Microsoft Defender SmartScreen and Microsoft Defender Antivirus are different Windows protections, not two names for the same tool. SmartScreen uses reputation signals to warn about potentially risky websites, downloads, apps, and files. Microsoft Defender Antivirus scans and protects the device against malware. They complement each other; SmartScreen does not replace antivirus.
What Microsoft Defender SmartScreen does
SmartScreen checks reputation to help identify risky sites and downloads, including reported phishing or malicious sites and known unsafe programs. It can also warn when a downloaded app or file is not well known. These checks help you make a safer decision before visiting a site or opening a download; they are not the same as scanning the whole device for malware.

In Windows, the relevant controls are in Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection. Microsoft describes the apps-and-files toggle as one that turns on SmartScreen “to evaluate the reputation of apps and files you may download from the web.” In Microsoft Edge, SmartScreen settings are under Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is Windows’ built-in antivirus protection. Its real-time protection monitors files and programs as they are accessed or run, and it can scan for viruses and other malware, including ransomware. You can also start a quick, full, custom, or offline scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Security intelligence updates arrive through Windows Update. How the two protections differ

Windows Security is the app that brings these settings together; it is not another name for SmartScreen or antivirus. It also includes areas such as Firewall and Smart App Control. Microsoft Support: Stay protected with Windows Security.
Do you need both, and does SmartScreen replace antivirus?
They perform different jobs, so SmartScreen is not a substitute for antivirus. SmartScreen reputation warnings can help you avoid a risky site or download; antivirus helps detect and protect against malware on the device. A SmartScreen warning alone does not prove that antivirus is off or that the PC is infected.

If you install a compatible third-party antivirus, Microsoft says Microsoft Defender Antivirus automatically turns itself off. Its documentation does not say that this handoff disables SmartScreen; treat SmartScreen settings separately. Microsoft Support: Virus & threat protection in the Windows Security app.
What to do when you see a warning or suspect malware
For a suspicious website or download
- Read the SmartScreen warning and check that the site or download is genuinely from the source you intended to use.
- If you think Edge has flagged a site or download by mistake, use the report option provided with the warning. Microsoft lets users report sites as safe or unsafe and report downloads they believe were incorrectly flagged. Do not override an alert until you have verified the source. For a suspicious file or suspected infection
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Choose a suitable scan. A quick scan checks common locations; a full scan checks the device more broadly, while custom and offline scans serve other needs. Select the scan option appropriate to the concern.
A potentially unwanted app (PUA) is not necessarily malware. Microsoft says PUAs may show unwanted ads, use the PC for cryptomining, or bundle unexpected software; Windows reputation-based protections can help identify this category. SmartScreen is not Smart App Control
Smart App Control is a separate Windows feature, not another name for SmartScreen or Defender Antivirus. Microsoft says Smart App Control is unavailable in Windows 10 and can be enabled only on new Windows 11 installations, subject to its documented constraints. Microsoft Support: Smart App Control FAQ.

The paths above describe the built-in Windows Security experience for Windows 10 and Windows 11, but exact controls can vary by release and configuration. A work or school administrator may manage some settings, and your device may show different options. Follow the controls visible in your current Windows Security or Edge settings rather than assuming every device has identical switches.

Microsoft says real-time protection can be turned off temporarily, but files opened or downloaded while it is off are not scanned by that real-time feature.
