Copilot has the stronger documented Windows-specific integration; ChatGPT is a capable desktop assistant with a different set of documented tools. Copilot offers Windows shortcuts, screen context through Vision, local file search, and guidance to Settings. ChatGPT’s Windows app documents a companion window, uploads, and—in OpenAI’s newer desktop-app experience—separate Chat, Work, and Codex areas. Neither vendor’s cited documentation establishes that its assistant is objectively faster, more accurate, or better for every Windows user.
What is the difference between Copilot and ChatGPT on Windows?
For Windows-specific tasks, Microsoft documents more ways to invoke Copilot and give it device or screen context. OpenAI’s Windows-app documentation describes a companion chat window and uploads, while its newer desktop-app documentation describes broader Chat, Work, and Codex experiences. Those documents cover distinct app experiences, so they do not establish that every user sees the same features in one identical Windows app version.

“Copilot” also refers to more than one offering. The free assistant, Microsoft 365 Copilot for individuals, and business offerings can differ in features, access to work data, and account or license requirements. The distinction matters when comparing Office integration or organizational use.

Which assistant is easier to open while you work?
Copilot shortcuts and voice access
Microsoft documents opening Copilot with a Copilot key or the Windows+C shortcut, as well as optional “Hey Copilot” invocation. These give Copilot a Windows-oriented launch path; availability and behavior may depend on the device and current app configuration. Check your shortcut settings if the key or combination conflicts with another app. Microsoft Support’s Copilot on Windows guide describes these options.

ChatGPT’s companion window
OpenAI documents opening the ChatGPT Windows app’s companion window with Alt+Space while the app is open. The window supports chat and actions such as uploading files and generating images. The cited Windows-app guide lists Windows 10 version 17763.0 or later for x64 and arm64 systems. It also cautions that some features available on the web and macOS may not be available in that app version. See OpenAI’s Windows app guide for the documented requirements and behavior.
Can Copilot see what is on your screen?
Microsoft documents Copilot Vision as a way to ask about browser windows or apps open on screen and get help with them. A separate screenshot workflow lets users share screen content with Copilot. These are useful when the question depends on what is visible rather than on a description typed from memory. Screen context is still something to handle deliberately: share only material you are comfortable providing to the assistant.
The reviewed ChatGPT Windows-app guide documents chat and uploads, but does not establish an equivalent screen-viewing feature for that app. That is a limit of the cited Windows-app documentation, not proof that no ChatGPT version or account can offer screen-related capabilities. Microsoft’s feature description is in Getting started with Copilot on Windows.

Which assistant can search files on your PC?
Copilot file search
Microsoft says Copilot can find and open files and answer questions about the contents of supported file types. Its settings let users manage file access. Before relying on an answer about a document, confirm that the file type is supported and that Copilot has permission to access it. Details are in Microsoft’s file-search guidance.

ChatGPT file uploads
OpenAI’s Windows-app guide documents uploading files into a conversation. An upload is not the same as a documented search across local files: the cited guide does not establish that the Windows app can browse the PC and locate files on its own. For a question about one document, uploading it is a documented route; for locating a file by name or asking about local file contents without first selecting it, Microsoft documents the more direct Windows-specific capability.
Copilot PC insights are a separate, limited feature
Microsoft describes PC insights as an opt-in experimental feature rolling out gradually. It asks permission before accessing relevant device or file information, retrieves relevant information after approval, and lets users revoke permission. Microsoft also warns that its information may be incomplete or inaccurate. PC insights can provide information, but it does not change settings or fix problems automatically. See Microsoft’s PC insights guide.
Which one helps more with Windows settings and device questions?
Copilot is the more clearly documented choice for Windows-specific guidance: Microsoft says it can direct users to the relevant Settings page, and eligible users may also see PC insights as that experimental rollout expands. Treat the latter as informational assistance, not an automated troubleshooter or a tool that changes configuration.
ChatGPT can answer Windows questions in chat, but the reviewed OpenAI Windows-app documentation does not describe the same direct Settings guidance or device-information feature. That comparison is limited to the capabilities documented in the sources cited here.

Which is better for research, documents, and work?
ChatGPT desktop experiences
OpenAI’s newer desktop-app documentation describes Chat for conversation and search, Work for research, analysis, and creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites, and Codex for software development with local files and developer tools. The guide presents these as parts of a newer desktop experience; the separate Windows-app guide’s feature list should not be assumed to match every detail of that newer experience. See OpenAI’s guide to the new desktop app.
Microsoft 365 Copilot and work data
Microsoft 365 Copilot may add Microsoft 365 app and work-data capabilities, but those are not equivalent to the free Copilot assistant and are subject to subscription, license, and organizational configuration. For individual plans, some benefits may be limited to the subscription owner. For business use, an eligible license and administrator settings can determine access. Check the exact account and plan before treating Microsoft 365 integration as a feature available to every Copilot user. Microsoft outlines the distinctions at Microsoft 365 Copilot plans and Microsoft 365 Copilot for business.
Which should you choose?
| Your priority | Better documented fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Launch help from a Windows key or shortcut | Copilot | Microsoft documents a Copilot key or Windows+C and optional voice invocation; ChatGPT documents Alt+Space for its companion window while the app is open. |
| Ask about an open app or browser window | Copilot | Microsoft documents Vision and screenshot sharing. The cited ChatGPT Windows-app guide documents uploads but not equivalent screen viewing. |
| Find a local file or ask about supported file contents | Copilot | Microsoft documents local file search with settings to manage access. ChatGPT’s cited Windows-app guide documents user-selected uploads. |
| Get a route to a Windows Settings page | Copilot | Microsoft documents Windows Settings guidance; the reviewed ChatGPT app guide does not establish a matching integration. |
| Use a desktop workspace for research, analysis, or software development | Depends on the task | OpenAI’s newer desktop documentation distinguishes Work and Codex from Chat. Microsoft 365 Copilot may add work-data integration for eligible plans and configured accounts. |

The official product documents establish feature descriptions and requirements, not a head-to-head performance result. They do not show that either assistant is faster, more accurate, more reliable, or lighter on battery in comparable Windows conditions. The practical choice is therefore about fit: Copilot has the stronger documented Windows context and device access; ChatGPT offers a companion window and newer desktop workflows whose availability should be checked against the app experience and account you use.
