Microsoft says Android users will need to enable Microsoft Authenticator backups through Google One starting in January 2027, instead of using a personal Microsoft account. The change is specific to Android: Microsoft’s current iPhone instructions still use iCloud, and the notice does not say iOS backups are changing.
What changes in January 2027?
Microsoft’s Android backup instructions state: “Starting January 2027, you will no longer use your Microsoft personal account to enable backup.” The instructions say Android users will instead enable “Microsoft Authenticator” from Google One backup. Microsoft has not given a specific day for the change. Microsoft’s backup instructions are the source of the announcement.

| Android | Currently, turn on Cloud Backup in Authenticator settings and select a personal Microsoft account. Starting January 2027, Microsoft says to enable Microsoft Authenticator from Google One backup. | Microsoft gives January 2027, but no specific day or detailed rollout procedure. |
| iOS | Enable iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup; confirm Authenticator is switched on in the iCloud saved-app list. | This is Microsoft’s currently documented iPhone procedure. Its January 2027 notice appears in the Android instructions, not as an announced iOS change. |
Google’s general Android backup guidance says device backups go to a Google Account and that some data is protected by the device screen lock. It also describes up to 15 GB of no-charge storage for a Google Account, with more storage available through Google One. That general information does not explain Authenticator’s specific integration or show that a paid plan is needed. Google’s Android backup guidance is not a substitute for Microsoft’s Authenticator-specific instructions.

What an Authenticator backup restores
A backup does not make every account ready to use immediately after a phone change. Microsoft distinguishes between restored one-time-password codes and accounts that require signing in again:
- Third-party accounts using one-time passwords: their codes are restored.
- Microsoft personal accounts using only one-time passwords: their codes are restored.
- Microsoft personal accounts using passwordless sign-in: only the account name is backed up; sign in again after restoring.
- Work or school accounts: only the account name is restored; sign in again.
Microsoft’s restore guidance says a recovery may require choosing “Restore from backup” or “Begin recovery” and signing in to the recovery account. Some accounts need additional sign-in or verification. Backups also cannot move between operating-system types: an iOS backup cannot be restored to Android, and backup and restore must use the same device type. See Microsoft’s restore instructions for the current recovery flow.

What to do before replacing or resetting a phone
- Inventory the accounts in Authenticator. Note which entries are one-time-password codes, passwordless Microsoft personal accounts, or work or school accounts. This helps identify which accounts may need a fresh sign-in after recovery.
- Check the current instructions for your phone’s operating system. Android and iPhone backups use different paths, and an iOS backup cannot be restored to Android.
- Confirm another way to sign in or recover each important account. Have the relevant password, recovery method, or organization sign-in process available before changing devices; restored account names may still require reauthentication.
- Keep a working authenticator method until the replacement is ready. Microsoft warns that removing an account prevents that device from verifying sign-ins for it. On Android, clearing Authenticator app data removes all accounts and cannot be undone. Do not remove your only working method or clear app data before you can sign in and enroll the replacement.
Microsoft documents the consequences of removing accounts and clearing data in its Authenticator sign-out guidance.

- Microsoft’s notice gives a month, not an exact launch date.
- The final Authenticator-specific Google One enrollment and recovery steps are not described by Google’s general Android backup page.
- The available guidance does not establish whether paid Google One storage is required for Authenticator backup.
Until Microsoft publishes more detailed instructions, Android users should rely on its current support guidance and avoid assuming the future flow is already available. iPhone users should continue to follow Microsoft’s iCloud instructions unless its iOS guidance changes.
