The PS4 and Xbox One versions are the older releases, not the new editions. Choose Switch 2 if handheld play is the priority; early reviews suggest PS5 has the sharper image in the demanding 0.2 episode, though one reviewer also noted a bloom issue. These are pre-launch reports, not a controlled, complete comparison of every platform.
What is included in HD 2.8?
The collection combines three different kinds of content that lead into KINGDOM HEARTS III: Dream Drop Distance HD, a playable game; 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –, a shorter playable episode starring Aqua; and χ Back Cover, a movie about the Foretellers. Square Enix describes the package as three experiences leading up to KINGDOM HEARTS III.

That distinction matters when weighing performance reports: the early cross-platform observations focus particularly on 0.2, not every part of the collection.
How do the versions compare?
| Version | What to know | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 | New edition listed for October 8, 2026. Offers handheld play. Early reviews report strong results for Dream Drop Distance HD but variable performance in 0.2. | Players who want to play natively on a Nintendo handheld or move between handheld and docked play. |
| PS5 | New edition listed for October 8, 2026. An early reviewer observed higher resolution and draw distance than on Switch 2 in 0.2, as well as a bloom issue. | Players prioritizing the early-reported image quality in 0.2. |
| Xbox Series X|S | New edition listed for October 8, 2026. The Xbox store lists 4K Ultra HD, 60 fps+, cloud saves and Xbox Play Anywhere as capabilities; these are not a measured guarantee for every scene or console. | Players already invested in Xbox, especially those who value the listed Xbox ecosystem features. |
| PS4 / Xbox One | Previous console editions. Square Enix lists their original releases as January 12, 2017 for PS4 and February 18, 2020 for Xbox One. | Players who already own and are satisfied with a prior edition; eligible digital owners should check the discount for the new edition. |
| Original Switch cloud version | Cloud-streamed edition released February 10, 2022; Nintendo says an internet connection is required. It is distinct from the new Switch 2 release. | Players for whom the existing cloud edition works acceptably and who do not need a native Switch 2 version. |
Release and prior-platform details are listed on Square Enix’s Japanese product page. The Switch 2 date and cloud-owner offer appear on Nintendo UK’s listing; new platform and purchase details are on Square Enix’s collection page.

What do early Switch 2 and PS5 performance reports say?
Switch 2
Nintendo Life reports that Dream Drop Distance HD runs at 1080p in handheld mode and 4K docked, at 60 fps in both modes. Those are the reviewer’s findings, not a publisher benchmark. For 0.2, the same review reports an unstable 30 fps and says a capped 30 or 40 fps option would have helped. Read Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 review.
PS5 versus Switch 2 in 0.2
RPG Site’s early comparison describes Switch 2 as having an uncapped, variable frame rate and improved draw distance over PS4 Pro, with other visual areas appearing close. The reviewer observed higher resolution and draw distance on PS5, but also reported a bloom issue on that version. The comparison was incomplete at the time, including its Xbox Series assessment, so it does not establish a final platform winner. See RPG Site’s early comparison.
The two Switch 2 reports describe frame rate differently, reinforcing that these are reviewer observations rather than a settled technical specification. They are specific to this game, particularly 0.2; they should not be generalized to every title in the broader KINGDOM HEARTS series.
Does the old Switch cloud version make sense?
The original Switch release is a cloud version, not the same native edition as the Switch 2 release. Nintendo’s US product listing says an internet connection is required. If you already own it, whether to keep playing it depends on how well cloud streaming works for your connection and whether you want the new release’s handheld-native option. Check Nintendo’s cloud-version listing.

Square Enix says digital owners of the previous 2.8 release on Switch cloud, PS4 or Xbox One qualify for 50% off digital pre-orders and post-launch purchases of the new editions. Nintendo UK separately says existing cloud-version owners are eligible for a 50% discount on Switch 2. Check the offer and displayed price in your own regional store account before buying; the Nintendo UK listing does not establish identical eligibility or pricing in every region.

Which version should you play?
- Choose Switch 2 if portable play is the deciding factor and you want a native Switch 2 release rather than the older cloud-streamed Switch edition.
- Consider PS5 if early reports of higher resolution and draw distance in 0.2 matter most to you, while keeping the reported bloom issue in mind.
- Choose Xbox Series X|S if you prefer the Xbox ecosystem or the store-listed features. The available early comparison does not support a performance verdict against Switch 2 or PS5.
- Keep your prior version or compare the owner offer if you already own the PS4, Xbox One or Switch cloud release; the 50% digital discount may change the value of upgrading, but it is not a reason to rebuy if you do not want the new edition.
