette
- Toggle Dynamic Color settings on/off
If the keyboard doesn’t change after a wallpaper/theme update, force the theme refresh by reopening keyboard settings or restarting the app (and, in rare cases, rebooting the phone).

If you updated Gboard and still don’t see Dynamic Color theme options, work through these fixes in order. They cover the most common real-world failure points: missing permissions, cached resources, and system theme state.
1) Verify Android Dynamic Color is enabled
Open your phone’s theme settings and confirm Dynamic Color is turned on. If your system isn’t using Dynamic Color, Gboard can’t mirror it.
2) Confirm Gboard is actually updated
Open Play Store > Gboard and check you’re on the newest version available for your device. If you see no update button, you may still be waiting for the staged rollout.

3) Force refresh keyboard settings
- Open Gboard settings.
- Go to Theme.
- Change to a different theme option and then switch back to Dynamic Color.
- Test the keyboard in an app (Messages, WhatsApp, Notes, etc.).
This clears a surprising number of “theme stuck” situations caused by UI caching.
4) Clear Gboard cache (not data)
Clearing cache is usually enough to refresh theme resources without wiping your preferences.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Find and tap Gboard.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen the keyboard settings and check for Dynamic Color again.
5) Check for keyboard-related defaults that block theme rendering
If you use multiple keyboards (for example Samsung Keyboard plus Gboard), make sure Gboard is the active keyboard in the app you’re testing. Otherwise you’ll be looking at the wrong keyboard’s theme.
- In an app, tap the text field and open the keyboard.
- Ensure the keyboard label indicates Gboard (or use the keyboard switcher icon).
6) Reboot if nothing else works
For some devices, system theme palette updates don’t fully propagate until a reboot. If you changed wallpaper/theme just before checking, restart once and re-check Gboard.
Common mistakes that prevent the theme from applying
- Testing in the wrong keyboard. You can enable Dynamic Color in Gboard but still type with another keyboard in your target app.
- Dynamic Color disabled at the system level. Even with a correct Gboard version, the theme option may not appear if your phone isn’t using Dynamic Color.
- Assuming Play Store updates are instant. Staged rollouts are normal; “Open” doesn’t guarantee you have the server-side feature flag yet.
- Not re-checking after wallpaper changes. Dynamic Color is reactive—your palette changes when your wallpaper or theme palette changes.
- Expecting immediate changes after toggles. You may need to switch theme options or reopen the keyboard UI for the refresh to apply.
Alternatives if you can’t get Dynamic Color right now
If the option still doesn’t appear, you’re not out of luck. You can still make Gboard look consistent enough with a custom theme, or wait out the rollout.

In Gboard’s Theme settings, choose a fixed color scheme that matches your wallpaper palette. It won’t track Dynamic Color automatically, but it’s a quick aesthetic win.
Switch wallpapers temporarily to force palette signals
If your phone’s Dynamic Color palette feels stale, changing wallpapers can refresh system accents. After doing so, return to Gboard theme settings and re-check for Dynamic Color.

Update Gboard via Play Store again later
Because rollouts can be incremental, re-check Play Store after 24–72 hours. Some devices get the client update first, while others receive the feature flag later.

Do I need a specific Android version for Gboard Dynamic Color theme support?
You need an Android version with Material You / Dynamic Color support. If your system theme doesn’t use Dynamic Color, Gboard can’t mirror it.
