Yes—Bing can use generative AI to produce summarized answers, but this is not a brand-new 2026 feature. Microsoft introduced its AI-powered Bing in February 2023. The current consumer experience is generally presented as Copilot Search in Bing or Bing’s generative-search experience. It adds conversational summaries and citations while conventional Bing links and search verticals remain available.
Use the summary for orientation, comparisons, and follow-up questions; open the cited pages before relying on it for medical, legal, financial, safety, political, breaking-news, or otherwise consequential decisions.

What is Bing’s AI answer feature called now?
Microsoft’s naming can be confusing because several related products use the Copilot brand.

“Bing Chat” and “the new Bing” are older launch-era descriptions. They are useful historical references, but they do not describe one permanent interface or one universal AI model today.

A short timeline
- February 7, 2023: Microsoft announced an AI-powered Bing and Edge experience in its launch announcement.
- 2023 onward: Generative AI capabilities expanded across search, chat, content creation and image generation.
- By 2026: Microsoft presented the consumer search experience under Copilot Search and generative-search branding, with summaries and citations integrated into Bing.
- February 2026: Bing Webmaster Tools introduced its AI Performance report in public preview, giving publishers visibility into citations in Microsoft AI answers.
How to use Copilot Search in Bing
The exact buttons can vary by country, language, browser, device, account and product experiment. The normal path is:
- Open Bing.com.
- Enter a question in natural language, such as “How does heat-pump efficiency change in cold weather?”
- Look for an AI-generated summary, or select the Copilot or Copilot Search option when it appears.
- Read the answer, then open an individual citation or choose See all links, Sources or a similarly labelled control.
- Ask a follow-up question or select a suggested prompt if the interface offers one.
Microsoft’s Copilot Search tutorial shows controls for expanding the response, opening media results, viewing sources and continuing the conversation. If those controls are absent, use the ordinary result links or try Bing on another supported device or account.
Does every Bing search receive an AI answer?
No. Microsoft says some enhanced answers may be powered by generative AI. Bing still uses conventional ranking, structured answers, knowledge panels, business information, shopping results, maps, images and other systems. Whether an AI answer appears depends on the query and the user’s context.

That means Bing has not replaced its results page with a chatbot, and an AI answer is not guaranteed for every question. The interface and availability can also change during regional rollouts and testing. Microsoft describes the result types and safeguards in How Bing delivers search results.
How Bing generates an answer
Microsoft describes the process as grounding: connecting a generative response to information retrieved from the web rather than relying only on a model’s pretraining. At a high level:
- Bing interprets the query and retrieves potentially relevant information.
- Generative AI synthesizes that material into a response suited to the question.
- The response may include citations and links to the underlying pages.
- Microsoft applies classifiers, content filters, metaprompting and other safeguards.
Microsoft’s explanation of grounding is available in the Bing Search Blog. Public documentation does not establish one permanent model, a fixed retrieval recipe or a simple rule such as “read the top 10 results and write a paragraph.” Model selection, ranking and orchestration can vary.

Are Bing’s AI answers accurate?
Citations make an answer easier to inspect, not automatically correct. A response can still misunderstand the question, combine incompatible claims, rely on a weak page, omit an important exception or attach a citation that supports only part of a sentence. Search grounding can improve freshness without making every claim real-time or error-free.
Check the evidence when the stakes are high
- Open the cited page instead of trusting the snippet.
- Check its publication or update date and jurisdiction.
- Prefer official records, primary research, regulators, manufacturers and original documentation.
- Compare independent sources when facts are disputed.
- Do not rely on the summary alone for diagnosis or treatment, legal rights, compliance, taxes, immigration, investments, emergencies, safety instructions, elections, breaking news or product recalls.
Recover from a suspicious answer
- Open every relevant citation and identify which claim it actually supports.
- Rewrite the query with a date, location, jurisdiction, product version or other missing constraint.
- Ask Bing to separate confirmed facts from inference.
- Search directly for the primary document, official changelog or regulator notice.
- Compare the AI response with ordinary Bing results and multiple authoritative sources.

The hybrid approach is often best: use Copilot Search to map the subject, then use ordinary links and primary sources to verify the details.
What Bing’s AI answers mean for websites
A page can be cited in an AI answer without receiving a conventional click. Conversely, ranking in ordinary Bing results does not guarantee inclusion in a generated response. This creates a distinction between search visibility, citation visibility and referral traffic; Microsoft’s cited-page data does not by itself establish a universal traffic increase or decrease.

Measure citations in Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing’s AI Performance report, introduced in public preview in February 2026, reports cited pages, citation counts, trends, average cited pages and grounding queries across supported Microsoft AI surfaces, including Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries and selected partner integrations. What publishers should not promise
Microsoft does not publish a guaranteed formula involving FAQ schema, an llms.txt file, a particular word count or any other single “GEO” tactic. Make pages crawlable, accurate, clearly structured and useful, then measure actual citations rather than promising inclusion.

Is Bing AI free?
Ordinary Bing AI answers and the free consumer Copilot experience do not require Copilot Pro or a Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft says free Copilot can provide real-time answers based on web search.

Copilot Pro is an optional subscription for people who want benefits such as preferred access to advanced models, higher usage and Copilot features in Microsoft 365 applications. The Microsoft Store page displayed $20 per user per month when retrieved; verify the current price and benefits before buying, because Microsoft can change them. Paying for Copilot Pro is not necessary merely to ask questions in Bing.
Microsoft 365 Personal, Family or Premium can make sense when you also want Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and cloud services. Benefits differ by plan, and Microsoft notes that some AI benefits are restricted to the subscription owner even on Family or Premium plans. See Microsoft 365 for current plan details.
How Bing compares with other AI search tools

These products overlap, but their indexes, interfaces, model choices, citations and account requirements can differ. There is no reason to pay for one simply to obtain the basic AI answer capability already available through Bing.
Bottom line
Bing has evolved into a hybrid search-and-answer product. Copilot Search can summarize web information, cite the pages it used and support follow-up exploration, while conventional links and search verticals remain essential. Treat the generated response as a research aid: useful for orientation and synthesis, but never a substitute for checking authoritative source material.
