Choose ChatGPT if you want a general-purpose assistant for tasks such as writing, research, coding, file analysis, and image work, or prefer its individual and team plan options. The comparison depends on which Copilot experience and account you mean: Microsoft Copilot Chat is not the same as licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot.
First, identify which Copilot you mean
“Microsoft Copilot” refers to more than one experience. The key distinction is between Copilot Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft describes Copilot as an AI productivity tool that can integrate data with Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365 apps and services, but the data and features available depend on the product, license, and tenant configuration. Microsoft’s overview of Copilot explains the distinction.

Copilot Chat
Copilot Chat is primarily grounded in web data and has limited access to organizational content. A user may need to include or upload work material in a prompt to get help with it. Its available apps and exact experience vary by account and tenant configuration.

Microsoft 365 Copilot
With the relevant license and configuration, Microsoft 365 Copilot can reason across organizational data through Microsoft Graph and Work IQ, with access scoped to the user’s existing permissions. Microsoft describes the licensed experience as offering broader work-data grounding, semantic indexing, advanced agents, and priority access. Availability can vary, so those capabilities should not be assumed to appear identically in every tenant.

Microsoft says both Copilot Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot offer web-grounded chat, enterprise data protection, file uploads and analysis, and image generation in supported experiences. The licensed product’s practical distinction is its broader connection to Microsoft 365 work content, not simply that it is a chatbot. See Microsoft’s Copilot Chat comparison.
Where Microsoft 365 Copilot is the better fit
Microsoft 365 Copilot is the more natural option when the work you want help with already lives in Microsoft 365. If you regularly work in Word, Excel, Outlook, or Teams, the ability to ground assistance in organizational content can matter more than a general feature checklist—provided your organization has the right license and setup.
Rank #2
- Choose it for connected work context: You want help that can draw on relevant organizational content rather than relying mainly on web information or material you paste into a prompt.
- Check permissions and configuration: Work-data access is scoped by user permissions; the assistant does not give a user access to content they otherwise cannot access.
- Confirm the exact product: Copilot Chat and licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot differ in work-data grounding and capabilities. Ask your administrator which experience and license your account has before planning a workflow around premium features.
Where ChatGPT is the better fit
ChatGPT is a general assistant designed for tasks including writing, brainstorming, studying, planning, math, coding, file and image analysis, and web search. Its individual and team plans may suit someone who wants a standalone assistant rather than an experience anchored to a Microsoft 365 organization. OpenAI notes that plan features, model availability, and usage limits can vary and change; check its ChatGPT FAQ for current availability.
- Choose it for broad personal or mixed-purpose work: It supports a wide range of general assistant tasks, with available tools and model access depending on your plan.
- Choose a plan for your account type: Plus is an individual subscription; Business is a separate workspace plan with different terms and minimum seat requirements.
- Consider Temporary Chat when appropriate: OpenAI says Temporary Chats are excluded from history, do not create or use memory, and are not used to train models.
Plans and prices: compare like with like
The prices below are vendor-listed details in the cited pages, not a universal price comparison. They cover different account types and products; currency, eligibility, billing, and features matter.
| Option | Listed price and terms | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | The reviewed US enterprise pricing page lists $30 per user per month, paid yearly. A qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription is separately required. | Confirm the qualifying base subscription, contract, market, and tenant eligibility. The price is not a standalone consumer subscription quote. |
| Copilot Chat | Listed as included for eligible Microsoft Entra account users with an eligible subscription. | Check whether your account and subscription qualify and which Chat experience your tenant provides. |
| ChatGPT Plus | OpenAI lists $20 per month for Plus. | Individual plan. Model and usage limits can change; API use is billed separately. |
| ChatGPT Business Standard | OpenAI lists $25 per user per month on monthly billing or $20 per user per month on annual billing. | Requires at least two paid seats. Prices are in USD and may vary by country or currency. |
| ChatGPT Business Premium | OpenAI lists $125 per user per month on monthly billing or $100 per user per month on annual billing. | Requires at least two paid seats. Prices are in USD and may vary by country or currency. |
Microsoft’s cited enterprise price and ChatGPT Plus are not equivalent tiers: the Microsoft price is for a work-focused add-on and requires an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription, while Plus is an individual ChatGPT plan. For Business, OpenAI says workspace data is not used to train models. See the current Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing page, ChatGPT Plus pricing, and ChatGPT Business FAQ before purchasing. Features, prices, limits, and availability may change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy and work data depend on the account
For Microsoft 365 Copilot, the relevant claim is that organizational data access is permission-scoped and depends on the license and configuration. That is different from saying every Copilot account can access company content.
Rank #4
For ChatGPT, the relevant claim in the cited material is specific to Business: OpenAI says Business workspace data is not used to train models. Do not assume that statement describes every individual plan or account type. Temporary Chat has separate controls around history, memory, and training. Compare the actual account terms and settings you will use, rather than treating either product’s privacy protections as identical across plans.
A practical way to decide
- List the work you want help with. If it depends on information in your organization’s Microsoft 365 environment, assess Microsoft 365 Copilot. If it is mostly standalone writing, research, study, coding, or file analysis, assess ChatGPT.
- Verify your account and license. Establish whether you have Copilot Chat or licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot, and whether your Microsoft 365 subscription qualifies. For ChatGPT, distinguish an individual plan from a Business workspace.
- Check the specific features and limits you need. Confirm current access to models, file and image tools, web search, agents, and usage allowances for your plan and region. Feature availability and limits change.
- Compare the full cost. Include any required Microsoft 365 base subscription, billing cadence, number of users, and currency. Do not compare a Microsoft work add-on directly with an individual ChatGPT subscription without accounting for those differences.
- Review data handling for the account you will use. Check organizational permissions and administration for Microsoft work content, or the exact ChatGPT plan’s data terms and controls.
Is one assistant better overall?
No universal winner is established by the available vendor documentation. Microsoft’s strongest case is work-data grounding and integration for appropriately licensed Microsoft 365 environments. ChatGPT’s strongest case is its general-assistant scope and individual or team plan choices. Neither product should be declared faster, more accurate, or more productive overall without a controlled, comparable test for the tasks and accounts in question.
