To connect a gaming controller to a Chromebook wirelessly, turn on Bluetooth, choose + Pair new device in Quick Settings, put the controller into pairing mode, then select it and follow the prompts. For a wired controller, connect it to a suitable port; whether a particular controller works depends on the model, Chromebook and game.
Connect a controller over Bluetooth
- Turn on Bluetooth: Open Quick Settings on your Chromebook and switch Bluetooth on. If Bluetooth is unavailable, check the Chromebook specifications or contact its manufacturer.
- Put the controller in pairing mode: Follow the controller maker’s instructions. Button combinations differ by controller; Google’s Chromebook Bluetooth instructions do not specify a universal controller shortcut.
- Pair it: In Quick Settings, select + Pair new device. Choose the controller when it appears, then follow any on-screen instructions.
- Check the connection: Look for the controller under Currently connected.

Connect a controller with a USB cable
Google lists gaming controllers among the peripherals Chromebooks can connect to, but its guidance does not identify specific USB controller models or guarantee that a particular controller-and-Chromebook combination will work. Connect the controller to a suitable Chromebook port. If the Chromebook does not detect it, check compatibility information from both manufacturers and confirm that the intended game accepts controller input.
Google recommends keeping ChromeOS up to date and notes that Works With Chromebook-certified peripherals are tested against Chromebook compatibility standards. Certification is a useful compatibility signal, not a guarantee that every game supports a controller. Bluetooth pairing didn’t work? Try these steps
Google’s general Bluetooth troubleshooting recommends the following actions. Try them in order, then repeat the pairing process:
- Check for and install available ChromeOS updates.
- Turn Bluetooth off, then back on.
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Hard reset the Chromebook if the issue continues. Follow Google’s instructions for resetting Chromebook hardware.

What to check before assuming the controller is supported
- Connection type: Bluetooth pairing depends on the Chromebook having Bluetooth; a wired connection depends on a suitable port and device compatibility.
- Controller model: General Chromebook support for gaming controllers does not establish support for every model. Check the controller maker’s compatibility guidance.
- Game support: A successful Chromebook connection does not ensure that a particular game accepts controller input. Check the game’s own support information.
